TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2020 PATIENCE THE ESSENCE AS HALL OF FAME TRAINER GARY JONES PASSES AWAY AT 76 QUALITY COMES THROUGH by Bill Finley Trainer Gary Jones, who was inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 2014, passed away Sunday at his home in Del Mar, California. His son, trainer Marty Jones, said his father had been in hospice care and died of natural causes. He was 76. AHe was an amazing person, first and foremost,@ his son said. AFor me, that=s the most important thing. On top of that, he was a great horse trainer.@ Gary Jones was the son of longtime California-based trainer Farrell Jones and took over his father=s stable upon his retirement in 1975. He picked right up where his father left off, winning with the first horse he ever saddled, King Wako, on Dec. 26, 1975 at Santa Anita, and quickly established himself as one of the leading trainers in Southern California. THURSDAY, 21 MARCH 2019 ARQANA TESTS ARGENTINE WATERS PRENDERGAST: A COLOSSUS By Kelsey Riley Buenos Aires, ArgentinaBArqana=s inaugural Gran Venta OF THE CURRAGH Selecta sale of 91 handpicked Argentinean yearlings takes place on Thursday evening at San Isidro Racecourse, and while all parties involved admit that this pilot project is rather experimental, the signs couldn=t have been more positive 24 hours out. Arqana=s Eric Hoyeau and Freddy Powell were among a small international contingent laying their eyes on the yearlings for the first time on Wednesday at Haras Abolengo and Haras Vacacion, the two studs that have teamed up to supply the yearlings for the sale. Powell, who has been instrumental in paving the way for this sale along with Arqana=s South American representative and local bloodstock agent Matias Villamil, said, AThey were really what we were expecting; top-class. When we were looking at the horses, I said to Eric, >There are some physicals that I=d love to have in [Arqana=s] August [yearling sale].@ As for his expectations ahead of Thursday evening, Powell Kevin Prendergast after winning the 2016 Irish 2000 Guineas admitted it is uncharted territoryBfor any international sale Racingfotos.com company. AShe was very quick and he was a very good-looking Dubawi; he=s a nice horse, and Dubawi is a great sire.@ Magnier, who signed for the sale-topping Dubawi filly for 2.1 million gns here two years ago on behalf of Richard Henry, confirmed the colt is bound for Ballydoyle. When asked about Godolphin=s purchases of Coolmore-sired yearlings at recent sales, Magnier said, Ait=s not our policy to comment on other people=s business.@ Ed Sackville is the manager for the Keswick family of Rockcliffe Stud, which raced Sky Lantern and bred this colt, and he said, Awe are obviously delighted. • The Top 10 Emerging Broodmare Sires in North America and Europe 1 2
hile the broodmare sire represents just a name on a crowded catalog The Top 10 page, he can have a significant impact on the resulting foal. Since Widentifying successful broodmare sires early in their careers can help lift Emerging up a breeding program, we at TrueNicks profiled 10 young, emerging broodmare sires in North America and Europe. Broodmare sires in our top 10 were foaled no earlier than 1996, have at least 2% stakes winners to foals of racing age as Broodmare Sires broodmare sire, and are represented by two or more graded/group stakes winners in North America in that role (see full charts at the end of this report). and Europe 1. Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat—Mariah’s Storm, by Rahy) In 2012, Giant’s Causeway was the youngest sire in the top 50 broodmare sires by worldwide earnings with a total of 14 stakes winners in the calendar year. With another 14 stakes winners to date in 2013, “The Iron Horse” can certainly lay claim to being the preeminent broodmare sire of his generation and the leader on our list of top emerging broodmare sires. Giant’s Causeway has been either a model racehorse or a model sire his entire career. Sold in utero when Coolmore’s John Magnier bought his dam for $2.6 million, Giant’s Causeway won nine races at 2 and 3 years, including the Prix de la Salamandre (Fr-I), St. James’s Palace (Eng-I), Coral Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I), Juddmonte International Stakes (Eng-I), Esat Digifone Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I), and Champagne Lanson Sussex (Eng-I) on his way to being named European champion 3-year-old colt in 2000.

When it comes to Europe=s top 2-year-old sprints in the summer, the female of the species often proves deadlier than the male. For example, the G2 Prix Robert Papin has fallen to fillies in seven of the last 12 years, with three of those winning fillies going on to Classic success at three. Last Sunday saw La Collina become the third filly in the last eight years to take the G1 Phoenix S. As one of her predecessors, Saoirse Abu, went on to take the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and to finish a close third in the 1000 Guineas, La Collina has to be considered a very bright prospect. However, she was by no means the only potentially top-class juvenile filly on display in Europe last week. I hesitate to suggest that Discourse could become another Zenyatta for Street Cry, but this Godolphin filly possesses bags of scope and plenty of talent, as she showed with her impressive victory in the G3 Sweet Solera S.

  • CRAVEN SALE a BREEZE-UP BAROMETER Its Focus on the Main Event, the May 4 Chris Mcgrath Has a Preview for the Two-Day Tattersalls Craven GI Kentucky Derby
TUESDAY, 16 APRIL 2019 THE WEEKLY WRAP: LONG MAY THEY RUN CRAVEN SALE A by Emma Berry BREEZE-UP BAROMETER Apologies for the tardy start of this weekly digest. It's certainly not a case of taking the Newmarket resident's view that the Flat only really begins today with the start of the Craven meeting, more that family matters rendered this correspondent a non-runner in the first fortnight of the season. Fortunately we have had the excellent Pat Smullen to give us his take on the racing scene, and his much-enjoyed weekly column will be back tomorrow. Even ahead of today's racing action, Newmarket's Rowley Mile has already been the scene of plenty of activity this week, with around 120 breezers having been put under the spotlight yesterday morning ahead of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale, which starts its two-day run later today. The 2-year-old sales are not universally loved but a good reminder that such auctions can offer more than just blink-and-you'll-miss-'em juveniles was served by the admirable Stormy Antarctic (GB) (Stormy Atlantic) on Sunday. War Front colt out of Quarter Moon breezes | Emma Berry Now six, the Ed Walker-trained gelding added the G3 Kalkmann Frujahrs-Meile at Dusseldorf to his record on his 2019 by Chris McGrath debut, extending his tally to seven wins and 11 places from 26 NEWMARKET, UK--With the breeze-up calendar this year starts.
