RANT, O Almighty God, that as thy blessed Son Jesus Christ at his first advent didst come Gto seek and to save that which was lost; so at his second and glorious appearing he may find in us the fruits of the redemption which he wrought, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. GOD, by whose word all things are sanctified, pour forth Thy blessing upon this wreath, and O grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and may receive from Thee abundant graces. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. ¶ All remain standing and sing the following, during which one Advent candle is lighted.

(1) O come, O come, Emmanuel, (2) O come, thou Wisdom from on high, and ransom captive Israel, who orderest all things mightily; that mourns in lonely exile here to us the path of knowledge show, until the Son of God appear. and teach us in her ways to go. ANTE-COMMUNION

THE COLLECT FOR PURITY LMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no Asecrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE SUMMARY OF THE LAW Minister. Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith. HOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy Tmind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Celebrant: Let us pray.

LMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon Aus the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.

WE no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the Olaw. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

The Word of the Lord. Answer. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel ...... St. Matthew 21:1-13

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St. Matthew. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord. OW when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, Nthen Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and im- mediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Bless- ed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.” And Jesus entered the and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Receiving Holy Communion at St. Mark's Church - Visitors who are baptized and already admitted to Communion in their own churches are invited to receive the Sacrament in faith, repentance and charity. To receive a Blessing, non-communicants are invited to kneel at the rail and cross their arms over their breast. Today is the First Sunday in Advent, a penitential season preceeding the Nativity of Christ and the Christmas season in the Church. We invite you to keep a sober-minded, prayerful, and holy Advent season. Parents might consider how to use the customs and traditions of this season to teach their children to prepare themselves to receive Jesus. All are encouraged to distrupt their daily routines in an effort to become spiritually prepared for the Feast of Christ's Nativity, for the reception of Jesus into our lives now, and also for his future return in glory. Please speak with your pastor for counsel, ideas, or encouragement. You are also strongly encouraged to make plans to attend the celebration of Holy Communion either on Christmas Eve (10:00 pm) or on Christmas Day (Sunday at 10:00 am). The Exhortation. Because this is the First Sunday in Advent, the Exhortation will be read following the Prayer for the Church (you may follow along by turning to page 94 in the pew prayerbook). A Booklet entitled "Advent Wreath Prayers" is available in the narthex or Cranmer Hall. This booklet has a suggested order of prayers to be said daily in the home during Advent. It also includes commentary on the Collects in Advent. An Advent Appeal: The Reformed Episcopal Missionary Diocese of Cuba. This Advent we are joining with other REC parishes across in the country in asking you to consider a special gift in support of the REC in Cuba. Cubans have been hit particularly hard by COVID and our clergy down there need our support. Prices on basic goods have sky-rocketed and many staples are nearly impossible to obtain. Our support will provide critical help to Cuban Christians during this time of extreme need. Please consider making a special gift by sending a check to St. Mark's with "Cuba Mission" in the memo line. Our goal is to raise $2,000 to contribute to this worthy cause. A brochure with more information is availabe in the narthex. The Sermon Hymn #312 The Lord Will Come and Not be Slow ...... (York)

At the Presentation of Alms (Tithes)

The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below, Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH LMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, Aand supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian rulers, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those, who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

The People are invited to stand to hear,

An Exhortation ...... page 94-95 in the pew edition of The Book of Common Prayer

¶ At the time of the celebration of the Communion, the Priest may say this Exhortation. And Note, that the Exhortation shall be said on the First Sunday in Advent, the First Sunday in , and Trinity Sunday.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Invitation, and Absolution E who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your Yneighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all Amen; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of Asins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ¶ Then shall the Presbyter say, Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him. Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you (St. Matthew 11:28). So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (St. John 3:16). Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). Hear also what Saint John saith. If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation for our sins (1 St. John 2:1, 2). Sursum Corda Lift up your hearts. Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. Answer. It is meet and right so to do.

¶ Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant says,

T is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give Ithanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. ¶ Then shall be said the Proper Preface, according to the time, if there be any specially appointed.

HEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and Tmagnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Consecration: Institution, Oblation, Invocation LL glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, Adidst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again: For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins; Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. ¶ Then shall be said the Oblation.

HEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly Wbeloved Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same.

¶ Then shall be said the Invocation. ND we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thine almighty Agoodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. ND we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of Apraise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

UR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will Obe done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. E do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own Wrighteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

¶ Then all may join in singing the Agnus Dei, as follows.

¶ The Celebrant shall receive the Sacrament in both kinds and then proceed to deliver the same to the and other clergy (if any be present) and after that to the People, all devoutly kneeling. When he delivers the Bread and the Cup, he shall say,

The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee, and feed on him in thy heart by faith, with thanksgiving.
