It is Tabitha’s second award in a month after she won the improving patient experience category at Mid Essex Hospitals’ Outstanding Care and Service Awards.

“The award ceremony was beautiful and I was surprised I won,” said Tabitha, who joined the Trust eighteen months ago. “I wasn’t prepared for it because there were so many wonderful people there. Everyone there deserved to win. “It was such an honour to meet so many inspirational people and hear their stories. People don’t tend to think about this side of midwifery and the fact anyone even thought to nominate me is really lovely. “It’s really nice to know that the work I’ve done here has made a difference to people, because that’s why I do it. Hundreds of people have already taken part in a consultation which gives residents the chance to have their say on how the future priorities of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) are delivered. The consultation runs until Friday 13 December and sets out the priorities for ECFRS by asking residents to agree or disagree on what they feel is a priority, as well as give the opportunity to share their opinions on the focus of the fire and rescue service. The questions asked in the consultation include points around road safety, home visits, staff training and keeping vulnerable people safe. All of the priorities prepare the Service for a future with reductions in incidents, an increased focus on prevention and a commitment to become financially sustainable as reductions in funding continue. Chief Fire Officer/ Chief Executive Jo Turton said: "Our Service recognises the voices of our residents are paramount in creating a transparent and effective fire and rescue service. Backyard Poultry at risk from Avian Influenza

For those of us that keep chickens and other birds, winter in the UK always puts our birds at a heightened risk of contracting AIA due to migrating birds and the ability of the virus to survive for prolonged periods of time in the environment, particularly in low temperatures.

The first outbreak this season of low pathogenic avian flu of the H5 strain was confirmed at a commercial chicken farm in Mid Suffolk on the 10 December. The risk to public health from the virus is very low and the Food Standards Agency stated that bird flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers. Thoroughly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.

How to recognise Avian Influenza in your poultry

Low Pathogenic AI: • reduced food and water intake • lethargy • respiratory signs, conjunctivitis, nasal discharge • blue discolouration of the comb and wattle (rare) and • temporary diarrhoea. • in younger birds, the signs are more severe. Laying birds If the public find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or show a reduction in egg production combined with other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, they should deformed, depigmented, thin-shelled eggs and a reduced report them to the Defra helpline on: 03459 33 55 77. fertilisation rate. • Infection rate is high, but the mortality rate is low. Birds Jürgen Theinert BVSc BSc MRCVS recover within 3 weeks without returning to their previous Edgewood Veterinary Group performance level.

High Pathogenic AI: • Sudden deaths • Swelling of the head, eyelids, comb, wattles and hocks • Purple discolouration of the wattles, comb and legs • Gasping for air (difficulty breathing) • Coughing, sneezing and/or nasal discharge • Stumbling or falling

How to protect your backyard poultry from AI:

Maintain good levels of biosecurity: Maintaining good levels of hygiene and regularly disinfecting hard surfaces; Changing shoes before entering/leaving to avoid transferring faeces in/out of the poultry enclosure; Minimising contact with wildlife by humanely controlling rodents and deterring wild birds. Contact with wild birds can be minimised by placing food and water in an enclosed area such as the coop, and preventing poultry from accessing ponds/standing water frequented by wild bird populations, for example by erecting temporary fencing; Where possible, keeping birds of different poultry species separate (e.g. ducks and geese should be separate from chickens).

What should I do if I suspect avian influenza?

Avian influenza is a notifiable disease. If it is suspected, it must be reported immediately:

HOSPICE CHARITY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR DANBURY SOCIAL GROUP

The J’s Hospice is appealing for volunteers to help at its popular ‘Inspire!’ social group which meets on a Saturday afternoon seven times a year at Danbury Mission.

The J’s is part of the Havens Hospices charity and cares for young adults living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex.

Inspire! gives them a chance to get together and experience new activities while their families have some free time, knowing that their loved ones are safe and well cared for.

Amanda Pelham from The J’s, explained, “We couldn’t run our Inspire! group in Danbury without the support of our fantastic volunteers who help us bring smiles to the faces to the young adults that we care for.

“We’re looking for happy, enthusiastic people to either work directly with our patients or help the afternoon to run smoothly by helping on reception, running the activities and making refreshments. You don’t need any medical skills as our Care Team are always there to provide support - but it’s a great opportunity to get some valuable experience if you are training for a job in the care sector such as a nurse, carer or youth worker.“

Sushila Patel (pictured left) is a podiatrist and has been volunteering at Inspire! for three years. She said, “I am always amazed by how much thought goes into these days so that all the needs of the young adults attending are met. I find it rewarding to accompany one of them and ensure that they have a great day.”

If you are interested in being an Inspire! volunteer like Sushila, please visit www.havenshospices.org.uk/inspirevolunteer or call the Volunteer Team on 01702 426237 for more information.

14 Focus PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS V SUPPORTING THE HOMELESS

Going by the old adage, ‘Prevention is better than cure’, we at Housing Dilemmas CIC, work proactively to prevent another case of eviction or homelessness than allow a tenancy to be lost and then react to resolve it. Once a tenancy is lost and the household is made homeless, it becomes a lot more difficult to house the individual or household. Secondly, the repercussions of homelessness can be devasting, as it often leads to other socio-economic adversities, which affect both the individuals and the community as a whole.

Homelessness can lead to unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, rough sleeping, crime, lack of self-esteem, abject poverty, social exclusion, isolation, loneliness, depression, mental health, chronic health issues, malnutrition, vulnerability and the list goes on. Areas that are prevalent with homelessness and rough sleeping also affect businesses and property values as entrepreneurs and home buyers tend to look elsewhere; where their investments will yield good returns.

Most individuals and households facing homelessness would prefer help to come to them in time to prevent the eviction. Offering homeless individuals, blankets, duvets, hot meals and sleeping bags are very charitable and as such applaudable, but do they resolve any of the above socio-economic impacts?

Everyone needs a roof over their head. Sleeping outside at shopfronts, train stations, in sheds, under bridges and on the Peaches streets are no options regardless of whether it is wet, dry, warm or UNISEX HAIR SALON cold.

It was Peter Brown, the then Pub Landlord, that played a major role in the launch and the continued growth, supporting the Club with his wonderful, community spirit, for 7 years, until retiring last July.

The Club went on to start up ‘Learn to Play Bridge’ club, initially at the pub until its success meant it outgrew this venue and had to move to the village hall.

Also, in those years BFC ran brilliant ‘Murder Mystery’ nights, along with the new village tradition of ‘ The Spirit of Christmas’. All with Peters undying support.
