After finishing last season 11-4 overall and 7-4 in duals for a No. 28 final ranking, the Cardinal’s top tandem has been almost unbeatable in 2009-10. Klahn and Thacher enter the dual match season at 13-2 overall, and have already captured tournament titles at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and ITA National Indoor Championships. Klahn and Thacher pieced together a 10-match winning streak during the fall and are a serious threat to win the NCAA Doubles crown.
Pieces In Place This year’s club returns essentially its entire starting lineup from 2009, with the exception of Matt Bruch and Blake Muller. The extra year of experience for Stanford’s top four players should be of great value. Junior Alex Clayton, a two-time All-American, played primarily at the No. 1 spot last year and will remain at that position. Sophomore Bradley Klahn led Stanford in overall wins (35) and dual wins (20) last season and will play No. 2. ne of the nation’s top collegiate head coaches, John Whitlinger enters his sixth Oseason at the helm of the Stanford men’s tennis program. Since taking over the head coaching duties in 2005 from legendary skipper Dick Gould, Whitlinger has led Stanford to a 73-46 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances while four different players have earned All-America accolades during his tenure. However, Whitlinger’s contributions to the Cardinal men’s tennis program extend back more than 35 years, as enjoying success as an associate head coach and student-athlete. For 18 seasons from 1987-2004, Whitlinger served as the program’s associate head coach under Gould and helped guide Stanford to a 416-64 record while claim- ing nine NCAA championships. After a one-year hiatus from postseason play, Whitlinger has directed Stanford to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Following a second round showing two years ago, the Cardinal took the next step in 2009 and reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2006. Last year’s Stanford squad finished 20-6 overall and midway through the season earned the program’s first No. 1 national ranking since 2002. randon Coupe begins his third year as an assistant coach at Stanford. B During his time as an assistant coach on The Farm, Coupe has helped guide the Cardinal to a 41-31 record and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. Coupe joined the coaching staff following a six-year stint as the Head Professional at the Tiburon Peninsula Club, which he first joined in 2001. He was also a profes- sional coach from 2004-06 and the Tournament Director of the Esurance Tiburon International Tennis Challenger from 2003-04. From 1994-2003, Coupe played on the ATP Tour and participated in 14 Grand Slam events, including the 2002 U.S. Open where he was a quarterfinalist. Volunteer Assistant Coach Saint Mary’s (2005) 5th Season
.J. Whitlinger, son of men’s tennis head coach John Whitlinger, is now in his fifth Jseason as a volunteer assistant coach with the Stanford program. Whitlinger is currently an assistant pro at Fremont Hills Country Club in Palo Alto. A 2005 graduate of Saint Mary’s with a bachelor’s degree in politics, Whitlinger was a four-year letterwinner and tabbed an All-WCC doubles player during his career. He was also named team captain during his senior season and voted the team’s Most Inspirational Player as a sophomore and junior. J.J., which stands for John, Jr., attended Menlo-Atherton High School. Whitlinger was a four-time first-team All-Pacific Athletic League selection, two time league champion (singles as a senior and doubles as a freshman), four-time team MVP and three-year team captain. He also led his team to the Central Coast Section cham- pionships on two occasions. As a senior, Whitlinger earned all-conference honors in The Whitlingers have played together as a father-son doubles team and were football as a wide receiver and return specialist and was named his high school’s ranked as high as No. 3 in the country a few years ago.
