DAYTIME AT NIGHTTIME - -=-~~ ~- ~~"""'- -""-~' '-"" -~ A CONVERSATION WITH CAROLL SPINNEY By Steve Rogers

at do a giant, child-like bird and a grumpy trash can monster have in common? If the two in question are named Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch of television's much celebrated , then it must be the venerable W:puppeteer, Carol I Spinney! For nearly forty years, Spinney has been splitting his time inside these two iconoclastic children's characters, enlightening and entertaining children and adults of all ages. In honor of his unique contribution, he is being recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

Spinney took some time from his daily chores at 123 Sesame Street to offer some insights into his world of children's television .

"Caroll is the heart and soul Steve Rogers: What kind of questions do people ask you regarding your tenure on of these wildly different but Sesame Street? equally beloved characters. Big Carol! Spinney: Mostly, they tell me what they like best about Sesame Street; how Bird and Oscar are the 'yin' and my work affects them; what Sesame Street has taught them. When we started, my 'yang' of one lovely man. My daughter Jesse was 18 months old, so I had a built-in audience. One day, when she father would be truly grateful was three years old, she was sitting at the table and she looked up at me and said, that Caroll stuck with these "You know what? This table is a rectangle." I didn't think that was something that wonderful friends for so many a three year old would say and I feel that Sesame Street was responsible for that. years:' - CHERYL HENSON DAUG H TE R OF JIM H ENSON S R: The rumor is that Jim Henson discovered you? Is it true?

C S: Well, I hadn't tried out for Sesame Street or Jim . I was working in television in Boston at the time and I decided to go to a national puppet festival hoping for inspiration. I decided to put on this elaborate show using animation with rear projection but everything went wrong. Jim came up to me after the show and said, "I really like what you were trying to do there." That was typical Jim Henson . He could be managing several projects at the same time but he was always a really nice, compassionate guy. We really lost something when he died. He was a real, true genius.

"Caroll creates the voice and motion S R: Big Bird is world famous so it might be easy to overlook your other alter behind these two beloved characters ego, Oscar the Grouch. How much of Oscar is the flipside of Carol! Spinney and and his talent and ability make him why is he an important character to children? a master of all masters. His passion CS: Oscar's values are socially the opposite. Honestly, I'm often surprised at what and drive for his craft keeps the he's going to say, but my mother and father were very funny people and that's torch lit for all puppeteers and he's where some of it comes from. Oscar is a nice change after a day of being Big Bird. an inspiration at Sesame Street and To be someone different than who you normally are is an interesting experience. around the world. We all love you I once had this really big, tough guy tell me how much he liked the "nasty guy in and celebrate this recognition of the trash can" and then he asked me to insult him! The only trouble I ever have your achievement with you:' with Oscar is when he's really rude and getting away with it. That's when I stop - KEVIN CLASH and question it. In the end, I think it teaches kids that it takes all kinds in this PERF O RM ER O F ElMO world.

S R: Have you told Big Bird and Oscar about the Lifetime Achievement Award? What was their reaction?

C 5: Oscar said, "I don't deserve it," while Big Bird said, "What's that?" Truthfully, a lot of their humor is based on what someone says to them, not me. Sometimes, with Oscar, when I "face" him, I'm intimidated. I stammer to answer him. But, you know, he has a heart of gold. He wouldn't want anyone to know that, so he hides it. Big Bird on the other hand, he's not hiding a thing. He's just all heart!
