Jai Hind, Jai Bharat! 3 Message from the Team R Shankar Welcome to the 7th HEAL National Health Writers and Editors Chairperson of Convention. It has been a momentous journey for Health Organizing Committee, Essayists and Authors League (HEAL) since 2008 when a HEAL Health Writers nebulous idea to strSince then, HEAL has been head and Convention shoulders above others in upholding high values in healthcare by bridging medical writers and stakeholders.ing together journalists and editors covering health germinated. The focus has always been on how and why health stories need to be high on facts and low on sensation. Apart from national conventions, HEAL has also held numerous workshops at state levels focusing on vernacular newspapers and magazines. Here the focus was on interpreting data, finding suitable medical terminologies in regional languages and conveying the story with a local flavour. The seventh Heal Health Writers Convention marks another important milestone in discussing and deliberating health issues that are currently relevant to India. Though policy-makers and domain experts, the convention will empower journalists covering health beat and online health writers with the latest information in critical and key areas. The convention has important topics ranging from nutrition to agriculture and Ayushman Bharat to organ donation. While information and gaining knowledge are important, the cornerstone that will determine success of healthcare reporting is accuracy, especially in an era where social media can bend minds and dangerously influence people through false news on medicine, cures, treatment options and, more alarming, self-treatment. I wish the convention all the best even as HEAL strenuously serves as a platform to connect top class domain experts with acclaimed and aspiring healthcare journalists and writers. Sukri Jain In a society where the printed word is considered sacrosanct, Founder Member the media plays a crucial role in providing relevant and accurate information to the masses. This is of utmost importance especially when it comes to health. The Indian media, with its wide reach and influence, holds the power to improve health seeking behaviour of the masses and help them make the switch from curative to preventive health. But it is unfair to expect the media to be experts in all domains of the healthcare sector, which is a huge and ever evolving sector. In such a scenario, HEAL Foundation’s pioneering capacity building initiatives play an indispensable role in helping media become more sensitive to health issues and cover them accurately, efficiency and with the required urgency. The national health writers convention, which has now successfully completed 7 editions, is India’s only platform which works dedicatedly to support the health media to stay abreast with key developments in the healthcare industry. Bringing together close to a 100 health writers from across country and engaging leading KOLs from the public and private sector to build capacity of this niche audience of health media is a herculean task performed with great diligence, thought and effort by Dr. Swadeep Srivastava and his team of seasoned professionals. Even more applaud worthy is HEAL’s efforts to stay associated with Indian health writers on a frequent basis and devise and implement multiple tools to continue build their capacity in an effective manner. It has been a wonderful learning experience to be associated with HEAL and this unique platform. I hope to continue my association with the health media conventions. 4 Message from the Team Dhananjay Kumar, As India is moving towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Founder Member HEAL FOUNDATION has emerged as a fulcrum in India's quest for Health and Wellness. The contribution of HF towards capacity building for information dissemination- communication and updating of health knowledge has been huge. As a health writer of over two decades in Delhi NCR and being associated with HEAL Foundation from the word go, I can vouch for its huge and effective health advocacy campaigns. It picked up Ayushman Bharat, globally the biggest health protection scheme, in right earnest and disseminated it as the game changer initiative among people at large. HEAL Foundation has been aggregating top stakeholders i.e. health writers, specialist doctors, health scientists, social scientists, developmental agencies et al on one platform for meaningful outcomes for firming up equitable, accessible and quality healthcare ecosystem. And in all this, patients have been centre of all of its activities. Its campaign to stem the tide of fake health news which are doing huge harm to genuine healthcare in the country, is really laudable. HEAL FOUNDATION's health writers' convention is unique in India. It is the only health writers' congregation. For pretty long time, it has been an annual event attracting top health writers from all across the country. In the convention, health writers and bloggers get the rare opportunity to converse with top health resource persons and equip them with accurate health information. The convention is crucial because training of health writers is the most important component in creating health and wellness ecosystem.
