JANUARY 10, 2021 – THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD “YOU WILL DRAW WATER JOYFULLY FROM THE SPRINGS OF SALVATION.” Isaiah 12

Today, the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord . This celebration puts the finishing touch on the mystery and reminds us of our own Baptism. The of Mark briefly records that the people where filled with expectation as they prepared their hearts for the promised Messiah. The Baptism of Jesus reveals that he is the desired Savior. Heaven is opened, and the descends upon Jesus in the form of a dove. At the same moment, the crowds hear the voice of the Father affirming that Jesus is the beloved and pleasing Son. This dramatic revelation shows that in our own Baptism we become the sons and daughters of . The grace of our Baptism also invites us to participate in the mission of Jesus Christ to boldly announce and proclaim the Good News of salvation. May our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord always encourage us to actively and joyfully respond to the powerful graces of our own Baptism, our rebirth, blessing and filling with the divine love of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. May God – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – abundantly bless you and your families in these coming weeks! In Christ, Fr. Ted Prentice, Pastor

LITURGICAL SEASONS AND ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER Throughout the year, you may have noticed how our church’s adornments and hangings change as the liturgical seasons flow one to the other. The vestments Father wears revolve their colors as we circle the year, moving from Advent and Christmas to ordinary time into Lent, the Season and on through ordinary time again. The colors and trimmings are timeless, woven through our church’s long history, steeped in symbolism and meaning. Keeping the altar cloths, linens, and hangings up-to-date, clean and pressed takes planning, time, and is no small expense. The task has been undertaken by the Altar Guild who organizes parishioners looking for an opportunity to give back to the church. Also, since the Altar Guild was not able to hold fundraisers this year, they are hoping to catch up once COVID is under control. Captured here are photos of Altar Guild and church members decking our beloved sanctuary with the appropriate accoutrements for the Christmas season.  To offer your assistance or to contact the Altar Guild, call Marge McDevitt, president, at 503-242-9428 or email [email protected]  If you would like to assist the Altar Guild in purchasing new linens and banners, please make a check out to St. Joseph the Worker Altar Guild or CLICK HERE FOR ONLINE GIVING. Select, Altar Guild. Above: Parishioners Lorenzo, his son , and Denise Thornton adjust seasonal banners.  To learn more about the liturgical calendar, click here. An easy to understand, pictorial view of the Liturgical Calendar with the seasonal vestment colors is hanging on the narthex wall by the south entrance door, or view it here. Below: Jodie Rossi, who purchases, arranges, and places our flowers each week, and her son Michael examine the Christmas arrangements. During the pandemic, finding fresh, unblemished flowers at a reasonable price has been a challenge.
