The sale features 100 lots spanning a wide variety of styles and materials from the beginning of 20th century until the present day; estimates range from £1,000 to £300,000. The Heart of the Rose and The White Rose and the Red Rose (estimate: £200,000-300,000 for each panel), a pair of painted and jewelled gesso panels by Scottish artist Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933), were first displayed in the Rose Boudoir at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin, 1902. The Rose Boudoir, the result of a collaboration between Margaret and her husband Charles Rennie Mackintosh, defined a moment of consummate refinement in the evolution of the couple’s oeuvre and these panels played a pivotal role. Remaining strongly representative of the Glasgow avant-garde, they illustrate the rose theme in a lyrical, symbolist manner in a subtle evocation of maternal and sensual love. -

In a century that was dominated by science and technology, the wide-ranging artwork of Michael Ayrton (1921-75) is truly a tribute to the enduring power of Greek myth. Theorists often discuss the link between myth and creativity, but rarely does one see this connection manifested so provocatively over the course of an artist’s career. Fittingly, this British sculptor, painter, author, filmmaker, and maze designer was inspired by the story of the archetypal craftsman DaedalusвЂ―father of Icarus and maker of the labyrinth that imprisoned the MinotaurвЂ―and produced over 800 works that in turn enhance the myth’s significance. Highlighting the interaction between myth and artist, word and image, Jacob Nyenhuis here presents a catalogue of these works, one that will enlighten Ayrton’s British following while introducing him to an American audience.A nonconformist who challenged Picasso’s reign over the art world, Ayrton found in Daedalus a richly complex story of captivity and escape, ingenuity and creativity, flight and fall, success and failure. Ayrton’s own journey into the labyrinth set him on a torturous path through life and into the psyche: he came to identify himself not only with the craftsman but also with the Minotaur, representative of the bestial nature hidden within all of us. He ultimately created a new visual syntax that expanded the meaning of the labyrinth in disturbing ways for the twentieth century. -

Inventing the Modern World: TEXT PANELS Revival and (Re)invention At the 19th-century world’s fairs, many of the manufacturers’ stands were filled with objects laden with historical associations. A fascination with archaeology of the ancient world as well as popular interest in the art and literature of the Middle Ages and pre-Revolutionary France spawned imaginative revival styles, such as Renaissance, Gothic, and Rococo. Each style was imbued with cultural meaning and was often used in America to instill a European legitimacy on the young country’s artistic heritage. Objects in revival styles demonstrated the relevance of motifs and forms from the past on the decorative arts of the present. The succession of revivals also coincided with advancements in machine production, thus uniting the past with modern industry. Decorative arts were now more accessible and affordable, displaying the most current manufacturing methods, and consumers benefited from a greater variety of goods. Avant-garde processes of the time were often displayed through historical patterns and styles, such as Rococo swirls in cast-iron designs by Thomas Jeckyll and Thomas Warren and classically shaped electroplated metals by Elkington & Co. and Ferdinand Barbedienne Foundry. Revivalism became the platform for debuting inventive and progressive technologies that contributed to an increasingly modern world. Historicism: Imitation and Cunning Reproductions Artists who made objects in historicist styles for the world’s fairs sought to obtain the highest level of craftsmanship; many borrowed literally from the past and implemented or re-created ancient techniques. Some objects were so exact in their reproduction that they invited comparisons to originals. -

The total sale estimate for the 18 works offered from the collection is $1.9-2.7 million. No sculptor has captured the spirit of the Roaring Twenties as perfectly as Demetre Chiparus with his spectacular sculptures in decorated bronze and carved ivory. Inspired by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and Paul Poiret’s orientalist fashions, Chiparus conceived striking, dramatically poised representations of dancers that provide a compelling evocation of the exciting revues that electrified Paris theatre and music hall around the time of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. The splendid private collection of eighteen lots presented in the sale has been carefully assembled over many years and includes rare and fabulous examples of Chiparus’s artistry, notably his lotus-position figure of `Civa’ (estimate: $250,000-350,000) and the group compositions `Les Girls’ (estimate: $90,000-120,000) and `Ballets Russes’ (estimate: $200,000-300,000). A further highlight by Chiparus is the exceedingly rare sculpture of the `Leotard Dancer’ (estimate $120,000-180,000). Claire J.R. Colinet is represented at his most extravagant by the exotic `Ankara’ dancer’ (estimate: $140,000- 180,000) a consummate expression of this inspired sculptor’s distinctive style.
