RTV B92’s Activities on exercising the principles of the Global Compact

HUMAN RIGHTS

Fight for human rights and equality of all citizens is built in the basic principles of RTV B92’s work and its editorial policy. Once the leader in the media fight for democratic changes in Serbia, nowadays RTV B92 carries out its mission on respecting the principles of the UN Universal Human Rights Declaration through regular reporting on the problems of the endangered and minority groups, national, sexual and other social minority groups in the Serbian society, as well as making extra efforts in commencing the reconciliation process after the conflicts waged in the region in the past. Our staff is highly devoted to treating such issues, both personally and professionally, so it often happens that they take part in other public activities and campaigns outside of B92.

WORKING STANDARDS

At the start of 2011, RTV B92 has gone through ownership transformation process. In this process, big efforts have been invested into on one hand rationalizing company’s activities, thus reducing the number of employees to the optimal measure, securing maximum rights to the employees that are treated as redundant, or decided to consensual termination of working agreement. Human recourse department has established benefits for the employees that decide to terminate their work contract by mutual agreement that exceed the rights protected with the current Labor Act, so this highly sensitive process was conducted with minimum stressful effects. Instead of being offered severance pay according to the principle third part of salary per year for the first 10 years plus the quarter for the rest of the years, the employees have been offered the principle of half of the salary per year for the first 10 years, plus the third of the salary for the rest of the years. In cooperation with other friendly companies, such as Studio B or the Youth Center (Dom omladine building), some of the former B92’s employees got jobs there.

Continuous advancement of knowledge and working capacities of the employees is still a strategic priority of our company. The training and educational programs for acquiring knowledge in accordance with European standards through cooperation with BBC and other famous international media schools in cooperation with EAR (European Agency for Reconstruction) which is being implemented since 2005, as well as foreign language training courses for those interested are part of B92’s program. Health of the employees comes first in RTV B92. Regular annual medical check-ups are being conduct in cooperation with the private policlinic “Dr Ristic”. Special attention is being devoted to the employees that work on the position that are being perceived as highly risky (jobs at great heights, or in broadcasting technical equipment environment), introducing special protection measures, as well the obligation of regular special check-ups. Pro bono mammographic breast check up for more than 50 women employees was conducted in cooperation with the Serbian Institute for oncology and radiology on the new mobile digital mammography unit. Free of charge recreation is being provided to the employees in cooperation with the Sports Center Novi Beograd and fitness studio Orange. Regular six-month checks of air-conditioning filters are being conducted with the aim of preventing allergic reactions.

6 F U N D

Commitment to advancing living standards of the employees has been confirmed through resolving housing issue by securing favorable housing loans with commercial banks and giving guarantees for their payment, covering expenses for the special medical interventions (surgical procedures) and offering financial support in case of death of the immediate family member or parent. New parents got financial assistance upon baby’s birth in the form of voucher.

There is no form of gender discrimination in our company. We are proud to announce that 53% of the employees are female, and that the ratio in the management staff is even more favorable to female employees and it amounts to 75%. General Manager of RTV B92 and TV B92 is a woman, as well as director of Radio B92, Sales Director, Promotion Director, Web Site Director, as well as News Director. As it can be noticed, those are the most responsible positions in the company.

RTV B92 opens up the possibility of work opportunity for the persons with disabilities and presently, we have three persons with large percentage of disability working for our company.

B92 employees are members of diverse journalistic associations and unions presently active in Serbia. Therefore, they enjoy all the guaranteed rights and freedom of expression.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Commenced activities regarding the introduction of the highest possible ecological standards can provide the implementation of the idea of RTV B92 becoming the first green media in Serbia. Apart from concrete measures taken on improving environmental protection within the company, B92 is one of the founders of ”Ecotopia" Fund and as such, it represents the main media channel for conducting campaigns for strengthening ecological awareness for taking up concrete actions. On B92 web site’s news pages, one page is devoted to the ecology related news, while Radio B92 airs 30-minutes weekly show entitled Supernatural, devoted to this issue.

7 F U N D

Within the company, protective measures from electronic emissions (of broadcast technical devices) have been taken, including expanded procedures pertaining to recycling waste materials (apart from paper, to the cans, as well, in cooperation with Recan). Due to the current crisis and big expenditures for the certification for ISO standard 14001 in ecology, we have temporarily given up the idea of formally applying for it, while earlier commenced practical measures have been resumed.

ANTI-CORRUPTION: News desk of RTV B92 and its journalists are known for their role in revealing the most diverse corruptive affairs in the Serbian society. Shows such as Insider and its journalistic staff, led by Brankica Stankovic, are being perceived as the holders of investigative journalism that often produces very concrete results, including judicial reactions, such was the case of Kolubara that ended with arrests of the heads of this company that abused their position in order to get huge personal benefits.

BATTLE FOR THE BABIES

Battle for the Babies present B92 Fund’s campaign for supporting maternity wards all over Serbia, with the aim of improving the conditions for the care of the newborns and their mothers. This campaign was launched on September 1, 2011, when B92 TV’s news desk aired a story on the 40 year old incubators on the Belgrade Institute for Neonatology.

In the attempt to resolve this problem and offer better chances for the babies to survive, B92 Fund has, in partnership with the colleagues from the advertising agency Saatchi i Saatchi, designed and launched this campaign entitled “Battle for the Babies”, with the ultimate aim of providing the acquisition of the hundred incubators for the health institutions all over Serbia. So, after a three month period, the campaign was extended, with the aim of collecting funds for purchasing 200 incubators.

On November 17, 2011, we have marked Victory Day in the campaign “Battle for the Babies”. There are many heroes of this battle, both Company’s Heroes and Individual Heroes who through their donations generously provided the acquisition of incubators to all the cities of Serbia. However, their contribution also lies in their voluntary activities, in providing and giving space to the little heroes, in offering help to the activists of the Battle for the Babies , thus contributing to conducting this campaign in the best possible way. With their generous acts, they have shown that every problem can be resolved if the people of good will and intensions unite and join the efforts in fulfilling certain aim.
