3 AROUND THE STATION… Dog Days of Summer: Navy Band Northeast Finishes the Summer Season Strong By Musician 3rd Class Jesse Chavez Navy Band Northeast The term “dog days” was coined by the ancient Greeks, signifying the hottest time of year when the con- stellation Canis Major (which contains the star Sirius) rises in the sky even before the sun. Nowadays, for many the term refers to the time best spent at the beach. While summer is a time of relaxation and a break from the hus- tle of work routines for most, at Navy Band Northeast it’s a time to connect with our community. As summer winds down and we begin preparations for fall performances, Navy Band Northeast is rounding out one of its busiest seasons with a few last big performances. being a Navy musician so rewarding. Before we say goodbye to summer, Navy Band North- east has a few more capstone performances; two notable concerts are the Pops Ensemble performing at the Sum- mer’s End Concert in East Greenwich, RI and also at the Strand Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, NY. From all of us at Navy Band Northeast, we hope that summer has been a time of relaxation and refreshment. We are happy to be a part of so many people’s summer events and look forward to many more engagements in the much cooler weather of fall.

Following Capt. James Cook's first circumnavigation in the Endeavour, the Royal Navy sold the ship to a private owner, who renamed her the Lord Sandwich and sent her to carry British and Hessian troops to serve in the American Revolution. We actively se- lect programs and part- ners who assist veterans from WWII to OIF/ OEF. We have a rich tradition of enhancing the lives of thousands through our community service programs and special projects. We understand the current-day veteran community is far more diverse than it was 20 or 30 years ago. We put services at the forefront of what we do and leave the old stigma of dark, smoky bars that the VFW has been known for in the past. From local grassroots ideas to national influence, we work every day to make a difference. It's our strength as an organization.
