High School/College Relations Council Letter from the President

Dear High School Counselors,

The Arizona High School/College Relations Council (AZHSCRC) was formed in 1956 to respond more effectively to the needs of students, high schools, and Arizona colleges and universities. AZHSCRC is establishing working relationships with two local organizations that serve guidance counselors, the Rocky Mountain Association for College Admissions Counseling (RMACAC) and the Arizona School Counselors Association (AzSCA). Both of these organizations are about equity and access to all students. By establishing working partnerships with both of these organizations AZHSCRC will be able to provide more quality professional development to Arizona high school counselors and the students and families they work with. The council is looking forward to the enhanced services we will be able to provide to high school counselors and the colleges and universities in the coming years.

The Council focuses in two areas to implement our mission statement, the High School Counselor Conference and the Fall Visitation Program. The High School Counselor Conference is created based on the high school counselors’ input regarding their needs in the ever-changing climate in education today.

Once again, AZHSCRC is hosting one free state-wide conference in 2010. This year we are expanding the conference to include the university and community college updates, along with break-out sessions. The college browse will continue throughout the conference and close at the end of the day. AZHSCRC executive board has been working hard on creating a professional development opportunity that will enhance your knowledge and benefit the students you serve. We do not intend to abandon the original format forever but rather try something new and generate ideas for the future. Funding is still playing a major role in allowing the council to offer three regional conferences. We continue to explore all the options, including sponsorships and partnerships with organizations that can assist us financially.

Your feedback drives the creation of our conferences and visitation program. Please take a moment at the end of your breakout sessions to complete the short conference evaluation. You are also invited to be an active participant in the Council. The Executive Board holds general meetings for the member institutions and high school counselors to be included in the Council’s decision making process. We welcome you to attend and have your voice be heard. Meeting dates are published on the AZHSCRC website: http://azhscrchome.org.

We hope that you find the Guide to Member Institutions to be a useful tool. The guide is updated yearly to help counselors quickly find pertinent information about the regionally-accredited higher education institutions in the state of Arizona. This guide can also be found on the AZHSCRC website. We hope that this information will assist you in working with students and parents as they explore the diverse opportunities for post-secondary education here in Arizona.

Have a safe and wonderful school year!

How to Beat the High Cost of College!

As a Guidance Counselor, you wear a lot of different hats. You do all that you can to help prepare your students for college. You also help parents prepare for the FAFSA and the financial aid process. But helping parents prepare for the financial burden that a college education brings is not within your realm of expertise. Unfortunately, finances are an important consideration for many families when making college decisions and it’s heartbreaking when an amazing student can’t attend college because of finances.

At the HEFAR Group, we specialize in helping to make a college education affordable for everyone. We are the leading authority on college funding and we are a valuable resource to you as a counselor. The HEFAR Group employs 2 of only 4 Certified College Planning Specialists in the state of Arizona and all of our college funding advisors are highly trained and meet rigorous certification requirements by the National Institute of Certified College Planners. We educate families, helping them understand the financial aid system so they can qualify for more money in financial aid and fund their student’s college education without going broke!

Include our presentation, How to Beat the High Cost of College!, at your college/financial aid night so you can help your families learn the facts and the secrets of the financial aid system. Learn to:

• Lower the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and qualify for more free financial aid. • Send students to an expensive private school or out-of-State school for the same cost as a public, in-State school. • Maximize potential for free money to pay for college by understanding scholarships, grants, income and asset planning, and the financial aid forms. • Analyze colleges to determine which schools will offer the best financial aid packages to their family. • Double, or even triple their financial aid award package. • Complete the financial aid forms accurately and on-time to ensure maximum aid • Attend college for free, if the family has a zero EFC.

The HEFAR Group, a division of San Tan Financial, is a not-for-profit company. We offer our college funding services completely FREE. As a counselor, we can help you better prepare your families for the college financial aid process. Simply call us directly at 480-776-1699 to schedule our presentation at your next event.

Christopher Ordway, MBA, CCPS is one of only 4 Certified College Planning Specialists in Arizona. He is the author of Reveal the Rockefeller Within!, and the owner of San Tan Financial and The HEFAR Group, a not-for-profit college planning company in Phoenix. He has been a college funding advisor for nearly a decade and in that time he has experience working with literally thousands of families, helping them to qualify for more money in financial aid.

$$ FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES $$

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) qualifies students for Federal Aid and is based on need. Financial Aid is given in the following forms: Loans (money that is borrowed and must be paid back), Grants (money awarded that does not need to be paid back) and Work Study

(money paid to student for work done on campus).

Students can fill out the FAFSA starting January 1st of their senior year. Aid is first come first serve. The priority deadline for all colleges and universities varies; please check each individual institution for these dates.

GENERAL ADMISSION INFORMATION

In the past few years, an admission criterion for each of the public universities has changed. Please refer to each institution’s information page for specific information on admissions, including: GPA, test scores, class competencies, etc.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

A transfer student is a student who has completed a minimum of 24 transferable semester hours. A minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA is required for resident transfer students. Some academic programs require a higher GPA for admission to professional program status. Transfer students must also meet high school competency requirements. Students 22 years of age or older at the time of enrollment and students who have an Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC), or an associate’s or higher degree from an accredited institution, need only meet the general aptitude requirements.

ARIZONA GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM (AGEC)

Arizona public community colleges and universities have agreed upon a common structure for a general education curriculum. This curriculum provides students attending any Arizona public community college with the opportunity to build a general education curriculum that is transferable upon completion without loss of credit to another Arizona public community college or university.

Completion of the AGEC will fulfill lower division general education requirements at all Arizona public community colleges and universities and will be fully applicable to the baccalaureate degree.

The goal is to create for community college students clear and secure transfer pathways - different from, but parallel to the pathways followed by native university students - that will allow them to maximize their experience at the community college, to incorporate community college credits or degrees efficiently into university graduation requirements, and to complete baccalaureate majors in the minimum number of required credits.

COURSE APPLICABILITY SYSTEM (CAS) http://az.transfer.org/cas/CASHome.html CAS provides information on how specific coursework will transfer and apply towards a degree at a CAS institution.

TRADITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Many of the Colleges and Universities have scholarships and/or tuition waivers for students who rank in the top percent of their class. For specific information on which institutions offer merit based scholarships/waivers please refer to their section on scholarships. You may also contact their scholarship office at the number provided on the same page.

SCHOLARSHIP SEARCHES

Students are encouraged to look for outside scholarships while in high school. There are many free scholarship search engines on the internet to help students find scholarships they would be eligible for. Students can also contact any familial affiliations to see if there are scholarships available to them. The sites listed below are some popular search engines.
