Reflections From The Pastor One of the most beloved and familiar images for God in the Bible is that of a shepherd. THE VIEWPOINT It is an image that we reflect upon each year at this time as the post-Easter lectionary THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY CHURCH readings point us towards our shepherd-like God. (This year’s readings: Psalm 23 & John 10:11-18.) United Church of Christ But what do we really know about shepherd and sheep? Have you ever cared for sheep? May 2012 I haven’t. In fact, as an urban dweller for much of my life I have rarely even been near one. So, I have been doing some research. And what I have found makes me stand in awe and wonder that anyone would ever want to be a shepherd, let alone God. I also squirm with discomfort at the thought that I might be viewed as a sheep. For sheep, I have learned, are high maintenance creatures. They require constant attention and meticulous care. They are prone to get lost or stuck in brambles and they are fearful and Spring Fling timid—even the sudden appearance of a small dog can cause them to run. They are also impatient—if a flock is being led to clean, cool water they are prone to stop and drink from muddy pools along the way—unable to wait or envision something better. And, perhaps worst DinnerIt’s back andto the 50s andAuction 60s! of all, they are creatures of habit. If not guided to fresh pasture, a flock will graze and graze From the Big Bopper to the Beatles.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

  • Animated Stereotypes –
Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Alexander Lindgren, 36761 Pro gradu-avhandling i engelska språket och litteraturen Handledare: Jason Finch Fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi Åbo Akademi 2020 ÅBO AKADEMI – FACULTY OF ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND THEOLOGY Abstract for Master’s Thesis Subject: English Language and Literature Author: Alexander Lindgren Title: Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Supervisor: Jason Finch Abstract: Walt Disney Animation Studios is currently one of the world’s largest producers of animated content aimed at children. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

Fighting and dancing games both emerge from Asia, and they both foreground the body. They strip down bodily movement into elemental actions like stepping, kicking, leaping, and tapping, and make these the form and content of the game. I argue that fighting and dancing games point to a key dynamic in videogame play: the programming of the body into the algorithmic logic of the game, a logic that increasingly organizes the informatic structure of everyday work and leisure in a globally interconnected information economy.

  • A Garfield Fan Reviews the Garfield Movie for As Long As I Can
A Garfield fan reviews The Garfield Movie For as long as I can remember, I have been a very huge fan of Garfield. My parents owned a couple of the reprint books when I was a kid, and I loved to read and re-read them over and over again. I watched the Garfield and Friends TV show whenever I could, and I also got a lot of the Garfield books put out alongside the comics, like the Pet Force series. I probably got on the nerves of my parents and a lot of my friends just talking about Garfield constantly. And I loved his cartoons so much that he was one of my biggest inspirations to become a cartoon artist myself. If it weren’t for Garfield, I probably would have never set foot into art school, and you probably would have never seen me here on Deviant Art (or Furaffinity, or whichever website you‘re reading this from). So you could imagine when around 2002 or 2003 how excited I was when the Garfield website announced a movie adaptation. Around this time the comic was turning 25 years old, and the movie seemed like it would be a landmark commemoration. I remember checking the site constantly to get updates on who was being cast, which characters from the comic were appearing, and new characters created specifically for the movie. I didn’t like that the movie was going to be live action with a CGI Garfield rather than completely animated, but that wouldn’t mean the movie would be bad, would it? When I started seeing the first trailers for the movie, I didn‘t know what to think of them.
