Journey of Lotus Flower 1 JOURNEY OF LOTUS FLOWER UDON THANI NAKHON PATHOM PHATTHALUNG Lotus flower represented something unearthly and enlightening for Eastern cultures which is why the flower is often seen alongside divine figures. Lotus flowers can be seen in all over the regions of Thailand, for instance in the central part of Thailand at Nakhon Pathom; in the Northeastern part of Thailand at Udon Thani and in the southern part of Thailand at Phatthalung. 2 LOTUS FLOWER call “BUA” in Thai The lotus or (Bua in Thai) is crucial in the daily life of the Thai people and is the traditional flower of Buddhism. It represents the path of life as it emerges from the mud (samsara), grows clean and pure through the water (purification), and produces a beautiful flower (enlightenment). Legend has it that when the Lord Buddha took his first steps, lotus blooms opened up to cushion the soles of his feet. With its roots in the mud, the plant rises above the dirty water to yield a flower of perfect beauty and purity. Indeed, for Buddhists, the flower stands for pureness of spirit and the flowers are widely used as offerings at shrines, in spirit houses and in the temple. 3 The aquatic flower, so central to Buddhist tradition, is also at the heart of many wonderful dishes. Besides having a spiritual meaning, the lotus has many other uses. The roots, petals and stamens of some varieties are used by herbalists to treat a variety of complaints from fainting attacks to acne, and from the lowering of blood cholesterol to stomach upsets. In fact, most of the lotus plant is edible. Some people will eat the raw seeds, others might boil up the dried seeds in syrup as a popular drink; moreover, the roots can be mixed with pork to make a delicious soup, and the leaves and stems of some species can be used in salads. The leaves are also used to wrap steamed rice, giving it a mild lotus fragrance; when fresh, the lotus leaves are useful as (biodegradable) wrappers. 4 Lotus flower in Thai symbolizes spirituality Lotus flower in Thai symbolizes spirituality Thai people and many other Southeast Asian countries namely Cambodia offer lotus flowers to Buddha statues because they believe that by offering nice things to Buddha they will accumulate merit and thus attract good fortune into their life. Some people also fold lotus petals in order to add to the beauty of the already beautiful flowers. Moreover, many believe that they will eventually attain enlightenment, just like how the lotus rises and blooms above the water. 5 Red Lotus Floating Market Na Bang Lane ,Nakhon Pathom Red Lotus Floating Market Na Bang Len It is the new recreation and shopping center for tourists on weekend. The palace is about a kilometer away from the majestic pagoda, Phra Pathom Chedi. The location was formerly called “Noen Prasart”, and believed to be the site of an ancient palace. Close to Noen Prasart, before a Brahman shrine, was located a natural pool called "Sa Nam Chand" (presently Sa Bua). Before ascending the throne, the then Crown Prince Vajiravudh (later H. M. King Rama VI 1910 - 1925) came to this city to pay homage to the big pagoda. He wished to build a palace here as a retreat and a residence during his pilgrimage trip to the pagoda. He preferred this area for he viewed it as a strategic location. In 1907, he bought about 335 acres of land around Noen Prasart from local people. He then had Luang Phitak Manop (Noi Silapi, later Phraya Visukam Prasit) design and supervise the construction of the palace. The construction began in 1902 by the end of the Fifth Reign (1868 – 1910). It was completed in 1911. H.M. King Rama VI named it Sanam Chandra Palace. In addition, the king had another plan for this palace. It was to serve not only as a retreat, but also as a stronghold during a national crisis.

© Lonely Planet Publications 101 BANGKOK BANGKOK Bangkok In recent years, Bangkok has broken away from its old image as a messy third-world capital to be voted by numerous metro-watchers as a top-tier global city. The sprawl and tropical humidity are still the city’s signature ambassadors, but so are gleaming shopping centres and an infectious energy of commerce and restrained mayhem. The veneer is an ultramodern backdrop of skyscraper canyons containing an untamed universe of diversions and excesses. The city is justly famous for debauchery, boasting at least four major red-light districts, as well as a club scene that has been revived post-coup. Meanwhile the urban populous is as cosmopolitan as any Western capital – guided by fashion, music and text messaging. But beside the 21st-century façade is a traditional village as devout and sacred as any remote corner of the country. This is the seat of Thai Buddhism and the monarchy, with the attendant splendid temples. Even the modern shopping centres adhere to the old folk ways with attached spirit shrines that receive daily devotions. Bangkok will cater to every indulgence, from all-night binges to shopping sprees, but it can also transport you into the old-fashioned world of Siam. Rise with daybreak to watch the monks on their alms route, hop aboard a long-tail boat into the canals that once fused the city, or forage for your meals from the numerous and lauded food stalls.
