Widely used in landscape plantings, these versatile plants offer diverse foliage, color- ful fruit and attractive flowers. Viburnums are relatively pest-free, but in some parts of the US the viburnum leaf beetle can be a serious pest in both landscape and natural settings. Potential diseases include bacterial leaf spot and powdery mildew. INSECTS Viburnum Leaf Beetle, Pyrrhalta viburni, is a leaf-feeding insect native to Europe and Asia. In North America, the beetle became established around Ottawa, Canada in the 1970’s and was first detected in the United States in Maine in 1994 and in New York in 1996. It has since spread through much of the northeastern US (15). Reports of viburnum leaf beetle in the Midwest include Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois (1) and Washington and British Columbia, Canada in the Pacific Northwest (7). The beetle is host-specific and feeds only on Viburnum, but there are preferences within the genus (6). Species with thick leaves tend to be more resistant and feeding is more likely to occur on plants grown in the shade (17). Feeding by both larvae and adults causes tattered leaves and may result in extensive defoliation – repeated defoliations can kill the plant. Patterns of body size distribution are also often studied. The distribution of body size within species is looked at for suggestions of differential mating strategies or niche variation among ontogenetic development. Patterns are also examined among species to determine the effects of competition, environmental factors, and phylogenetic inertia. -

Management of the Viburnum Leaf Beetle at the Morris Arboretum Abstract Pyrrhalta viburni (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), or the viburnum leaf beetle (VLB), is an invasive pest on viburnums in North America, where native species of the plant have little natural resistance. Resistance can be conferred by leaf texture, leaf chemistry, or a wound response that crushes VLB eggs. The beetle does not immediately kill host plants, but repeated defoliation is fatal after several years. Because viburnum is a common forest and landscape plant in the eastern United States, VLB is a serious concern. The Morris Arboretum has a large collection of viburnums, including many native and non-native species. While VLB had already been observed in passing, this project included a thorough baseline survey of VLB damage throughout the Arboretum. Data were collected for the number of twigs infested with VLB, the number of cavities on each twig, and whether a wound response had been produced. -

[email protected] Abstract This paper presents a discussion on the taxonomy of weevils of the genus Anthonomus and presents diagnostic characters useful for the identification of adult and immature stages of the genus. In addition, I ran a search in the USDA’s AQAS database for interceptions of species of Anthonomus of quarantine importance that have been intercepted at United States ports of entry. In total, six species of quarantine importance have been intercepted: Anthonomus flavus, Anthonomus grandis, Anthonomus melanosticus, Anthonomus pomorum, Anthonomus rubi, and Anthonomus sisyphus. Photographs and information on the origin and hosts of these interceptions are included. Abstract: Copulatory linking of male and female genitalic structures in 11 Neotropical species of Chrysomelidae and one species of Megalopodidae was studied by freezing and then dissecting pairs of beetles in copula. In Megalopus armatus (Megalopodidae) the male has a long endophallus with complex membranous protuberances and a terminal flagellum that probably reaches the spermatheca. In the subfamily Eumolpinae the females have telescoping ovipositors through which the male endophalli pass, reaching to or near the mouth of the spermathe- cal duct. A long thin flagellum is probably inserted into the spermathecal duct. The male endophalli are braced inside the female using various structures, including two pairs of lateral appendages and apical appendages (both lateral pairs sclerotized in Colaspis sanjoseana and only the basal pair in Brachypnoea irazuensis), a pair of membranous swellings (in Metaxyonycha amasia), and apical microspicules on the endophallus (in Xanthonia). In the subfamily Galerucinae, males of Metrioidea and Diabrotica (tribe Galerucini) have relatively short endophalli ornamented with sclerotized hooks, spines and needles. In Metrioidea elongata the long needle-like endophallic spines of the male were erected inside the female and penetrated the wall of her bursa. In the tribe Alticini, the male endophallus is very short and does not enter the female in two species, Alagoasa gemmata and Walterianella sp. -

Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. The internal sac of P. maculicollis bears hand saw-like spines, which are arranged in a row. Healing wounds were found on the vagina of this species, whose females were collected in the field during a repro- ductive season. However, the number of the wounds is low in comparison to the number of the spines. -
