Section Four – Economic Activity

Tables 13 to 15 highlight the number of working age people across Houston, Crosslee and Linwood by their level of economic activity, industry and occupation in the week leading up to the 2011 Census. Should you seek the most up to date picture, details can be found at http://www.nomisweb.co.uk/.

The Census defines Economic Activity as “whether or not a person aged 16 and over was working or looking for work in the week before census. Rather than a simple indicator of whether or not someone was currently in employment, it provides a measure of whether or not a person was an active participant in the labour market.”1

Within Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, over 14% of people aged 16 to 74 were in part- time employment compared to the Renfrewshire average of 13.22%. However, there was a smaller proportion of people in the ward in full-time employment than there was throughout Renfrewshire. A higher proportion of people throughout Houston, Crosslee and Linwood were self-employed or retired, while there was a lower rate of unemployment within the ward than there was throughout Renfrewshire. A similar proportion of people in the ward are economically active compared with the whole of Renfrewshire; there are more men in full-time employment than women, while more women are in part-time employment or are looking after the family at home.

Almost 81% of people in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood do not have any limitations on their day-to-day activities, which is higher than the figure for Renfrewshire. Table 26 shows that there is a lower percentage of people in the ward that have limitations on their day-to- day activities compared with the total Renfrewshire population.

Ward % Renfrewshire % All people 15,859 174,908 Day-to-day activities limited a lot 1,497 9.44% 18,729 10.71% Day-to-day activities limited a little 1,521 9.59% 17,940 10.26% Day-to-day activities not limited 12,841 80.97% 138,239 79.04% Table 26: Long-term health problem or disability of all people in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood

Continuing on from Table 26, it is highlighted that 71.14% of people in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood do not suffer from any long-term health conditions, compared to 68.92% of the Renfrewshire total. Therefore it can be viewed that a person from Houston, Crosslee and Linwood is less likely to suffer from the long-term health conditions noted in Table 27, compared to the Renfrewshire average.

Ward % Renfrewshire % All people 15,859 174,908 No condition 11,282 71.14% 120,555 68.92% One or more conditions 4,577 28.86% 54,353 31.08% Deafness or partial hearing loss 1,048 6.61% 11,987 6.85% Blindness or partial sight loss 323 2.04% 4,231 2.42% Learning disability 75 0.47% 946 0.54% Learning difficulty 257 1.62% 3,417 1.95% Developmental disorder 99 0.62% 1,045 0.60% Physical disability 1,067 6.73% 12,622 7.22% Mental health condition 610 3.85% 9,161 5.24% Other condition 2,861 18.04% 33,571 19.19% 5 Table 27: Long-term health conditions of all people in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood

Table 28 shows that the overall provision of unpaid care in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood is similar to the whole of Renfrewshire, although there is a slightly higher proportion of people providing 50 or more hours of care than the rest of Renfrewshire.

Ward % Renfrewshire % All people 15,859 174,908 Provides no unpaid care 14,259 89.91% 157,149 89.85% Provides 1 to 19 hours unpaid care a week 863 5.44% 9,897 5.66% Provides 20 to 34 hours unpaid care a week 150 0.95% 1,729 0.99% Provides 35 to 49 hours unpaid care a week 132 0.83% 1,513 0.87% Provides 50 or more hours unpaid care a week 455 2.87% 4,620 2.64% Table 28: Provision of unpaid care by all people in Houston, Crosslee and Linwood

5 People with more than one condition are counted separately for each condition but once only in the 'All people' and 'One or more conditions' categories.
