From the Editor

Welcome to the September edition which was delayed for technical reasons namely; new desktop loaded with Windows 10, a new word processing program Libre Office which I had changed to retain sanity, and my technical advisor Harry Forkin on holiday.

Thanks to Natalie Moore and Nicki Edmond for their Mini Biographies, and if you are reading this also to Harry for making this possible.

We have had a great start to the autumnal road running season with large numbers competing at Tholthorpe, Great North Run and the Hull Marathon and relays at which we had 60 club members plus 6 guests who helped make a total of 16 teams.

The cross country season started well for the juniors who fielded a team in the pre season relays for first time in well over 10 years, and the Under-13 Girls team finished 3rd team

Committee Meeting held at Scarborough Rugby Club on 6th September 2018.

Present: Shaun Tymon, Simon Valente, Sean Kelly, Sharon Houghton, Chris Wade, David Field, Harry Forkin, Ralph Broadley, Tony Tomaszewicz

Apologies for absence: None

Notes of last meeting and matters arising: 17 members have shown interest in undertaking first aid training. This list will be reduced to 12 which is the limit for numbers accepted on to the available course. New track: Shaun has been in touch with Matt Hewison following the last committee meeting and he has supported the club’s position as outlined in the notes of the meeting. A meeting with England Athletics regarding the venture will take place in September.

Baron’s Gym have committed to accepting SAC members’ cards for access to facilities; progress towards this going live is awaited. Permission has been given for SAC to have a notice board within the rugby club building, a decision on where this will be is yet to be made.

Finance report: Tony Tomaszewicz reported the following account balances; Race account: £20.095.83 Current account: £17,346.32 Savings account: £41,680.93

Social events:

The club’s 20-year anniversary event has been notified to members in the hope of establishing the number attending. Juniors will be included.

Junior section issues: Tuesday nights are averaging about 20 attendees. Activities will move inside in 2-3 weeks. Chris Wade is anticipating holding the Sportshall trials providing facilities are available. A discussion took place regarding first aid cover for junior sessions. It was confirmed that SAC does not have responsibility for providing cover, though some coaching members may be able to provide this. Responsibility for ensuring cover is in place lies with the organisation operating the facility, ie Barons/the rugby club.

McCains 10k/Fun Run: Planning and organisation is in hand. A sub-committee meeting will be held on September 20th. Sally Kingscott is now the medical manager for the event. A waiting list of around 400 people exists for the 10k: entrants who notify the club of their withdrawal from the event will be replaced from the list. David Field of the 10k sub-committee confirmed also that transfer of numbers in the usual way between entrants and others wishing to take part is permitted and is taking place.

Northern Athletics affiliation: Following an approach from NA, it was decided that the club will affiliate to NA for year 2018/19. This will ensure members can take part in NA events. There are no plans to increase club subscriptions to reflect the cost of affiliation.

Travel to races: Chris Wade proposed that the cost of coach/minibus travel to events for nonmembers should be higher than for members. The figures for the present will be £8 for members and £10 for non- members. A record of profit/loss for trips undertaken over the next year will be kept, to inform a decision regarding future pricing. It was agreed that transport to NYSD cross country events would be supplied if there was sufficient interest, and that provision would be reviewed at the end of the season.

Strategic direction of club: Decisions made this month in line with the agreed strategic direction included those to pay for affiliation to Northern Athletics and to provide continued subsidised travel to races, both of which facilitate participation by members.

Any other business: The agreed storage facility at the rugby club has not yet been sorted. Harry will take this up with the club. The club’s AGM will take place on November 1st, 2018.

Natalie Moore

Years as a runner; started running in Summer 2016 purely to aid weight loss and fitness. I made it about 200 yards before I had to stop and hold myself together to prevent being sick! Persistence started paying off though and I soon built up to 5k. I never envisaged that I would ever enter a race but soon found myself signing upto McCain 10k 2016. I was so proud to finish that without stopping in just over 70 minutes. After that I was on such a high, and under the influence of celebratory drinks, that I entered Vale of York 10 miler. The rest is history. I joined SAC in April 2017 with the encouragement of Emma Simmons and Emma Jane Birley who I had met through a local bootcamp. Best thing I ever did!

Favourite race; Road - Great North Run 2017, a busy half marathon with an amazing atmosphere! I was only 20 seconds away from my half PB. Coming in at 2:23. I’m looking forward to GNR 2018. Trail - Hardmoors Princess 2017, my first ever trail run. I opted for the 17.5-mile course (choice of 8.5, 17.5 and 30). Starting at Ravenscar, taking in sections of the Cleveland way, cinder track and other trails/track and heading out to Robin Hoods bay with 2000ft of elevation. All whilst wearing a tutu and tiara!! I’m also taking on this challenge again Sept 2018 and hope to beat my time of 4:44.

Favourite female athlete; If I am honest I don’t really follow anyone. I am inspired daily by SAC club members who encourage me to keep going!!

Favourite male athlete; As above Targets; To PB at McCain 10k (current is 103:58) and beat my marathon PB of 5:28 when taking on Chester Marathon. Both events are in October. I am also taking on the White Rose Ultra again in November (Emma Simmons fault) so I’m hoping to smash that 9-hour finishing time too!

Ambitions; Just to keep running, keep smiling and hopefully improve at the same time!! I would love to complete the hardmoors marathon series (7 ‘marathons’ - usually nearly 30 miles with tough hills within 12 months) and also the New York road marathon by the time I hit 40! Would love to increase my Ultra distance too!

Funniest moments: Whilst racing: Descending at Wainstones, thinking my technique had improved massively only to have a total superman (woman) moment after tripping on a cobble. It wasn’t funny at the time but it’s hilarious now! Also, being overtaken by a dinosaur at Manchester marathon!

Post-race: Picking up my shopping from Morrison’s after the HM princess wearing my pink tshirt, tutu, tiara and medal! I was proud as punch! I got a few strange looks, especially as I started to video myself too!

Nicki Edmond

Years as a runner; 2.5! I decided I wanted to get fit before I got to 50 so started doing Bootcamp in August 2015. I met a couple of people there who persuaded me to take up running. My best friend bought me the Run Fat Bitch Run book which was basically the book version of couch to 5k! My first official run was Dalby No Ego night run in Jan 2016. From there I went on to do 10ks, some half marathons and then signed up for York Marathon in 2017. It was during my training and then after joining the SAC group at the carb loading with some persuasion by Natalie Moore and Jean Fish to join SAC.

Best performances; I’m a cart horse not a race horse and always try my best! Probably my first attempt at Bridge half in 2017. Everyone told me I’d never get a PB as it was too hilly so I went out to enjoy it. At the top of the bridge I realised if I put my foot down I could beat my previous half time, By my standards I flew the last mile and cut 2 minutes off my previous half.

Favourite race; My first attempt at a different distance and those with a view.

Favourite female athletes; Paula Radcliffe, Liz McColgan. However I so much respect for the older ladies in SAC , Sue,Haslam , Jean Fish, Liz Jones and Ann Kitto who make me believe whilst I took up running at a later age I’ve hopefully still got lots to give

Favourite male athlete; Mo Farah and again like the Older SAC ladies I have so much respect for Harry, Ralph and Neil

Target; To go sub 5 hours in a marathon Ambition; To do a few of the Hardmoors series runs and fell races

Funniest moments; My first Poultry run dressed as an elf and last week’s marathon du Malton. Never thought you could eat and drink normal food and alcohol on a 10k run,

Cartoon of the Month

Quote of the Month

The marathon is like a bullfight. There are two ways to kill a bull, for instance. There is the easy way, for one. But all the great matadors end up either dead or mauled because for them killing the bull is not nearly as important as how they kill the bull. They always approach the bull at the greatest risk to themselves, and I admire that. In the marathon, likewise, there are two ways to win. There's the easy way if all you care about is winning. You hang back and risk nothing. Then kick and try to nip the leaders at the end. Or you can push, challenge the others, make it an exciting race, risking everything. Maybe you lose, but as for me, I'd rather run a gutsy race, pushing all the way and lose, than run a conservative, easy race only for a win.

Editor note. Prior to the doping allegations during his spell as a coach to Mo Farah, he was best known for his performances in New York and Boston Marathons in the early 1980s. The Boston victory was known as 'The Duel in the Sun' and this will explain his philosophy. He reminds me of Steve Jones Press Reports York 5-kilometre Road Series. Race 5.
