(2018). A Study on Lisbeth Salander’s Fear of Intimacy in Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University. Intimacy exists in human relationship. It happens between two individuals or more. However, intimacy is feared by some people. In literary works, fear of intimacy can be experienced by the character. This study discusses the fear of intimacy on Lisbeth Salander from a novel entitled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, written by Stieg Larsson. Lisbeth Salander, a pale, very skinny young woman who experts in internet hack culture but awkward in common social situation, is involved in a mystery disclosure. Salander traumatic experiences with other people result in her rejection towards relationship and human intimacy. The problem formulation is “How does Salander overcome her fear of intimacy?”. The objective of the study is to describe how Salander overcome her fear of intimacy using MacAdams’ theory. -
Book Review. Fall of Man in Wilmslow--The Death and Life of Alan Turing
Book Review. Fall of man in Wilmslow--The Death and life of Alan Turing. by David Lagercrantz Many creative writers and artists have been inspired by the life of AlanTuring. This has resulted in a number of plays, films, novels etc. of varying quality especially since the centenary year of 2012. Perhaps the best is the play/TV drama “Breaking the code” by Hugh Whitemore (1985) and starring Derek Jacobi as Turing. This is worth mentioning here as it is available for all to see on youtube. However, one of the best is this novel under review. It is a work of fiction although some of the characters other than Turing are real-life people. The main character is a fictitious policeman Detective Constable Leonard Corell, He works in Wilmslow Cheshire. He is called to a house where Alan Turing has just committed suicide. It soon became apparent to Corell that the authorities were taking a lot of interest in this case. Also, he had found a medal in the house, (Turing’s OBE) and Corell became very interested in the victim. He found out that he had been prosecuted for committing homosexual acts and that he had done some important war work.A turning point of the novel is the inquest. The coroner makes some rather fatuous comments about Turing’s death talking about “that type of man”. Corell then implies that the coroner does not know what he is talking about and thus getting into trouble with his superiors. After the inquest, Corell is approached by a stranger who says he is a logician, an ex-colleague of Turing’s at Cambridge. -

Everything Goes Back to the Beginning: Television Adaptation & Remaking
Everything Goes Back to the Beginning: television adaptation & remaking Nordic noir Abstract: As television drama undergoes a renaissance across Europe and the US, this article focuses on remakes of ‘Nordic noir’ crime serials. The genre has its origins in contemporary literary fiction, and became a cinema cause célèbre with the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novels, and the controversial US remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. While adaptation scholars have long discredited comparative approaches based on the source/target text binary organised along value-judgement lines, in terms of television remakes, the opposite is fast becoming the case; comparisons between different versions of the same narrative becomes playful and almost vital aspect of contemporary adaptation. While some theorists have argued that remakes often attempt to efface previous versions, in television, the opposite can be true. In examining the remakes of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Forbrydelsen (The Killing), Broen/Bron (The Bridge & The Tunnel) and Broadchurch (Gracepoint), this article proposes that a new type of ‘synchronous’ or ‘active’ adaptation invites some audiences to engage in a far more playful exchange of textual moments, augmented and overseen by social media, and that television remakes are now reflecting this. Setting Fires: Literary Women Blazing Trails for Contemporary Women Laura Salinas May 11, 2015 2 Literature consistently provides an unapologetic and relentless commentary on society and societal standards. Authors bring to life relatable characters that become symbols and icons for readers because they embody the fierce prowess, determination and strength of a hero, in a time when society lacks individuals with the energetic force of a hero. Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander is a non-hetero-normative empowered female character that breaks the gender roles and stereotypes that are generally placed upon female characters and women in society. -
“What Happened Ten Years Ago Is History, What Happened Last Year Is History, in This Industry It All Changes So Quickly”
“What happened ten years ago is history, what happened last year is history, in this industry it all changes so quickly” Management Control Systems as a Package in the Context of Innovation by Petter Berg & Philip Johnsson May 2018 Master’s Programme in Accounting and Finance Supervisor: Rolf G. Larsson Examiner: Johan Dergård Abstract Seminar date: May 31, 2018 Course: BUSN79 Degree Project in Accounting and Finance Authors: Petter Berg & Philip Johnsson Advisor: Rolf G. Larsson Keywords: Management control, Innovation, MCS as a package, Target Costing, Sports retail industry Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute to the context of MCSs supporting innovation. Further, the aim is to investigate how the MCS as a package can be modified to fit in the context of innovation. Methodology: A qualitative research approach was used, containing a literature review, an explanatory single-case study and limitations. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework is based on theories regarding the field of management control, innovation and target costing Empirical foundation: The empirical data consists of research conducted through a semi- structured interview with one case company in the sports retail industry. The empirical data also consists of previous research within the research area. Conclusions: This study finds that innovation of both incremental and radical character is present in the case of Stadium. Nevertheless, the radical innovation is dominant, with a locus of innovation from the day-to-day actions. The type of strategy and locus of innovation is supported by different MCSs. It is evident the MCS work as a package, where cultural controls and cybernetic controls are the major drivers in supporting innovation. -
Conventionally Unconventional: Lisbeth Salander's Sisters in Crime Barbara Fister Stieg Larsson and Scandinavian Crime Fiction
1 Conventionally Unconventional: Lisbeth Salander's Sisters in Crime Barbara Fister Stieg Larsson and Scandinavian Crime Fiction: An International Symposium May 20-21, 2011, UCLA Abstract: The enthusiasm with which the world has embraced Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and its non-conformist heroine is genuinely puzzling. Why do audiences in so many cultures cheer the exploits of a left-wing journalist and a female hacker misfit? Where did these characters come from and what makes their adventures appeal so widely? This talk will examine the way in which Larsson drew on crime fiction's traditional story types and on feminist contributions to the genre to explore the reception of the Millennium Trilogy and, in particular, Lisbeth Salander's international popularity. When I was sent an advanced reading copy of Knopf’s American edition of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to review for Mystery Scene, I was excited to finally discover what all the fuss was about. I had been following the UK reception of the book and had heard from French readers about the sensational series that everyone was reading compulsively. But I have to admit that, when I put it down, I wondered why it was such a hit and whether the book would work for an American audience. As I wrote in the review, “unlike the typical American bestseller, it is long, complex, and not paced with a stopwatch in hand.” Luckily, I didn’t predict it would flop or I would have been badly embarrassed. But I was—and still am—amazed that an audience that routinely elects to the bestseller list thrillers with two- page chapters, non-stop action, sexualized violence, and villains who are monstrously alien and come by their villainy by being either psychotic, Islamic, or Russian (and psychotic), would warm to a story that not only lacks a single, constantly accelerating arc, but is (even more alarmingly) leftist, feminist, and foreign—none of which have previously been predictors of success in the American book market. -
