Preface to the first edition

This is a work-in-progress to collect and edit song sheets for the beginning ukulele player. Titles in bold italics refer to song sheets with chords placed above the lyrics. Titles in green are Christmas.

Please check the version on the cover page as this songbook will be updated with corrections and improvements. Intended for online use, this PDF has hyperlinking functionalities, from the entries in the table of contents to individual song sheets within. By clicking on the bottom right corner of each page, you return to the table of contents cover page.

Outstanding: 1. Rank song sheets by levels of difficulty or group them in three categories. 2. Correct any mistakes in lyrics, chord names, and chord placement. 3. Add counts (for time signature) and introduction to lead into the song. 4. Suggest optimal endings so a group can end together.

Acknowledgments

We are grateful to the pioneers of ukulele song sheets who have generously made their work available online, easily found and some with functionality to edit, transpose, etc. Alphabetically, they are as follows:

● Sue Rogers of Bytown Ukulele Club at http://www.bytownukulele.ca/ ● Doctor Uke’s https://www.doctoruke.com/ ● Jim Carey’s https://ozbcoz.com/ ● Richard Gibson’s https://scorpexuke.com/ ● Gillian Altieri of San Jose Ukulele Club at http://sanjoseukeclub.org/

Who Are We?

The Chocoleles or Choco-leles is the ukulele group founded and formed in January 2018. We meet each week to learn songs by studying song sheets at the Walter Baker Artist Lofts, also known as the Walter Baker Building, at 1231 Adams Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02124.

This compilation pdf was projected to the wall for our first public group play along and sing along session at the Lower Mills Branch of the Boston Public Library on Thursday 10th January 2019 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The next ones in this library will be 14th February and March 2019.

Let [C] me tell you of a story 'bout a [F] man named Charlie On [C] a tragic and fateful [G7] day. He [C] put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his [F] wife and family, Went to [C] ride on the [G7] M - T- [C] A.

[C] But will he ever return? No he'll [F] never return, And his [C] fate is still un- [G7] learned. He may [C] ride forever 'neath the [F] streets of Boston, He's the [C] man who [G] never re [C] turned.

[C] Charlie handed in his dime at the [F] Scully Square Station, And he [C] changed for Jamaica [G7] Plain. When he [C] got there the conductor told him, [F] "One more nickel!" Charlie [C] couldn't get [G7] off of that [C] train. CHORUS

[C] Now all night long Charlie [F] rides through the stations, Crying, [C] "What will become of [G7] me? How [C] can I afford to see my [F] sister in Chelsea, Or my [C] brother in [G7] Rox- [C] bury?" CHORUS

[C] Charlie's wife goes down to the [F] Scully Square Station, Every [C] day at a quarter past [G] two. And [C] through the open window she hands [F] Charlie his sandwich As the [C] train goes [G] rumbling [C] through. CHORUS

[C] Now you citizens of Boston, don't you [F] think it's a scandal, How the [C] people have to pay and [G] pay? Fight the [C] fare increase, vote for [F] George O'Brien, Get poor [C] Charlie off the [G7] M T [C] A! CHORUS x 2

All Things Ukulele http://www.anneku.com/ukulele Common People artist:Pulp , writer:Pulp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuTMWgOduFM [C] She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge She studied sculpture at St. Martin's college, that's where [G] I caught her eye [C] She told me that her dad was loaded I said, "in that case I'll have a rum and coca cola," she said [G] fine [G] And then in thirty seconds time, she said:

[F] I wanna live like common people, I wanna do whatever common people [C] do I wanna sleep with common people, I wanna sleep with common people, like [G] you Well what else could I do? I said "I'll see what I can [C] do."

[C] I took her to a supermarket I don't know why, but I had to start it some[G] where, so it started there. [C] I said, "pretend you've got no money." She just laughed and said "oh, you're so funny I said [G] "Yeah, well I can't see anyone else smiling in here." Are you sure?

[F] You wanna live like common people. You wanna see whatever common people [C] see? [C] You wanna sleep with common people. You wanna sleep with common people like [G] me? But she didn't understand, she just smiled and held my [C] hand!

[C] Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job Smoke some [G] fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school But still you'll [C] never get it right, 'cos when you're laid in bed at night Watching [G] roaches climb the wall, if you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah

[F] You'll never live like common people You'll never do whatever common people [C] do Never fail like common people, you'll never watch your life slide out of [G] view And then dance and drink and screw, because there's nothing else to [C] do!

[C] [G] [C] [G]

[F] Sing along with the common people, sing along and it might just get you [C] through Laugh along with the common people, laugh along even though they're laughing at [G] yo And the stupid things that you do, because you think that poor is [C] cool [C] I wanna live with common people like you (x6 sing higher each time) Oh la la la oh la la la la la Oh la la la oh la la la la la [G] [C]. Intro :Bass Run then Solo Uke 1, 2, 3, 4

C I hear the train a commin, its rollin round the bend C7 I aint seen the sunshine since I don’t know when F C I’m stuck in Folsom prison and time keeps draggin on G7 ------Tacet------C But that train keeps a rollin, on down to San Antone

C When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son, C7 Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns. F C But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die G7 ------Tacet------C When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry..

C I bet there's rich folks eating in a fancy dining car C7 They're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars. F C Well I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free G7 ------Tacet------C But those people keep a movin' and that's what tortures me...

C Well if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine C7 I bet I'd move it on a little further down the line F C Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay G7 C And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away..... Good Night Irene - C Leadbelly

As I was walking that ribbon of highway, I saw above me that endless skyway,

I saw be-low me that golden val….. ley, this land was made for you and me.

This land is your land, this land is my land, from Cali-fornia to the New York island,
