Sports Development and 10 Club Links Active Life 10 Partnership Students Success: P a g e 2 Year 8 Football Kent Cup Run! This year records tumbled as our year 8 football team reached dizzy heights in the Kent Cup. The boys enjoyed a successful competition which saw them reach the semi-finals, making them one of the 4 best football teams for their age group in Kent! Their run even included knocking out last years runners up, Sir Roger Manwoods (a grammar school in Sandwich) with a comfortable 8-4 victory away from home in one of the best performances we’ve seen from a school football team. Up until the semi-final the boys were in prolific goal scoring form, netting 28 goals in 4 games against King Ethelberts, Charles Dickens, Brockhill and Roger Manwoods and only conceding 8 (4 of which were in the quarter final). This was down to the whole team effort during each game, that saw players peak and dip at different times. However, there was always a player who stepped up whenever someone was having an off day to ensure the team got the result they needed. Across all positions in the team there were notable performances and exceptional moments that in some cases either kept them in or won them the game. The most notable being in the semi-final when the boys went 1-0 and Manwoods were in charge until Joe Mears, who was back from serving a ban for poor behaviour in school, scored two top quality goals from right wing to turn the game around and ensure that we then were in charge and in a comfortable position for the rest of the match. Unfortunately, this form could not continue as they came up against a considerably bigger and stronger Bonus Pastor school from Bromley who never let our boys settle in the game and came out deserving winners on the day. This was however, a new HBHS record and we look forward to seeing how far the boys can go next year. An amazing effort and the whole team should be extremely proud of how far they reached and how well they played as a team to get there. The team was: Leo Dodds, Jake McCarthy, Joe Mears, Devon Mason,, Lee Mannering, Toby Wilson, James Williams, Jake Addy, Alfie Whent, Brandon Munday, Riley Soto-Tuite, Charlie Holmes, Ethan Cusden, Zeus McCully, George Crook and James Reynolds.

Year 10 Sports Studies Exam Results Our first ever cohort of year 10 Sports Studies students sat their contemporary issues in sport exam on Friday 11th January. Staff had been working extremely hard getting to grips with the content, style of question and offering revision sessions to provide the students with the best possible opportunity of achieving well. The students were also very busy studying hard and attending revision sessions. When the results came back we were very pleased with what had been achieved as they enabled the majority of the students to achieve their target grade set by the school. Harry Harnett did particularly well being the only student to achieve the equivalent of a L2D* (the highest possible grade) with a very impressive 55 out of 60.

Herne Bay High School PE & Sport Newsletter I s s u e 2 5 P a g e 3 Ski Trip to Pila, Italy Review

This year the school was delighted to once again be able to take 45 students from years 8, 9 and 10 to attend a ski trip to Pila, Italy. The lucky students who were successfully drawn to attend the trip travelled to Italy on Saturday 2nd March and returned 8 days later on Sunday 10th March, after enjoying what was a very successful trip. During their time in Italy, the students enjoyed 6 fantastic days skiing in some very varied weather conditions. It had been a month since the last snowfall however, the pistes were still in good condition with over 40cm of snow. This was made better following a heavy snow downpour on the Tuesday during our second day skiing. This made the conditions massively contrasting to the first day where all the runs were smooth and beautifully pisted. Instead it was heavy on the legs, slower and much harder to see. Luckily this snow continued, but stopped before Wednesday mornings skiing began, meaning we were greeted with lots of fresh snow around, blue skies and beautiful skiing conditions. This continued to be the theme for the next couple of days as well. A typical ski day for the students was a busy one, perhaps busier than they expected and more tiring than they let on. At the start of the week, the students were up at night chatting away claiming they weren’t tired, despite them being sent to bed and told to settle down. This soon changed though as the week went on, as the noise vanished earlier and earlier… Each day began at 7am with a lovely wakeup call down the corridor with ready and raring to go replies of “What time is it!?”. Breakfast followed at 7.30am with a buffet of continental food and cereal up for grabs. At 8.15am students would get into their groups and set off for the day. The journey to ski hire was a lovely 40 minute drive down the winding valley, with amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Here the students put on their ski boots, collected their skis and poles and then carried them to the gondola station. After a short ride up to the resort, taking in some more views and discussing the day ahead, we arrived at the top ready for skiing lessons to start at 10am. The students then went off with their ski instructors for a day of skiing, pausing for lunch, which was usually a larger than required serving of pasta or pizza! During the week of skiing the students progressed through different parts of the mountain, getting higher up and on steeper slopes as their skills improved. All the groups did exceptionally well to get to the top of the ‘M25’ blue run by the end of the week, which is the longest run at the resort running from the top to the bottom. They all started the week in a V snow plough shape and most managed to finish with the makings of parallel skis. The advanced groups even managed to get on the snow park and practice their jumps and off piste skiing! It wasn’t all smooth sailing though as there were a few bumps and bruises from various falls for both students and staff during the week. If you ask Toby about his you will probably hear some dramatic story about him flying over the edge and clinging on the edge of a mountain and being pulled back up by three people and some ski poles, don’t worry Toby we wont tell anyone you fell over a bump on the edge of the piste and couldn’t get up… At the end of skiing each day, students made their way to return their skis, sharing highlights and funny crash stories with their group leaders. After travelling back to the hotel, students had time to freshen up and relax before dinner and the apres ski activities. Dinner was at 7pm and consisted of 3 courses of the largest portions anyone could ask for. Starting with your body weight in pasta, followed by a meat and veg course and finishing off with a freshly baked dessert, there was definitely no one going hungry! Finally, came the apres ski. Jak was adamant he was going to beat his lowest score we’ve ever seen bowling (14,) and started off with 2 strikes!!! We won’t mention what scores followed though…Other apres activities included mountains of ice cream, unique ornaments in shops, hurling each other down the snow in a rubber ring, endless supplies of pizza and finally a lovely, positive end to the week with an awards evening for the students. We were very fortunate that throughout the week we had the most amazing staff helping us. From the HBHS staff who came, to Steven and Kevin our coach drivers, Georgie our Interski rep, all of the ski instructors and Roberto the hotelier, everyone was absolutely amazing with our students. They engaged them in games, discussions and jokes, creating much laughter and heaps of positive memories. Combine that with how well our students behaved throughout the trip, proving a real credit to their parents and to the school, it’s no wonder that plans for the next trip are already in motion. If you are interested in seeing more about this year’s ski trip, including pictures and daily blog articles from the students, or want to find more information on next year’s trip please visit out website at www.hernebayhigh.org/ information/residentials #Pila2020! Cheerleading Workshops We have been very lucky towards the end of this term as our girls have been receiving some high quality cheerleading training from expert coaches. The girls have been taught about timings, different sequences and have started to practice their rolls and tumbles. This will continue after half term on Monday after school and we hope to enter a competition in due course.

WIFF WAFF for World Reading Week The PE department and some sixth form students helped set up and run the LRC’s reading week annual WIFF WAFF tournament (Table Tennis with books instead of bats). Harry Newton, Piran Butler, Willaim and Shem Lejarde made it to the semi-finals with Piran and Shem in the final. A dominant display by Shem saw him retain his title and lift the trophy. Overall a very successful competition that saw over 100 students visit the LRC. Special thanks goes to Mia Godden, Molly Godden, Lacey Compton, Amy Tritton and Libby Fielder in year 12 for giving up their lunch breaks to help run the event.

This Girl Can! Following the research found from the girl’s active research, this girl can extra-curricular club has continued to grow. To encourage girls to take part in physical activity students have been encouraged to take part in various sports which they may not have considered or known about previously. This is to ensure they have a wide range of sporting knowledge as well as the opportunity to try physical activities they may not have known about previously these have included: Dodgeball, Korfball, Tug of War, Boxing, Fitness lessons, Double Dutch Skipping, Floorball and Benchball. Girls from various year groups have attended every week who thoroughly enjoy trying something new each week, with some students electing to try out sports they particularly would like to attempt. If any students wish to take part in this extra-curricular club they can attend on Thursdays from 3:30pm-4:30pm where everyone meets outside the sports hall or see Miss Capon in the PE office for further details.

BTEC National 6th Form Cyclopark Visit Once again this year we offered ten level 3 BTEC Sport students the opportunity to visit the Cyclopark in as part of their sports operational management unit. The students got to interview a member of staff about the facility and how it is run before getting to have a go on the BMX track. The students had a great time with one having an unfortunate fall that was caught on camera (to be shown at our Sports Awards evening in September), luckily Ben McManus was okay and took the fall well.

Herne Bay High School PE & Sport Newsletter Experiences and Opportunities continued: P a g e 5 Big Splash! Trip Well done to the following Y7 students who took part in the East Kent Schools Together ‘Big Splash’. The students involved were Leighton Wickenden, Jay Holdsworth, Jessica Bartlett, Ria Callan, Natasha Crudgington, Cerys Hodder, Joshua Lawrence, Harry Small, Lilia Young, Emma Newington-Growns and Blake Franks. They all participated in first aid, life saving, communication and teamwork activities and represented the school brilliantly! Well done to Leighton Wickenden who also got the communication award!

Japanese Student Teacher Visit On the 26th of February, Herne Bay High School welcomed 10 trainee PE teachers from Japan who are on a visit to England with Chaucer college. These trainees spent a day with the PE department where they observed, and occasionally joined in, various PE lessons throughout the day. They were also able to experience the culture of education in England and compared it to their own experiences in Japan. They were kind enough to share this knowledge with us by giving a workshop to some of our year 7s which focused on different elements of the Japanese culture through the use of calligraphy, origami, Japanese language and tradition Japanese games. All pupils enjoyed learning these Japanese skills and expressed that they would like to experience something like this again in the future.

Outdoor Education News: Duke of Edinburgh Award The last couple of terms has been the preparation and build up to the practice expeditions both for the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh award. Bronze participants have taken part in many different training events including: navigation, planning, compass bearings, camp crafts, first aid and the countryside code. Throughout this preparation the 43 Bronze participants have been brilliant with all willing to learn and the excitement building further with all students becoming more independent each session. On the 6th & 7th April bronze participants will be walking their practice expedition in the surrounding areas of Deal with the physical and mental challenges that the expedition will provide. Silver level participants will be taking on their next expedition challenge in May. All students are thoroughly looking forward to this opportunity and challenge and we can’t wait to see them all succeed over these weekends. I s s u e 2 5 P a g e 6 Volunteering and Leadership at HBHS: 6th Form BTEC Students Event: On Wednesday 27th March our year 13 BTEC Sport students ran an event for local primary schools as part of their level 3 qualification. As part of their assignment they had to complete all of the necessary planning, organisation and running of the event all by themselves, with little to no teacher input. This meant that they had to contact and liaise with the primary schools, plan and organise the equipment and facilities and be responsible for setting up, running and officiating the event themselves. The students decided to run a multisport event consisting of 5 a-side football, end-ball and indoor athletics races. All in all the event went well and the feedback from the primary school students and teachers is all very positive, with most asking to come again! Well done to our students for doing such a good job, we hope the skills you have learnt and used will be useful within your futures.

Morning Mentor Sports Each morning our Mentor Sports leaders have continued to come down before the start of the school day to set up and run the Mentor Sports programme for the whole school. They have been working tirelessly in numerous capacities including officials, coaches, first aiders, scorers and sometimes even players to make up numbers to cover for missing students from assemblies etc. The Mentor Sports competition has been very competitive over the last two terms, with each college competing in Volleyball (Term 3) and dodgeball (Term 4). The results for each college are shown below: Following the finals during the last week of competition we are delighted to announce the winners were as follows: Delta: Year 7/8 winners: DJG & DSR Year 9/10 winners: DCS Sigma: Year 7/8 winners: SGR & STK Year 9/10 winners: SKI & SED Omega: Year 7/8 winners: OBR & OKB Year 9/10 winners: OCP Theta: Year 7/8 winners: TWS & TRY Year 9/10 winners: TCE & TRO Epsilon: Year 7/8 winners: EJR Year 9/10 winners: EGY & ELJ I s s u e 2 5 P a g e 7 Sports Partnership: SGO Competitions & Training After a very busy term for the School Sports Partnership the Easter holidays have seemed to spring upon us out of nowhere! We have run a number of sporting activities and events at the High School and as always, have had some exceptional students from the school who have volunteered their time to assist at our events. The first event that took place was literally as soon as we arrived back to school after the Christmas break and saw the local Secondary schools participate in Yr 7&8 Sportshall Athletics in our arena and Sportshall. Pupils from Herne Bay High School competed against Simon Langton, Queen Elizabeth’s, The Abbey School, Barton Court, The Whitstable School, Canterbury Academy, and St Anselm’s to represent the partnership at the Kent School Games Finals. It was a fantastic event with a huge amount of talent displayed and our Yr 7 Girls, Yr 7 Boys and Yr 8 Boys proving their athletic ability by making it through to the finals and representing us at Park. The Yr 5&6 Sportshall Athletics, Yr 5&6 Handball, KS1 and KS2 Speed Stacking and KS1 Infant Agility all took place at Herne Bay High School during the Spring term with maximum entries for all events and seeing well over 150 primary school pupils attending and enjoying each of these events. We had over 45 different Yr 7 and 8 pupils volunteer and be trained to assist at these events and the feedback was superb. Teachers attending on the day were particularly impressed with not only the clear explanations and demonstrations but also the support they gave the children during the events. They really are a credit to our school and I am extremely grateful for the help and support they provide and cannot thank them enough. They even want to stay for longer to present the medals and tidy the equipment away!! Taking advantage of the great facilities we have at Herne Bay High School and the support of the PE Department and Active Life, we have also hosted the Primary PE Co-ordinator meeting at the High School which saw the PE lead in 24 local primary schools attend and compete in a few games of cornerball!! We have also delivered a skating session for 60 primary school pupils, a climbing club and bouldering sessions for some of our local schools. We have also got a qualified coach to deliver a cheerleading club for the Herne Bay High School pupils who wish to attend so I’m looking forward to seeing the final results in the upcoming weeks!! All in all, a busy and eventful term that I hope will be just as fun and successful when we return after a much deserved break for our students.

Kent School Games Excellence Award

On Sunday 3rd March 2019 Herne Bay High School picked up a Kent School Games Excellence Award at the Gulbenkian Theatre. The award is to recognise outstanding commitment to the Kent School Games across a number of years. Only 15 schools (secondary and primary) across Kent received the award. It is testament to the commitment and hard work of the PE and SGO teams organising; events, competitions, sports leaders, teams and putting on practice sessions for the students. We would also like to thank the sports leaders that have done an amazing job supporting a variety of events and competitions.

Herne Bay High School PE & Sport Newsletter I s s u e 2 5 P a g e 8 Fixtures and Results: Boys Football Year 7: Please see front page for District Cup Champions article. Year 8: Following their success in the Kent Cup (see page 2 for write up) the year 8 boys football team were in high hopes for this years District Cup. In the first round they drew CCW away, which after rain was postponed a week. When the game was played the boys put in a solid, but rusty in places, performance to overcome CCW 11-1 with a romping 7 goals from Devon Mason and a brace from Zeus McCully. Next they faced Abbey, who have proven to be tricky in the past, at home. A more refined performance from the whole team lead to a very professional looking 6-1 win over the difficult opponent. Devon Mason once again in the limelight with a hattrick, which was again matched by Zeus McCully. This performance was a lot more fluent in attack, exposing Abbey in the wide areas and creating many opportunities. Abbey came out at the start of the second half 2-0 down and played with more confidence and authority to take a bit of the a hold on the game and eventually score. At 2-1 Abbey looked dangerous until our boys re-found their rhythm and scored 3 goals in 5 minutes to put the game to bed, before one more late goal settled it. This set up a challenging semi-final draw against Simon Langton, who the boys have beaten and lost to equally this year. Going into the game the boys were confident and optimistic of a place in the final. This showed in their first half performance, dominating much of the play thanks to a strong performance by returning captain Leo Dodds, following an injury that saw him out of the two previous games, and the other more senior players in the squad (Jake McCarthy, Charlie Holmes and Jake Addy). The scores were level at 2-2 at half time and our boys once again came out fighting, creating many very good chances in the second half. Unfortunately, following 2 spectacular saves from the Langton keeper and a missed penalty the game was even at 3-3 at full time and went to extra time. In extra time Langton had more left in the tank and were more clinical with their chances and eventually went on to win the game. It was a high quality game, with some amazing football from both teams, although HBH were in control of the game, Langton took control in extra time and came out worthy winners and we wish them luck in the final. Next year that trophy is ours! Year 9: The year 9 boys were given a bye for the first round of the district cup and then played Abbey in the second. The team didn’t have the ideal build up when two students pulled out on the day, one due to illness and the other due to injury. Unsurprisingly the team quickly found themselves behind and struggled to get their foot in the game with several players playing out of position. At half time the score was 4-1 to Abbey and after a couple of positional changes the boys grew in confidence and although the game finished 4-1 the team had the better of the second half. All the players did themselves proud and never let their heads drop. Year 10: Please see front page for District Cup Champions article. Girls Football Girls football unfortunately has taken a slight dip in fixtures due to a large number of schools cancelling fixtures this side of Christmas, this unfortunately proved very frustrating for our school! However, excellent commitment was shown by a group of students each week at training. Football has stopped for the summer but I am very much looking forward to starting this up again next year. Girls Netball Year 7: The year 7s have been amazing this season, participation has been high, we have had lots of fixtures to fulfil and winning near enough all of these. The girls come to training with determination, competitiveness and they are always fighting for their spot in the team which (in a good way) makes my job difficult. In each fixture they have taken part in, they have represented themselves and the school highly and it has been great to see their team work and playing ability improve immensely throughout the season. We head to the District tournament on 2nd April and we hope to continue the success we have had in the league fixtures. Well done to every single girl who has trained and played as you have made it a very enjoyable season. Year 8: The year 8 netball team have worked hard with their training sessions with the build up to the tournament happening at the end of the term. Numbers to training have been consistently high with the levels of skill shown improving each week. Having played the tournament, we finished 4th out of 10. This was an excellent way to finish the season and look forward to the hard work starting again next year. Well done to Skye Jemmett, Ruby Walker, Molly Barrett, Elsie Roberts, Kira Cook, Maisie Jeffries, Brooke Bibok, Isobel Tozer, Bella Turner, Lily Harris, Megan Boaler , Paris House, Lily- Rose Bryant, Ellie-Mai Whittham, Elly Read and Olivia Poultan for their on going commitment to girls netball. Year 9: The year 9 Netball team have been extremely dedicated and enthusiastic throughout this term. The team has continued to grow alongside the team work and the enjoyment for playing netball this term, leading up to their tournament. Although they did not place within the top 3 teams they worked extremely hard and held their ground against tough opponents doing themselves and Herne Bay High School proud. It was extremely difficult to identify a star player from the team as they all played amazingly but Lottie Ralfs, new to the team, adapted and played as a brilliant GK ensuring the defence was strong. Alongside Lottie, Cei Cammidge played fantastically intercepting many passes and making some brilliant decisions throughout all games. Well done to the whole team. Year 10: The year 10 girls have attended training well this term and despite taking some time to get into the momentum they did play some hard fought matches such as that against . The girls were successful against Abbey School and showed great sportsmanship and teamwork. Well done to Izzy Cope for showing great leadership and to Madi Atkinson who showed lots of improvement and both earned the district Colours Award. Well done to the following; Izzy Cope, Florence Beacon, Grace Rossiter, Mia Reeves (who unfortunately could not play but was our team supporter!), Rosie Knight, Emily Bushell, Amelia Thomas and Madi Atkinson. Thank you also to year 9 girls Izzy Lewis-Taggart and Shannon Young for helping our team out and coming to play! Boys Basketball Year 8: The year 8s repeated their triumphs of last year, winning the District Tournament undefeated once again! The boys had a big squad which proved invaluable as they all got plenty of rest and could therefore play at an higher intensity in each of their games. First they played St Anselms and despite a slow start clinched a win in the dying seconds of the match. Next up were CCW who attacked well and put a lot of pressure on the boys, fortunately though Devon Mason was also quick on the attack and scored 3 quick lay-ups to ease the pressure. Next up was the biggest test, Barton Court. This was a close game, where the lead kept alternating between teams. Both teams were defending well and limiting the chances for quick or easy baskets, which made pulling away with a lead difficult. As with the first game though, a clutch lay-up in the last few seconds of the game saw a win for our boys and an assured place in the final. Before the final the boys played and beat Abbey to ensure that their road to the final was undefeated. The final saw a repeat of the Barton Court game, this time not requiring any last ditch baskets to win it. The boys rallied together and played some solid basketball to move the ball around with pace and hit on the counter and eventually come out as undefeated District champions for the second year in a row. Well done boys, top achievement! Year 9: The year boys team only had a couple of friendlies against Abbey this season and after losing the first game before Christmas they exerted revenge by beating them 25-12 in January. The first couple of quarters were close but Herne Bays quality came through during the third before they dominated the fourth. The whole team played well with notable performances from Brandon Eynon and Robbie Steele with Robbie getting MVP. The team are looking forward to being part of the league system in year 10 when they will get more matches. Year 10: From the success of only losing one game in the District league competition the boys went into the district cup full of confidence. The main thing that the boys were challenged to do in the District cup was to start well and apply pressure through scoring an early basket. This would settle the team down and give them a foundation to build on. The boys seemed to do this in every game and won all their games in the round robin tournament. This meant that they now have won all four District cups since Year 7. I am hugely proud of the boys effort, commitment and hard work. This meant that we entered the Year 10 team into the Under 15 Kent School Games Basketball tournament. This was the teams opportunity to play against a much stronger set of teams and see how they would match up. The structure of the tournament was that there was four groups and the top two teams would go into the finals and the bottom two teams would go into the plate competition. We narrowly lost the first game we played and this was a wake up call that the pupils had to have a good start, similar to the District cup competition. The team won the next two games convincingly and went through

Herne Bay High School PE & Sport Newsletter I s s u e 2 5 Fixtures and Results Continued: P a g e 9 to the finals of the competition. The team came up against a strong team in the quarter finals but lost the game closely which sent them through to the fifth to eighth place play-offs. In this fixture we came up against the eventual winners and this was a very close fought game with both teams creating chances and opportunities to score baskets. In the final set of games we beat the teams to finish fifth out of sixteen teams which is a very good result and the boys conducted themselves very well and did our school proud. I have been really pleased with how the boys have performed over the four years that they’ve played basketball. Girls Basketball Year 7&8: An excellent season for the girls basketball saw the best numbers to training we have ever had! Having over 30 year 7+8’s made the season a fun and exciting few months. The games during the season were very positive having won 4 out of the 5 fixtures we played against other schools in the district setting us up nicely for the tournament ahead. Entering the tournament was a challenge for us as we chose to go with only year 7 + 8 players which meant the group were playing against year 9’s also which I am pleased to say the girls finished a respectable 4th out of 9! An excellent effort by all. Well done girls and lets continue to winning ways next year. Year 9&10: Year 9 and 10 girls basketball training has continued to be popular leading up to their two major tournaments at the end of the term. Well done to the year 9&10 girls basketball team for competing at Medway Park for the Kent School Games. Although the girls did not win they worked extremely hard and showed huge progressions in their tactical and skill ability against some tough opponents. Grace Rossiter was a star at keeping herself composed under pressure alongside Isobel Lewis-Taggart whose speed and drive helped to set up some amazing attacking plays. Well done everyone you did brilliant! Kent School Games Events: Sports Hall Athletics Year 7 Girls: Our lovely year 7 sports hall athletics team headed off to the KSG finals in January. They were very excited about this as this is the first big event most of them have attended since being at HBHS. The girls represented themselves and the school well whilst at Medway Park. Every single one of them competed well in each of the their events and supported each other well. They thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and we hope to qualify for the finals next year. Year 8 Boys: The year 8 boys continued with their successful indoor athletics record from last year to once again reach the KSG finals, held at Medway Park. The boys competed well across the board, winning a selection of heats in different track and field events including the 2 lap race, speed bounce and the standing long jump. They gave maximum effort throughout and should be proud to know they came 10th in the whole of Kent! Top effort and we hope the success continues during the outdoor season after Easter. The team was: Leo Dodds, Jake McCarthy, Devon Mason, Joe Mears, Edden Dodds, Sam Stevenson, Toby Wilson and George Crook. Handball U13 Girls: The U13 girls handball team qualified for the Kent School Games handball having beat the teams convincingly in the qualifying rounds. Travelling up to Medway Park was exciting for the girls as we knew we would be playing the best schools in the county. It was a great challenge for the girls which they tried their hardest to compete with the best schools around. A great opportunity for the girls which will can build on from for next year. U15 Boys: From the success of the qualifiers where the boys only conceded one goal and won all their games easily to qualify for the Kent School finals. The boys in the first game were very slow to start and drew the game. In the final two group games the boys started to get back into the swing of things and began to dominate and dictate play in their group games. This meant that they stood out as favourites for the competition from the way they played and employed tactics in their games. The boys went on to beat two further districts in the quarter and semi-finals which meant they went into the final to face the team they originally faced in the first game of the tournament. Both teams were very cagey to begin with because of the experience of playing each other at the beginning of the tournament. We were much more clinical and Joe Chipperfield our goal keeper was very confident and commanded his goal area. We took the lead during the game and then started to relax and be patient which is key in Handball to create the best opportunities to score. The boys went onto win the final 3-0. Winning the competition means that they now go onto represent Kent in the South East Regional finals. The boys were full of confidence and should be hugely proud of their effort, engagement and attitude throughout the competition. We wish them good luck going into their South East regional finals. Trampolining Well done to all of our students who competed in the Kent School Games trampolining competition which was held at Jumpers Rebound Centre in Gillingham back in March. All represented the school brilliantly and achieved well! A huge congratulations to Y10 Joe Chipperfield who came second in the Intermediate category and Y12 Mollie Walker for coming third in the Advanced category, excellent achievements indeed! Congratulations also to the Y7 Intermediate girls who came third in the team event; Paige Whiting, Macie Sutcliffe and Hannah Murrell and especially to Hannah for also coming second individually in the Intermediate category. Finally, well done to the Y9/10 boys team in this same category who came first in the team event; Joe Chipperfield, Hayden Bright and Brandon Eynon. Sports Initiatives:

This year the school has opted into taking part in a series of national initiatives run by the Youth Sport Trust (YST) and Sport England. Through the YST the school is taking part in a ‘Girls Get Active’ research project. This involves a class of year 8 students have been at the heart of this research and intervention where all students have been very mature and honest about the barriers stopping them from taking part in physical activity and ideas which would influence them to enjoy PE lessons and extra-curricular clubs further. By taking these suggestions on board this class have been taking part in an intervention where new ideas have been trialled and we will be pleased to share the findings of these once the research has been completed. Also through the YST, we have been chosen as a lead school for their ‘Health and Wellbeing’ project. This entails the school and the YST working together to identify potential barriers that stop people participating in physical activity. We will then work to help students to overcome these in order to experience the health and wellbeing benefits associated with physical activity. The third project we are working on this year is with Sport England. This is a national project that looks at improving the quality of PE and school sport across the country. It entails a funding stream that can be used by schools to upskill staff and offer a range of opportunities to students to allow them to have better experiences at school, promoting healthier lifestyles. We are excited that the next phase of this project will be starting after Easter, where we have invited one ‘champion’ from each department across the school to come and receive some professional development training in how to help encourage students to be more active within their lessons and day to day life. The staff will then go away and experiment with ways to get students more active within their lessons ready for a whole school activity week in July. During this week all KS3 lessons will incorporate some element of physical activity to promote its benefits. Community Links: Sports Development Club Links We have continued to work with a range of clubs and organisations to develop the pathway for our students into club level sport. Girls’ football continues to be a focus sport and we are working in partnership with Herne Bay Rangers who provide coaches to run sessions for our girls on Mondays afterschool. Brian Steele has continued with his basketball sessions for primary and students on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s with the aim of developing basketball and providing a route way to Herne Bay Basketball club. We also have Malcolm, a local tennis coach from Herne Bay Tennis Club continuing to run his tennis sessions for students on a Wednesday afterschool. Darren Molloy who was recently employed by the school as a business teacher used to play rugby for Wasps and is looking at developing rugby at the school and has been in consultation with Whitstable Rugby Club, hopefully more to follow.

Active Life Partnership Our interaction with the onsite leisure provider Active Life continues to flourish thanks to the positive relationship with the Bay Arena Manager Karen Montecelli. Holiday clubs are an established part of the Active Life programme and their fitness classes, held in the school dance facilities in the evenings and weekends, are popular and well-attended. Recreational roller skating numbers continue to be high and our students enjoy lunch time and after school skating, using the Active Life skate equipment free of charge. We have worked together to re-package community activity courses such as trampolining and climbing, which utilise the skills and qualifications of HBH PE staff. An ever-growing number of our sixth form gain employment with the company, from bowls mats attendants to recreation assistants at the Bay Arena to a range of roles at the Herons Pool and Fitness Centre or over at Whitstable Pool. The company has also been very helpful providing work experience placements and sports leadership opportunities for Year 12 and 13 BTEC Sport students at all of their sites, including Kingsmead over in Canterbury.
