PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Joe Coleman , the controversial New York-based "shock artist" who performed at the Boston Film/Video Foundation Oct. 29, pleaded guilty yesterday in Roxbury District Court to possession of fireworks and cruelty to animals. He paid a total of $662 in fines and was put on probation for one year. The charge of possession of an inferno machine was dismissed by the Commonwealth. A count of burning of a dwelling was dismissed by the judge, according to Asst. District Attorney Robert Benson, because he saw no "willful or malicious intent." Coleman's wife, Nancy, a co-defendent in the case is in the hospital and could not appear, her attorney said. Her case will be heard June 15. Coleman's act, which is captured on the "Mondo New York" videotape, consisted, in part, of detonating explosives attached to his chest and biting the heads off mice. "The judge said he cannot come into Massachusetts and perform anything related to animals," said Benson. "My understanding was he's not going to perform any 'shock art' in Massachusetts anymore." Asked about Coleman's demeanor, Benson said, "He was very subdued and respectable toward the judge, very humble.

  • The Legal Gaze and Women's Bodies
252 Columbia Journal of Gender and Law 32.2 “WE JUST LOOKED AT THEM AS ORDINARY PEOPLE LIKE WE WERE:” THE LEGAL GAZE AND WOMEN’S BODIES YXTA MAYA MURRAY* Abstract This Article analyzes the struggles of two female musicians who became caught up in the criminal justice system because they revealed their bodies. Using archival research and personal interviews, I tell the story of punk rocker Wendy O. Williams’ 1981-1984 obscenity and police brutality court battles. I also relay the life of Lorien Bourne, a disabled and lesbian rock-n-roller charged with disorderly conduct in Bowling Green, Ohio, in 2006. I examine how legal actors, including courts and jurors, viewed Williams and Bourne using classist, ableist, sexist, and homophobic optics. In so doing, I extend my previous work on legal “gazes,” or what I have called the legal practice of “peering.” I end the Article by looking to the women’s art and lives as correctives to oppressive manners of legal seeing. • 'Turning Rebellion Into Money' Catalog #2
‘Turning Rebellion into Money’ Catalog #2 Mare Booksellers Mare Booksellers | www.marebooksellers.com Introduction Catalog #2 from Mare Booksellers continues to explore the contributions of punk fanzines to pop culture and art. While the DIY aesthetic used in punk fanzines from the 1970s both informed and arose from punk music and earlier avant-garde art movements, fanzines were equally important for their dissemination of information and opinions. In a movement where establishment voices were mistrusted, ignored and reviled, fanzines offered a venue for news and ideas outside mainstream sources. Written by fans or insiders associated with various bands, fanzines contained information on popular punk and new wave acts from sources equal to the audience to which they were addressed. Low production values and costs enabled quick communication of ideas and events within the punk community. Due to limitations in form and materials, punk fanzines used innovative methods to convey artistic and philosophical principles. Fanzines featured in this catalog provide notable examples of the mix of information dissemination and visual appeal. This includes zines such as ‘New Deseases’ with photos by James Stark; ‘Chainsaw’ and its use of color printing techniques; ‘No’ and ‘Beat It!’, both of which document the No Wave movement in New York; ‘Fanzine for a Blank Generation’ and ‘Bikini Girl’, two zines by women providing a different perspective on an often male dominated punk culture. And, in keeping with the last catalog, underground newspapers such as ‘Rat Subterranean’, the ‘Atlantic Weekly’ and others are included as examples of forerunners of the genre. • The Plasmatics' Brand of High-Energy Rock 'N' Roll May Only Be
Wendy O Williams - 10 Years of Revolutionary Rock and Roll - MVD Visuals - DVD Page 1 of 3 Home | | Archives | TAPSheet | C 01/03/07 Reviewed by - Matt Rowe The Plasmatics’ brand of high-energy Rock ‘n’ Roll may only be matched by a few bands even to this day. They came in on the punk wave in 1978 and gave 10 years of ferocious music along with the theatre to back it up that included blowing up of cars, chain-sawing, and more than a measure of flesh courtesy of one firebrand, Wendy O Williams. She flaunted the barriers that were in place although they were certainly challenged by other bands. But no one had the same measure of intensity that drove The Plasmatics to a greater height of rock insurrection, and it was all governed by the heat that boiled inside the girl that let no boundary contain her. MVD Visual releases a DVD that contains more than 3 hours of Wendy O Williams spotlight focused on the front of The Plasmatics, Wendy O Williams And The and her band. WoW was called The Queen of Punk, The High Priestess Plasmatics of Metal, The Dominatrix of the Decibels, and The Queen of Shock Rock, which, all by itself, was an appropriate name as she consistently found the nudge that would upset and shock in an increasing manner until the band outlived its shock appeal. This DVD shows all of the theatrics, sexuality, and nihilism that accompanied a Plasmatics show. With an ability to incite her audience, Wendy O Williams, who pushed the exposure of her nude flesh as close to the limit allowable in that period, used every angle to take rock to the next level (we’ve regressed since then).

  • Chapter Six “Blank Generation”
Chapter Six “Blank Generation” Prologue: The Effect of the American Avant-Garde on 1970’s East Coast Rock 1 Generation X Generation X (born between ~1961-1977) was wedged between the baby boomers (~1945-1961) and Generation "Y” (Millennial Generation) (~1977-1994). Generation X, sometimes referred to as the “baby bust”, often disdained the apparent values of the baby boomers: over-achieving, social experimentation, impracticality, and excessive idealism. Gen X kids, feeling somehow alienated as if they had missed the party, refused to compete with a generation twice its size and with most of the toys. The resultant attitudes left their mark on rock styles of the period: the music expresses either carefree abandon in such styles as glitter/glam and disco, or wrought with self-doubt and alienation, as in punk and new wave. The Roots Of Generation X Music In America In the mid to late 1960's, there was a reaction to the complexities and excesses of “artsy" British rock and the commercialization of flower-power generation pop music. Much of the music seemed to have become institutionalized, complacent, and missing an aggressive edge. Some of the late 1960's rockers felt the need to get back to the abrasiveness and rudeness of earlier rock and roll.
