The combined efforts of professionals in Rajagiri outREACH help the community and environment to strive every day. This was evident when Kerala was confronted with the Flood in August 2018, one of the drastic catastrophes in the history of the State. Our integrated efforts to rehabilitate the affected people and their eco-systems have been well appreciated by the government and community and we as a team are determined to do good every day.

Irrigation Department Government of Kerala PERFORMANCE PROGRESSION POLICIES Irrigation Design and Research Board November 2020 PREFACE Water is a prime natural resource, a basic human need without which life cannot sustain. With the advancement of economic development and the rapid growth of population, water, once regarded as abundant in Kerala is becoming more and more a scarce economic commodity. Kerala has 44 rivers out of which none are classified as major rivers. Only four are classified as medium rivers. All these rivers are rain-fed (unlike the rivers in North India that originate in the glaciers) clearly indicating that the State is entirely dependent on monsoon. Fortunately, Kerala receives two monsoons – one from the South West and other from the North East distributed between June and December. Two-thirds of the rainfall occurs during South West monsoon from June to September. Though the State is blessed with numerous lakes, ponds and brackish waters, the water scenario remains paradoxical with Kerala being a water –stressed State with poor water availability per capita. The recent landslides and devastating floods faced by Kerala emphasize the need to rebuild the state infrastructure ensuring climate resilience and better living standards. The path to be followed to achieve this goal might need change in institutional mechanisms in various sectors as well as updation in technology. Irrigation Design and Research Board with its functional areas as Design, Dam Safety, Hydrology, Investigation etc., plays a prominent role in the management of Water Resources in the State. The development of reliable and efficient Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System integrated with Reservoir Operations, access to real time hydro-meteorological and reservoir data and its processing, etc.

VISTAS Vol. 7, No. 1, 2018, pp. 12-15 ISSN: 2319-5770, e-ISSN 2394-1138 A STUDY ON THE BIODIVERSITY OF GASTROPODE & BIVALVE MOLLUSCS IN MUNAKKAL & SNEHATHEERAM BEACHES OF THRISSUR DISTRICT Anis K.V.* *Department of Zoology, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Irinjalakuda, Thrissur 680121, Kerala, India. ABSTRACT Diversity of Gastropod & Bivalve molluscs in Munakkal & Snehatheeram beaches was assessed. The samples were collected for a period of 3 months and species diversity was analyzed. Bivalves belonging to four different orders were identified. They are veneroida, Mytiloida, Ostreoida, & Pectinoida. Identified Gastropods were included in the Orders Neogastropoda, Littorinimorpha & Caenogastropoda. Key words: Bivalves, Gastropods, Veneroida, Mytiloida, Ostreoida, Pectinoida, Neogastropoda, Littorinimorpha,Caenogastropoda INTRODUCTION Molluscs, Commonly called the ‘shelled fishes’ are among the best known of all invertebrate animals. Mollusca is the second largest animal phylum, next to Arthropoda. They are highly adaptive and they have successfully colonized both aquatic & terrestrial environments. Bivalvia is group of bilaterally symmetrical and laterally compressed molluscs, with paired right and left mantle lobes and a bivalve calcareous shell. Bivalvia is the second largest group of phylum Mollusca, comprising an estimated 15,000 odd species. Bivalves are especially adapted for exploiting the benthic habitat, where they are safe from predators. A perfect understanding of the bivalve diversity of the coastal system is an essential prerequisite for implementation of sustainable utilization of bivalve resources and for adopting suitable conservation measures the gastropods (snails and slugs) are by far the most numerous molluscs in terms of classified species, and account for 80% of the total. The class Gastropoda has an extraordinary diversification of habitats.

The essence of pure ayurveda enhanced by generations of trust. After the fall of the Mahodayapuram Cheras in 12th century, Malabar Coast was fragmented into numerous feudal city states called Nads (swaroopams), ruled by Naduvazhis. Moopil Nair is the term used to denote Nair Naduvazhis (rulers of nads or city states) and Desavazhis (rulers of desams) of tiny feudal kingdoms on the Malabar Coast, present day Kerala State, South India. These Nads were again divided in to desams ruled by the Desavazhis. Perumbayil Tharavadu was the desavazhis of Paluvai Desam. Some of its family members were ayurveda practitioners also. Today Perumbayil Mana, is renovated and re constructed as one of the authentic ayurveda treatment centres following the traditional way. It is the only place in Kerala, the Astavaidya and Guru Parambara lineage co- exit. We follow “Ayurvedamana Way” a unique combination of Ayurveda, Kalari (martial art) and Marma (pressure point) treatment system.
