Block 0 MIGRANT FIGURES FROM «LIQUID REALITY» TO «MELTED REALITY» IN THE FANTASTIC GENRE Block 0: Migrant figures from «Liquid Reality» to «Melted Reality» in the fantastic genre 9 Block 0: Migrant figures from «Liquid Reality» to «Melted Reality» in the fantastic genre MIGRANT FIGURES FROM «LIQUID REALITY» TO «MELTED REALITY» IN THE FANTASTIC GENRE Mario-Paul Martínez Fabre and Fran Mateu A new reality of «migrant figures» If you type the word «reality» in your Internet browser, you will come across a peculiar group of images: screens full of encrypted data, characters connected to virtual reality peripherals, scenes from reality shows and, even well-known life simulation video games, like The Sims (Maxis, Electronic Arts, 2000). A torrent of images where the pattern, contrary to what is expected, is not marked by the idea of «reality», but the discourse of the simulated, of the inconsistent. This exercise was already carried out in a moment of inspiration by the designer of our book cover, Vicente Javier Pérez, and its melted result is a wink to all this visual imagery that, rather than posing the constitution of our environment, it dilutes it in a continuous «meme» of futuristic topics: 80% of the time, we will see the protagonist of these images absorbed by a source of data and luminescent projections; the rest of the percentage is made up of the aforementioned images, and some that would surprise the reader himself (and which we will leave to his curiosity) due to their strange association with the concept of «real». 10 Block 0: Migrant figures from «Liquid Reality» to «Melted Reality» in the fantastic genre It seems that it is difficult for us to separate this idea of​​«reality» from a kind of technological science-fiction that articulates it, shapes it, or in the last case, misrepresents it, from the media and the digital systems that comprise it. Moreover, in times in which this same technology is defined by a logic of speed (Virilio, 1998), enormous in its power of dissolution and obsolescence over objects. In this «jumble» of representations and copies, by force majeure, the ideals of a consumer society are mixed —delighted with these accelerated circuits of purchase and sale— and other strata of our own culture and mythology. The video game, comics, literature, or cinema, among many other arts, have become hosts of this «unreality» that also affects the diversity of their creative facets. And it is questionable to what extent we are aware of the true nature of the elements that are currently influencing them. How independent are the signs and signifiers of art when faced with the imperatives (and the simulations) of this digital society? The philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman (2000) brought together a good part of these ideas under such a suggestive concept as «Liquid Modernity»; a term that alludes to a society that has lost its values of union and stability, in the face of a state of continuous change. Uncertainty, ambivalence, nomadism, etc. are the characteristic features of the «modern liquid human being», and it is in his gaze where a different perception of the everyday emerges, in which the solid is now as inconsistent as the liquid. As a reflection of this volatile world, as well as the different artistic expressions that echo it, we have also come across (and quite often) a fantastic genre equally fascinated by its transience. Consider, for example, of a classic film as visited as Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982), which presents us with a «melted reality», deformed, with the vision of a future world —November 2019— technified, dehumanized, and dominated by power relations between privileged citizens and the lower classes1. Without a doubt, it is a «post-liquid reality», where the fantastic narrative speculates about a future world through the present. 1 Which wander en masse through the narrow, dirty alleys of a Moebius-inspired city, dotted with skyscrapers, overcrowding, gas explosions, neon-wrapped billboards, constant rain, air traffic and where it is always night (Candela, 2003, pp. 38-39). 11 Block 0: Migrant figures from «Liquid Reality» to «Melted Reality» in the fantastic genre As expected, we also find artistic representations with glimpses of this new reality in previous decades. For example, the union of French symbolist theories and German idealist romanticism, in addition to the latent social concerns in the Central European culture of the interwar period, gave rise to cinematographic expressionism: Kammerspielfilm, New Objectivity, and its multitude of combinations with the strange, the deformed. A reality that, as a result of the state of mind of a historical epoch, led to a «melted society» before the world of the occult, the morbid and the nocturnal (Armada Manrique, 2003, p. 365)2. In this mode of representation, «the melted» becomes a «migrant element» through the aesthetic. For this reason, the «migrant» envelops those narrative or aesthetic figures that travel through time, finding themselves provided with new gazes, rearticulating their modes of representation and their artistic interconnections. Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema.

Vaughan and artist Tony comics Harris’ Ex Machina (August 2004–August 2010); writer Brian Wood and artist Ground Zero Riccardo Burchielli’s DMZ (November 2005–February 2012); and writer Garth 9/11 Ennis and artist Darick Robertson’s The Boys (October 2006–November 2012). archifictions Taking literary critic Laura Frost’s concept of ‘archifictions’ as its starting point, the War on Terror article discusses how these series frame the September 11 attacks on New York and architecture their aftermath, but its primary concern is with their engagement with the larger social ramifications of 9/11 and with the War on Terror, and with how this engage- ment is rooted in and centred on Ground Zero. It argues that this rooting allows these comics’ creators to critique post-9/11 US culture and foreign policy, but that it also, ultimately, serves to disarm the critique that each series voices in favour of closure through recourse to recuperative architecture. The attacks on September 11 continue to be felt in US culture. Comics are no exception. Comics publishers, large and small, responded immediately and comics about the attacks or the War on Terror have been coming out ever since. Largely missing from these comics, however, is an engagement with Ground Zero; after depicting the Twin Towers struck or falling, artists and writers rarely give the area a second thought.

    Chapter Six: New Terrors, Emerging Trends and the Future of Japanese Horror Repetition, Innovation, and ‘J-Horror’ Anthologies The following pages constitute not only this book’s final chapter, but its conclusion as well. I adopt this structural and rhetorical manoeuvre for two reasons. Firstly, the arguments advanced in this chapter provide a critical assessment of the state of the horror genre in Japanese cinema at the time of this writing. As a result, this chapter examines not only the rise of a self-reflexive tendency within recent works of Japanese horror film, but also explores how visual and narratological redundancy may compromise the effectiveness of future creations, transforming motifs into clichés and, quite possibly, reducing the tradition’s potential as an avenue for cultural critique and aesthetic intervention. As one might suspect, the promise of quick economic gain – motivated both by the genre’s popularity in Western markets, as well as by the cinematic tradition’s contribution to what James Udden calls a ‘pan-[east-]Asian’ film style (2005: para 5) – inform the fevered perpetuation of predictable shinrei mono eiga (‘ghost films’). Secondly, by examining the emergence of several visually inventive and intellectually sophisticated films by some of Japanese horror cinema’s most accomplished practitioners, this chapter proposes that the creative fires spawned by the explosion of Japanese horror in the 1990s are far from extinguished. As close readings 172 Nightmare Japan of works like Ochiai Masayuki’s Infection (Kansen, 2004), Tsuruta Norio’s Premonition (Yogen, 2004), Shimizu Takashi’s Marebito (2004), and Tsukamoto Shinya’s Vital (2004) variably reveal, the future of Japanese horror cinema may be very bright indeed.

    Screams on Screens: Paradigms of Horror Barry Keith Grant Brock University [email protected] Abstract This paper offers a broad historical overview of the ideology and cultural roots of horror films. The genre of horror has been an important part of film history from the beginning and has never fallen from public popularity. It has also been a staple category of multiple national cinemas, and benefits from a most extensive network of extra-cinematic institutions. Horror movies aim to rudely move us out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties. The ideology of horror has shifted historically according to contemporaneous cultural anxieties, including the fear of repressed animal desires, sexual difference, nuclear warfare and mass annihilation, lurking madness and violence hiding underneath the quotidian, and bodily decay. But whatever the particular fears exploited by particular horror films, they provide viewers with vicarious but controlled thrills, and thus offer a release, a catharsis, of our collective and individual fears. Introduction Insofar as both film and videogames are visual forms that unfold in time, there is no question that the latter take their primary inspiration from the former. In what follows, I will focus on horror films rather than games, with the aim of introducing video game scholars and gamers to the rich history of the genre in the cinema. I will touch on several issues central to horror and, I hope, will suggest some connections to videogames as well as hints for further reflection on some of their points of convergence.
