  • Kate Douglas Wiggin and Performing American Femininity at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
ABSTRACT Title of Document: ‘She Will Not Submit to Be Ignored’: Kate Douglas Wiggin and Performing American Femininity at the Turn of the Twentieth Century Carrie Jane Cole, Ph.D., 2009 Directed By: Dr. Heather S. Nathans, Department of Theatre “‘She Will Not Submit to Be Ignored’: Kate Douglas Wiggin and Performing American Femininity at the Turn of the Twentieth Century” seeks not only to reintroduce Wiggin as an important American figure of her era, but to do so as an example of the complex restructuring of women’s roles in early twentieth-century American culture via the public performance of self. This dissertation explores how Wiggin performed her different personae throughout her life, how she shifted between the different roles she personified, and how the fluctuation of the definition of “appropriate” feminine behavior affected when and how she performed. The multiple facets of Kate Douglas Wiggin's public personae have never received scholarly attention; this examination offers an ideal opportunity to simultaneously reinvigorate interest in her work and to develop scholarship based on theories of self- representation and performance. By defining and explicating a theory of the performance of self based on discrete acts of self expression, I open the door for scholars in theatre, performance studies, literature, history, and gender studies to re- interrogate and renegotiate previously held conceptions of women’s roles in society in general and within the theatrical sphere in particular. ‘SHE WILL NOT SUBMIT TO BE IGNORED’: KATE DOUGLAS WIGGIN AND PERFORMING AMERICAN FEMININITY AT THE TURN OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY By Carrie Jane Cole Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D.

UC-Studlar-text-CS5.5-revs.indd 18 9/17/2012 11:33:13 AM Chapter 1 Oh, “Doll Divine” Mary Pickford, Masquerade, and the Pedophilic Gaze Mary Pickford, doll divine, Year by year, and every day At the moving-picture play, You have been my valentine. — Vachel Lindsay, “To Mary Pickford, Moving-Picture Actress” Mary Pickford was, arguably, the most famous woman of the first quar- ter of the twentieth century. Inarguably, she was one of the first major stars of the Hollywood film industry and one of the very few — female or male — able to sustain stardom for more than twenty years. Born Gladys Smith in Toronto, Canada, Mary Pickford became a stage actress at age six (published age “5”). She first appeared in motion pictures in one-reel- ers of American Biograph in the spring of 1909. In the 1910s the actress known as “Our Little Mary” quickly cemented her popularity through numerous films that coincided with the industry’s shift to Hollywood and using the actor as a personality for drawing audiences to the box- office.1 Pickford was promoted as “America’s Sweetheart,” “The World’s Sweetheart,” and, as poet Vachel Lindsay dubbed her, “The Queen of the Movies.”2 Her films for Famous Players in the late 1910s regularly netted more than a million dollars a year. In 1918 an article in American Magazine proclaimed what by then was obvious: “Our Little Mary” had become “the most popular motion

Trice, Associate Professor COMMITTEE MEMBER: Kathleen Cairns, Part Time Lecturer COMMITTEE MEMBER: John G. Snetsinger, Part Time Lecturer ABSTRACT Frances Marion and Mary Pickford Christopher Zeidel iv This thesis attempts to find out how Frances Marion and Mary Pickford survived the film industry by having a strong working relationship. It is revealed through letters, films, autobiographies, and newspapers that Marion and Pickford were good friends and had worked closely together for years. Their friendship helped them to work hard enough to continue making films between the late 1910s and 1920s. Unfortunately, this topic is challenging because there has not been enough historical work done to give us a completely clear and accurate picture of how Marion and Pickford helped one another to continue working in the movie industry. More information is available on their careers that have nothing to do with their relationship. There were ways in which they struggled to work and reasons for why they survived the industry that have nothing to do with their working relationship. TABLE OF CONTENTS v CHAPTER I. A "YA" of YesteryearBy RRPDiverse well-realized characters, life lessons demonstrated with a light, sometimes amusing touch, and words of wisdom. This is a great comfort read on par with, if not better than, L.M. Montgomery, Jean Webster, Louisa May Alcott, the Five Little Peppers and the Pollyanna series. It kept me interested from first page to last because of the quality of the writing and I just enjoy trips back into time. My only regret is the lack of any kind of sequel unlike the previously mentioned works. (the same is true for one of her other novels, "Morther Carey's Chickens." It would have been lovely to see Rebecca's continued progress into maturity and what life may hold in store for her. (Although, in truth, it is made crystal clear that her final place will be as a teacher and the wife of Mr.
