Anthony Addington (1713-1790) was a physician who ministered to, among others, William Pitt the elder and George III. Philadelphia: Benerman & Wilson, 1872. £1,975.00 First edition, small 4to (220 x 165 mm), viii, [1], 10-234pp., 12 actual photographs laid- down of 5 plates, numerous illustrs., within the text, some light scattered spotting, mottling to endpapers, original publisher's bevelled green cloth, gilt vignette to upper cover, a very good copy. A rare and comprehensive guide to the science and method of portrait photography, illustrated with 12 original photographic examples of how to set up and mount the perfect portrait. It was described in an 1872 issue of The Photographic Times as "the most complete, elaborate, and comprehensive work on photography that has ever been published." "Beginning in the 1860s, vignetted heads and upper torsos became a popular style of portrait photographs known as the "Rembrandt style". Kurtz perfected a process using a series of reflectors to concentrate and bounce sunlight onto the subject's face. With the subject seated against a dark background, the result emphasized strong features and masked weaker ones."—Jezierski, Enterprising Images, p.69. MADRAS PRINTING 4. Matthews, 1794. £875.00 First edition, small 4to (180 x 120), [2], 46pp., upper margins closely cropped, encroaching into "Letters" at head of title page, recent cloth-backed marbled boards, leather gilt titled label on upper cover. A rare Madras printing of one of several publications by the surgeon and horticulturist James Anderson (1738-1809) on his project of producing silk on the Coromandel Coast in India. ANGELO (Domenico Malevolti Tremamondo) The School of Fencing, with a General Explanation of the Principal Attitudes and Positions Peculiar to the Art. Dedicated to their Royal Highnesses The Duke of Gloucester and Prince Henry-Frederic. London: Printed for S. Hooper, 1765. £3,450.00 Second edition, first English, oblong folio (295 x 480 mm), [6], 63, [5]pp., parallel English and French texts, with an additional French title page, 47 fine engraved plates by Ruyland and Hall after J. Gruyn, some foxing and spotting (worse to the first few text leaves and plates), also a little light offsetting, plate 16 with a closed tear just touch outer border of image, expertly rebound in half sprinkled tan calf, period marbled sides, red morocco label. Provenance: Unidentified bookplate with crest of an ass's head holding an arrow, the motto "Faire mon devoir." The first edition with English text of this most important and beautifully illustrated work on fencing, preceded by the French edition published in 1763 as L'ecole des armes avec l'explication générale des principales attitudes et positions concernant l'escrime. A later London edition appeared in 1787, but this was a reduced octavo rather than the more desirable folio format as here. The 47 finely engraved plates were drawn from life for which Angelo posed as principal model and "it was widely praised for its elegant style, the usefulness of its illustrations, and its original emphasis on fencing as a source of gentlemanly exercise rather than as a necessary preparation for duel... The success of his [fencing] school, together with his guide to fencing, guaranteed Angelo's place in a social circle which included men like David Garrick, Thomas Sheridan, Samuel Foote, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, George Stubbs, and Christian Bach. Among his friends Angelo also counted the chevalier d'Eon, who stayed for a time at Carlisle House, where he gave fencing lessons."—(Oxford DNB). Cohen-de Ricci, p.83; Thimm, p.10. 7. Dublin: Printed and Published by Thomas Burnside, 1802. £345.00 Eighth edition, 8vo (205 x 120 mm), xvi, 197, [1]pp., frontispiece silhouette portrait of Astley and 9 engraved plates, in an elegant twentieth century half green morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spine lightly faded, spine lettered in gilt direct, t.e.g. Philip Astley (1742-1814), equestrian performer and circus proprietor. As well as being considered the creator of the modern circus (Astley's Amphitheatre), Astley also had a very successful career in the Army. At the age of 17 he enrolled in the 15th Light Dragons, a cavalry regiment newly formed by Colonel Granville Elliott.

R A Berman 1 | P a g e Abstract Following the appointment of its first aristocratic Grand Masters in the 1720s and in the wake of its connections to the scientific Enlightenment, ‘Free and Accepted’ Masonry rapidly became part of Britain’s national profile and the largest and arguably the most influential of Britain’s extensive clubs and societies. The new organisation did not evolve naturally from the mediaeval guilds and religious orders that pre-dated it, but was reconfigured radically by a largely self-appointed inner core. Freemasonry became a vehicle for the expression and transmission of the political and religious views of those at its centre, and for the scientific Enlightenment concepts that they championed. The ‘Craft’ also offered a channel through which many sought to realise personal aspirations: social, intellectual and financial. Through an examination of relevant primary and secondary documentary evidence, this thesis seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of contemporary English political and social culture, and to explore the manner in which Freemasonry became a mechanism that promoted the interests of the Hanoverian establishment and connected and bound a number of élite metropolitan and provincial figures.

Dreyfus, Nonesuch Press, 108). The steel plate included with this set is number 605, ‘Solemn reference is made to Mr. Bunsby’ from Dombey and Son (Chapter 23, facing p. 458), engraved by H. K. Browne (‘Phiz’), with the typed letter of authenticity on Chapman & Hall headed paper, signed by Arthur Waugh. Intended as a definitive edition of Dickens’ works the Nonesuch Press edition was printed using the original steel plates and woodblocks created by Chapman & Hall for the illustrations in the first editions of the books. Each set of the works was accompanied by one of the original engraved plates or woodblocks, of which there were 877. The original steel-engraved plate in this set is by ‘Phiz’ (Hablot Knight Browne), who was Dickens’ friend and the most highly regarded illustrator of his works.

    Ric Berman, Espionage, Diplomacy and the Lodge: Charles Delafaye and The Secret Department of the Post Office (Goring Heath: The Old Stables Press, 2017), 299 pages, ISBN 9780995756809. £20.00 Ric Berman’s latest offering provides a fascinating insight into the intelligence war waged by employees of the Whig government against the ever-present threat of Jacobite plots and conspiracies in Britain in the early to mid-eighteenth century. Berman approaches the theme via two related subjects: the freemason, spy-master, Justice of the Peace, Whig and pro-Hanoverian under-secretary for the Northern and Southern departments, Charles Delafaye (1677-1762); and a key tool in the Hanoverian anti-Jacobite arsenal, the aptly named ‘Secret Department of the Post Office’ and its Deciphering Branch. Berman begins by demonstrating how Anderson’s Constitutions of 1723 saw important changes introduced into Freemasonry, including new Masonic ritual passages that reinforced loyalties to the government and monarchy. Berman explains how the formation of Grand Lodge in 1717 (a date challenged by some historians) was in large part a political reaction to the extant Jacobite threat and, in particular, to the Stuart’s attempted restoration of 1715. The illustrious Horn Tavern lodge (and several other London lodges) are shown by Berman to be bastions of pro-Hanoverian loyalty and he identifies several brethren such as Charles Delafaye, Thomas Pelham-Hollis (Secretary of State for the Southern Department) and John Lefebure (Head of the Secret Department of the Post Office) occupying senior positions within Walpole’s Whig government (Robert Walpole was himself a freemason). These posts were concerned with national security, intelligence gathering, counter-surveillance, spying and the opening and decryption of suspected Jacobite or criminal correspondences.

Each of the organizations had a technical dimension, and the people he worked with were often the same people he worked with in politics and science. In the first section of this chapter, we briefly consider the organizations, beginning with a hospital. For twenty years Robert Walpole kept the country in peace and prosperity, during which time several hospitals were established, Westminster in 1720, Guy’s in 1724, and others. These were hospitals in the usual sense of the word. In addition there was a new charitable hospice for unwanted children, the Foundling Hospital (Fig. 5.2). Inspired by foundations for this purpose in Amsterdam, Paris, and elsewhere, the Foundling Hospital was the culmi- nation of an arduous and heartfelt campaign by Thomas Coram on behalf of “great numbers of Helpless Infants daily exposed to Destruction.” The Hospital was incorporated by royal charter in 1739 in a ceremony attended by bankers and merchants from the city and by six dukes and eleven earls, who set the tone of the endeavor.

He was born at Kew Green, Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey, and baptised on 9 October 1755 at St Anne's Church, Kew Green. Following his father's death on 10 October 1759, the family moved on 15 April 1760 to Richmond. In 1762, Francis lodged at Hargreaves in St Martin's Lane, London. On 17 April 1764, he lodged with Mrs Bathurst, Charterhouse Square and attended the public school of St Bartholomew. In 1770, he went to Mrs Betesworth's Academy in Kingston, near Portsmouth, Hampshire, leaving in 1772 to join Mr Lockee's Military Academy, Little Chelsea, London, and later to Colonel Gallatin's School of Equitation for 7 months.
