If I become even a fraction of the mentor and friend you have been to me, then I will have lived a very good life. v ABSTRACT For centuries, Aristotle’s ethos has been a crucial component of persuasive rhetoric, with flagrant violations of character extinguishing the credibility of speakers and rendering their messages ineffective. However, the 2016 US presidential election challenged the rhetorical value of good character and left voters unable to articulate feelings about perceived moral transgressions. In some ways, this inability to express what bothered many is tied to the various constraints of the first-year writing classroom, where instructors often oversimplify definitions of ethos in a way that removes a facet known as aretê—a concept defined as moral virtue and one especially beneficial for navigating morally complex and controversial conversations. This study argues for a revival of aretê in our classrooms as a way of helping students engage in and explore their own questions of morality, character, and ethos. Utilizing revised conceptions of ethos and aretê that incorporate modern notions of moral virtue, this study analyzed transcripts of the three presidential debates to quantify how and when Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump employed morally loaded language. The results of the lexical analysis surfaced a reduced moral vocabulary, which illustrates the need for a more nuanced understanding of ethos and a larger aretiac lexicon in our classroom. What this research advocates for is not that we anchor every iteration of ethos in moral virtue, but rather that alternative conceptions are invited into the classroom as a way of helping students This Article argues that the occupation that produces the nation’s greatest share of leaders needs to do more to prepare them for that role. Attention is long overdue. Over two-thirds of Americans think that the nation has a leadership crisis, and only a small minority have trust in lawyers, particularly those in leadership roles. To promote a deeper understanding of what is lacking, this Article summarizes key insights from contemporary leadership research. Part I explores what is known about the qualities and styles that make for effective leadership. Part II surveys what is known about how lawyers can develop those capabilities. Part III looks at diversity in leadership and describes barriers that stand in the way for women lawyers and lawyers of color. Much of what he revealed in the book was already revealed on TV. Byrne Crisis of Character of the Clintons as being unprofessional and poor leaders. He felt it was his duty to Crisis of Character the public of their true character, lest they get into the White House again. The secret service has discredited this book. The author obviously has some mental issues to deal with. Very good read, detailed first person account. I thought this book was an excellent book detailing what the life of a secret service officer I'd like but to give us the many reasons why we do not want the Clinton's back in the White House, Thank goodness they are now history. I checked this book out to see what the contents were. Unfortunately, I could Crisis of Character continue to read it. Regardless of Crisis of Character a person votes for, it doesn't seem appropriate that staff who are entrusted to protect Presidents and their families reveal intimate details about their personal lives. Talk about living in a glass bubble! EVERY marriage has ups and downs - some worse than others obviously. How couples deal with those times of strife should remain private and not published for the world to see. The fact that they are public Crisis of Character does not mean that their personal lives should be put on display.

Nickel September 12, 2016 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: crisis, crisis thought, politics, media, security Crisis Thought Edwin Kent Morris ABSTRACT Crisis thought is an idea that gives a name to and accounts for some of the problematics of the sign ‘crisis’ in political, social, cultural, and economic discourse. Specifically, crisis thought is a discursive formation, a concept used loosely here to refer to an assemblage of signs such as ‘anxiety’ or ‘fear’ that evoke or invoke similar, but inaccurate connotations as ‘crisis’ in political and everyday usage. The general question this study grapples with is why political, social, cultural, and economic ‘crises’ are often recognized and, yet, are seemingly unrecognized, unaddressed, or accepted as a basic part of political and ordinary life. This study focuses on the mobilization of crisis thought by the 24/7 news media and throughout politics in the United States. Working outside of economic and Marxist traditions of crisis studies, this study focuses on the effects of crisis thought by way of a critical, interpretive, and interdisciplinary approach. There are two goals of this project. The first is to offer some of the linkages between crisis thought, security, and liberalism. The second goal is to examine through various examples and vignettes how, where, and why crisis thought manifests itself in US politics and in ordinary life.
