Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Gators make it back-to-back titles; Florida becomes fourth men’s program to win consecutive crowns: Florida became just the fourth diff erent men’s program in NCAA history to claim back-to-back NCAA indoor championships, scoring 52 total team points to capture the 2011 national crown March 12 at Gilliam Indoor Track Sta- dium on the campus of Texas A&M. The Gators join Arkansas, Kansas and UTEP as the only men’s programs in NCAA history to win NCAA indoor championships in consecutive years. Florida is the fi rst team to accomplish the feat since Arkansas did so in 2005 and 2006. The Gators totaled 52 points to defeat second-place Texas A&M by 12 points. The Aggies scored 40 points, while BYU was third with 34 points. Fourth-place LSU (31) and fi fth-place Florida State (30) rounded out the men’s top fi ve. It marked the 25th national title in Florida school history. “This year was special because we came in as big favorites, had some adversity, but we overcame it and we’re national champions again,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “It was a total-team eff ort. We’re a team and a family, and we look after each other. We had a tough day yesterday, but the thing is that champions respond to adversity. I challenged our team to be who we are and do the things that we do well. They did that and I’m very proud of them.” Florida was aided by individual national championships from junior jumper Will Claye in the men’s triple jump and sophomore sprinter Jeff Demps in the men’s 60-meter dash. -
Sacramento - July 14-23
2000 Sacramento - July 14-23 The location of the Trials was Sacramento State University, in Hornet Stadium, which was redeveloped prior to the Trials – thanks in part to a $1.1m donation by local property developer Alex Spanos – enabling a maximum crowd of 23,000 to attend. Like most American stadia it was open to the elements, which meant that sprint events were detrimentally affected by the wind, while a lack of cover gave the crowd the opportunity to be tenderized by the sun. The flat stands meant that the 2 outside lanes were virtually impossible to see by those not seated in the first few rows, and policing was required to prevent peoples’ view from being blocked. Other than these surmountable problems, the meeting was the usual competitive hotbed of triumph and tragedy, success and failure. 100 Meters - July 15, 18.00 Hr (-1.7w) 1. 4. Young Investigator Research Article ANTHROPOMETRIC
©Journal of Sports Science and Medicine (2005) 4, 608-616 http://www.jssm.org Young investigator Research article ANTHROPOMETRIC COMPARISON OF WORLD-CLASS SPRINTERS AND NORMAL POPULATIONS Niels Uth Department of Sport Science, University of Aarhus, Aarhus N, Denmark Received: 30 May 2005 / Accepted: 25 August 2005 / Published (online): 01 December 2005 ABSTRACT The present study compared the anthropometry of sprinters and people belonging to the normal population. The height and body mass (BM) distribution of sprinters (42 men and 44 women) were statistically compared to the distributions of American and Danish normal populations. The main results showed that there was significantly less BM and height variability (measured as standard deviation) among male sprinters than among the normal male population (US and Danish), while female sprinters showed less BM variability than the US and Danish normal female populations. On average the American normal population was shorter than the sprinters. There was no height difference between the sprinters and the Danish normal population. All female groups had similar height variability. Both male and female sprinters had lower body mass index (BMI) than the normal populations. It is likely that there is no single optimal height for sprinters, but instead there is an optimum range that differs for males and females. This range in height appears to exclude people who are very tall or very short in stature. Sprinters are generally lighter in BM than normal populations. Also, the BM variation among sprinters is less than the variation among normal populations. These anthropometric characteristics typical of sprinters might be explained, in part, by the influence the anthropometric characteristics have on relative muscle strength and step length. -
