THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDRVG THE CITY OF BELMONT Celebrating its 75th Anniversary WHEREAS, on this month of October, two thousand and one, BELMONT celebrates 75 years of dedicated service to its residents, San Mate0 County, the San Francisco Bay Area and peoplefiom all over the world; and WHEREAS, BELMONT served as the first San Mate0 County seat in 1856 and was incorporated as a municipality in the month of October, 1926; and WHEREAS, BELMONT was known in the in the 1800’s for its idyllic, rural setting, home to businessmen such as William Chapman Ralston, and as the population grew in the 1900’s, subdivisions developed into the quiet and much desired suburban community which today boasts institutions such as Notre Dame de Namur University; and WUEREAS, BELMONT’s 50th Anniversa y Committee celebrated by painting fire hydrants to resemble famous historical figures, established a sister city relationship with Belmont, Massachusetts, honored lifetime residents Bert Johnson and Anita Kelly and the parents of the first boy and girl born in the City that year, put up three mission bells on El Camino Real and bought the Reader Board on Ralston Avenue; and WHEREAS, BELMONT% 75thAnniversa y Committee has scheduled and sponsored a number of gala events in various locations throughout the City including a Parade, Talent Show, 7.5K Walk/Run, Historic Homes and Ralston Hall tours, Polic&ire softball game, Ralston Hall dance and Old Fashioned Picnic; and WHERAS, BELMONT is known for its active civic participation and because of its small town atmosphere, it truly representative of the American spirit that we value and cherish, NOW, THEREFORE, BE ITRESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mate0 County extend their congratulations to BELMONT and its residents upon its 75th Anniversa y and best wishes for continued prosperity. S.J. Air Board's Plan to Reduce Greenhouse Gases Rejected
S.J. air board's plan to reduce greenhouse gases rejected Climate strategy may be considered again in August By Alex Breitler - Record Staff Writer Stockton Record, Friday, June 20, 2008 FRESNO - San Joaquin Valley air cops' first stab at reducing greenhouse gases - including a possible carbon "bank" for businesses - was rejected Thursday, even though board members voted 7-1 in favor. The only opposition came from Fresno cardiologist John Telles, the newest board member, appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a recent restructuring of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District board. Telles' "no" vote was all that was needed to defeat the plan, since three board members were absent, and four positions on the 15-member board are vacant. Eight "yes" votes were needed for a majority. CUTTING CARBON The climate plan would consider: • Establishing a carbon "bank." Businesses could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and earn credits, which could be sold to other businesses. • Developing guidelines for cities and counties that increasingly must consider climate change when studying the environmental impact of a range of projects. • Starting a voluntary program in which businesses that emit greenhouse gases pay the district. The money would be used for grants for emissions reductions elsewhere. Some board members were frustrated with the outcome. "Are you saying we're just going to sit back and do nothing?" said Ronn Dominici, a Madera County supervisor. "I totally disagree." Telles said he was glad the district was looking into reducing greenhouse gases. But, he said, the state plan to reduce those gases to 1990 levels by 2020 doesn't authorize local agencies to come up with their own plans.

The charter of what is now Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, was signed in 1868 and the 150th anniversary was celebrated throughout 2018. On the East Coast, the Sisters founded Trinity University in Washington, D.C. in 1897 and Emmanuel College in Boston in 1919, making a total of 370 years of collegiate education in the United States. Origin of street names: Burlingame and Hillsborough- (sources noted where available, compiled by Jennifer Pfaff, Mary Packard, Martha May-August 2012, revised August. 2018, June 2020) NOTE: There are NO “streets” in Burlingame! (Main Street was the only exception, and it is long gone.) -August 4, 1922, pg. 1 Burlingame Advance reported: There are 40 miles of paved streets in Burlingame ADELINE DRIVE: (Burlingame) named in honor of Adeline Mills, who married Ansel I. Easton. She was the mother of Ansel Mills Easton, and they were responsible for subdividing the Easton Estate, creating the town of Easton which later became North Burlingame. (Peninsula Life Magazine, pg. 30. July 1946) ALPINE AVENUE: (Burlingame) According to a 1985 account by Dick Thompson, 536 Marin Drive, the street was named for John W. and Fred W. Alpen (yes, with an “e”), who lived at 833 Alpine Avenue for many decades (the home is still there in 2012). Previous to 1928, Alpine Road was named 1st Avenue. ALVARADO AVENUE: (Burlingame) Presumably named after Juan B. Alvarado, an early Mexican Governor of California from 1836-42ß. He led and won a revolution against the preceding Mexican governor in 1836, and took part in another uprising eight years later against Gov. Micheltorena. Alvarado was a central figure in California history in the twenty years before the U. S. occupation. Together with Castro and Pico he led the 1 Mexican opposition to the American occupation.
