Irish Schools Athletics Champions 1916-2015 Updated June 15 2015 In February 1916 Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAA) circularised the principal schools in Ireland regarding the advisability of holding Schoolboys’ Championships. At the IAAA’s Annual General Meeting held on Monday 3rd April, 1916 in Wynne’s Hotel, Dublin, the Hon. Secretary, H.M. Finlay, referred to the falling off in the number of affiliated clubs due to the number of athletes serving in World War I and the need for efforts to keep the sport alive. Based on responses received from schools, the suggestion to hold Irish Schoolboys’ Championships in May was favourably considered by the AGM and the Race Committee of the IAAA was empowered to implement this project. Within a week a provisional programme for the inaugural athletics meeting to be held at Lansdowne Road on Saturday 20th May, 1916 had been published in newspapers, with 7 events and a relay for Senior and 4 events and a relay for Junior Boys. However, the championships were postponed "due to the rebellion" and were rescheduled to Saturday 23rd September, 1916, at Lansdowne Road. In order not to disappoint pupils who were eligible for the championships on the original date of the meeting, the Race Committee of the IAAA decided that “a bona fide schoolboy is one who has attended at least two classes daily at a recognised primary or secondary school for three months previous to 20 th May, except in case of sickness, and who was not attending any office or business”. The inaugural championships took place in ‘quite fine’ weather.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 CONTEXT Portora Royal School is situated in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. It is a single-sex school catering for boys aged eleven to 18. Many of the pupils are drawn from the town and, increasingly, the majority from throughout Co Fermanagh. The enrolment has remained steady over the past five years at around 490 pupils. Approximately 5% of the pupils are entitled to free school meals and 13% of the year 8 to year 12 enrolment have been identified by the school as requiring additional support with aspects of their learning. Over the past five years approximately two-thirds of the intake obtained grade A in the Transfer Procedure. This year the school will celebrate the 400th anniversary of it being granted a Royal Charter. 1.2 FOCUS The inspection focused on leadership and management at all levels across the school and, in addition, on the provision for mathematics and information and communication technology (ICT). The provision for pastoral care and the arrangements for child protection were also evaluated. In September 2007, the school became a Specialist School for the Performing and Visual Arts (PVA). This specialism incorporates the subjects of art and design, drama, moving image arts (MIA) and music.

All our work is unpaid, and Circle members meet regularly in committee every month, as fundraising and planning the plaques are always on-going activities, with the summer months often busy with events. I would like to thank my colleagues on the Circle committee for their support and their valued contributions throughout the year. A voluntary body like ours depends entirely on the continuing commitment of its committee members. On behalf of the Circle I would also like to record how much we appreciate the generosity of our funders: many of the City and District Councils, and those individuals, organisations, and businesses without whose help and support the Circle could not continue in its work commemorating and celebrating the many distinguished people from, or significantly connected with, Ulster, who are exemplified by those remembered this year.

AQW 8505/09 Basil McCrea has asked: To ask the Minister of Education to detail, by sector and in each post-primary school, (i) the number of pupils; (ii) the number of pupils entitled to free school meals; (iii) the number of pupils that take free school meals; (iv) the number of pupils entitled to a free school uniform; and (v) the number of pupils that take a free school uniform, using the most recent October statistics. The information requested is detailed below. Information on enrolment and entitlement to, and uptake of, free school meals is taken from the 2008 School Census and School Meals Census. The latter provides a snapshot of the numbers taking meals on the day on which the census information is gathered. Census information is not collected on the number of pupils who are entitled to a school uniform grant. The figures shown in column (D) therefore relate to the number of pupils who applied for and were in receipt of the grant in the 2008/09 school year. It should also be noted that the grant is not intended to cover the full cost of a uniform; rather it is designed to assist those in need with the cost of purchase. [email protected] Page !1 November 7, 2018 The public affairs officer role, which has a salary of between £31,892 and £38,870, features essential criteria including a "good knowledge of the political structures and processes in the NI Assembly and how they interact with those in the UK Parliament". Applicants will also be responsible for "keeping up to date with political issues in NI and the Republic, analysing public policy and legislation from a Christian perspective, and assisting in representing the Church's position to policy makers and the media". Other criteria includes a "basic grasp of the major public policy issues in the UK and Republic of Ireland and an understanding of biblical teaching on at least some of these issues". It follows a series of controversies affecting the Presbyterian Church in recent months. In June the Presbyterian Church's General Assembly decided that same-sex partners could not receive communion, and their children could not be baptised in the Church. More than 230 influential members of the Church later put their names to a letter criticising the ruling, which was headlined 'A Cry From The Heart’. 5 July 2012 AQW 13464/11-15 Peter Weir MLA: To ask the Minister of Education to detail the current number of Governor vacancies in each post-primary school. DE1/12/115970 22 November 2012 AQW 13464/11-15 ANSWER My Department did not hold the information requested. Much of it has been provided by the Education & Library Boards and the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools since the schools reopened in September 2012. The information is now available and is being placed in the Assembly Library. Over all of the post primary schools just under half have vacancies and approximately a quarter have only one vacancy. This is not unusual given that governors serve in a voluntary capacity and for personal and business reasons a number periodically resign during their 4 year term of office and have to be replaced by the relevant nominating and appointing authorities. I can confirm that the proceedings of a Board of Governors is not invalidated by any vacancy among its members. School business is continuing to be conducted as usual and I am continuing to make appointments to fill vacancies on the Boards of Governors of voluntary grammar and grant maintained integrated schools. Anne and Bill Barbour A Tribute from John Maxwell Enniskillen Integrated Schools I first met Bill Barbour when I was a pupil at Portora Royal School and I have a particular memory of a certain rugby match when Bill was the referee. These house matches often tended to be bad tempered, somewhat vicious affairs and this one was no different. At one point a fight broke out among the forwards in a ruck, followed by a shout :” For God's sake get off me or I'll****” -more profanity which I'll not repeat. Thereupon there was a very loud blast on a whistle, followed by complete silence while we waited to see what Bill would do -and expecting at the very least to be severely reprimanded. After a pause which seemed to go on forever, Bill said very quietly, ”I'm afraid the Lord cannot be much help to you in this situation.“ Both teams dissolved in laughter and a potentially difficult situation was diffused. This was typical of Bill's way of handling difficulties and I learnt a lesson that day. When the Remembrance Day bomb occurred in Enniskillen in 1987, a group called Enniskillen Together was formed, whose aim was to try and bridge the political and religious divide in a way which, we hoped, would help in some way to improve a situation which we feared could get worse. A sub committee was formed to examine the possibility of developing an integrated education sector as part of the education system here. Bill was an enthusiastic member of this group.
