Op de 100m vrije slag zwom zij in de eerste halve finale naar de vierde tijd (53.42). Omdat in de tweede halve finale drie dames sneller waren gaat zij als zevende naar de laatste acht. 'Net door. Dit was geen goede tijd. Maar ik zit er bij, dus heb ik een kans!' was haar eerste reactie. In de series was ‘Kromo’ ogenschijnlijk gemakkelijk naar 53.43 gezwommen, dus was er het vertrouwen dat het in de nachtelijke uren sneller zou gaan. De medaillefavorieten zetten wel allemaal een tandje bij. Cate Campbell (25.33 bij het keerpunt) leek daarbij in de laatste 25 meter niet eens voluit te gaan. Zij verbeterde haar in de serie gevestigde Olympische record (52.78) met 0,07. Zij werd in de laatste meters wel ingelopen door de jonge en vooral onbevangen Canadese Penny Oleksiak, die zich als een gevaarlijk outsider meldde en met 52.72 een nieuw wereldrecord voor junioren zwom. Simone Manuel, USA (53.11), Sarah Sjöström (53..16) en wereldkampioene Bronte Campbell (53.29) volgden in het spoor van het leidende duo. Ook Jeanette Ottesen, de wereldkampioen van 2011, was met 53.35 nog sneller dan de Olympisch kampioene van 2012. Even na het middaguur was voor Femke Heemskerk het Olympisch toernooi voorbij. Dat de Nederlandse recordhoudster (52.69 in april 2015) alle grip op het water verloren heeft, werd al pijnlijk duidelijk in de estafette. Een twintigste plaats in 54.63 in de series. Meer was niet mogelijk. Dat de estafetteploeg de finale niet zou halen op de 4x200 meter vrije slag werd al snel duidelijk. De mentaal aangeslagen Marrit Steenbergen (2.00.80), Esmee Vermeulen (1.59.06), Andrea Kneppers (1.59.86) en Robin Neumann (1.59.01) kwamen als zevende binnen in de eerste van de twee series. Dat gegeven en de tijd van 7.58.72 bood geen enkel uitzicht op een hoge klassering. Wanneer de zwemsters alleen al hun persoonlijke records hadden benaderd of geëvenaard (opgeteld 7.52.25), was de finale gehaald. Daarvoor was 7.53.43 nodig. Ook de vijfde Olympische finale avond stond stijf van de opwinding. De zege van Kyle Chambers (18) op de 100 vrij (47.58) en het zilver van Pieter Timmers uit België (47.80) op dit nummer (titelverdediger Adrian, USA brons met 47.85 en 4 Condorelli CAN 47.88), het goud voor de Spaanse Mireia Belmonte op de 200 vlinder (0,03 voor de Australische Groves en de overwinning vanuit baan 8 van Balandin uit Kazakhstan op de 200 school waren absoluut niet verwacht. En de 4x200 vrij? Gewonnen door de USA (7.43.03), gevolgd door Australië (7.44.87) en Canada (7.45.39). Zweden was met de vijfde plaats (7.50.26) de beste van de drie Europese finalisten. Ik stond vandaag op keerpunt 5, met twee keer Ranomi Kromowidjojo die gelukkig doorgaat naar de finale. In het interview voor de krant had ik gezegd dat ik zelfs Ranomi zou diskwalificeren als ze het fout zou doen, maar op de vrije slag zou ik niet weten wat ze fout kan doen. Op mijn baan kwam ook Michael Phelps voorbij, en ik moet toegeven dat ik wel even een moment van kippenvel had, ook al is hij ook maar zwemmer die zijn race zwemt (hoewel ...). Erik van Heijningen, KNZB-voorzitter: Oranje bij de vuilnisbak omdat de resultaten tot nu tegenvallen? Omdat er "donkere wolken boven ons hangen"? Natuurlijk niet. Ik ben blij te zien hoe het hele team, sporters en staf gezamenlijk, zich blijft focussen, met scherp zicht. We zijn halverwege. We laten ons niet klein maken. Iedere dag zijn er verrassingen. Wie zou na de hf denken dat Dmitry Balandin uit KAZ de 200m schoolslag zou winnen? Alexander Popov ook niet. Wie zag de grote successen van Canada aankomen? Ze zijn zelf ook blij verrast. De supporters juichen. Kortom, sta op als je voor Holland bent. Er moet hard, keihard gezwommen worden door Ranomi op de 100m vrije slag vandaag, want niet alleen Cate Campbell AUS steekt in supervorm. Zie de tijden en verschillen. The Belgian Olympic Committee was formed three years later – a year af- ter Belgium, thanks to the efforts of King Leopold II, had played host to the prestigious Olympic Congress.
