Dear WSLL Families and Members, Thank you all for contributing to another fantastic season of baseball in West Springfield. WSLL was home to nearly 700 ball players this year. We were graced with good weather, competitive balance at every division, zero preventable injuries, and immeasurable support from all of you. WSLL continues to be a unique organization and place where kids can play and families can come together in our busy and transient community. I hope that you’ve found we’ve appropriately balanced competition and fun, and that you and your kids enjoyed the great game of baseball.
This year, while our overall registration numbers were comparable to the previous few seasons, we got a little WSLL President Mike Warbel smaller in the Majors division by contracting two teams. This was hectic for some, but by having fewer teams at the Majors level, it will hopefully allow us to focus on better player-development at our lower levels and more competitive play at that highest level in future seasons. Thanks to balance across divisions, we had several teams go home with trophies this year, either for the regular season or in-house tournaments. In the post-season, one of our 8-10 year-old teams won the District 9 Fun Tournament. We had teams compete in the finals of each division of the district all-star tournaments, and our 10/11 American All-Stars were District Champs. That 10/11 American team went on to the Final Four in the State. Bravo!
I hope this book holds some treasured moments for each of you, and that you enjoy reliving the 2019 season. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you all for your help and support of our League. We could not do this without such strong parent support. Also, thank you to our coaches and umpires for your tireless work and dedication. Finally, thank you for entrusting us with your children. I hope they made memories and learned good life lessons. See you all back at Byron next year!

47 West Springfield Little League 2019 Thanks to Our WSLL Umpires! This year was a banner year for our growing umpire program, now one of the largest in Virginia. Applying user-friendly on- line rule training, activity-based, hands-on rule application and game management training, our nearly 80-member umpire corps, including over 50 youth umpires, covered nearly 280 games, averaging over 3 umpires per game, attracting the attention of other leagues, who asked our help in covering their games. Led by our dedicated veteran umpires, an emerging corps of new leaders, and some remarkable parent-child umpire teams, we were especially proud of our sizable youth corps and growing cadre of youth leaders. Through the umpiring program, our youth umpires have extended their “Byron Avenue Experience,” and experienced the same camaraderie, team spirit, and fun they and their families have grown used to – all while performing a service to the league, and growing as young adults. Their enthusiasm and development have in turn enhanced the Byron Avenue Experience for the rest of us and we are not surprised that many of our youth umpires are already asking, “when does Fall Ball start?” Special congratulations to Thayer Winingham, Youth Umpire of the Year (his award predecessor now umpires in MLB), and a number of other youths and adults who really came through for the league this year.

Congratulations to Logan Driscoll on being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the MLB draft. Logan last played in WSLL in 2010. He played on the 2012 Lake Braddock State Championship team and was a coach on this year’s team. Logan is a junior at George Mason University and is an outstanding hitter and catcher.
