Akron Symphony: “American Journey” at E.J. Thomas Hall (September 19) by Daniel Hathaway Pianist Philip Thomson joined music director Christopher Wilkins and the Akron Symphony Orchestra in a spirited concert on Saturday, September 19 at E.J. Thomas Hall. The “American Journey” began in Mexico with Aaron Copland’s El Salón México, stopped in Texarkana, Texas for Clint Needham’s Southern Air, and traveled to somewhere in the Wild West for Copland’s Rodeo before meeting up with George Gershwin in New York. Gershwin followed his 1924 Rhapsody in Blue a year later with a true concerto for piano and orchestra — the Concerto in F — which paid closer homage to classical forms while taking its melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic cues from American music of the 1920s. Writing in the New York Tribune, the composer noted that the opening movement is based on a Charleston rhythm, the slow movement is “a purer form” of the American blues, and the finale is “an orgy of rhythms, starting violently, and keeping the same pace throughout.” Longtime University of Akron piano professor Philip Thomson embraced the classical and contemporary elements of the concerto with equal enthusiasm, contributing technically brilliant and soulful playing throughout the engaging work. Wilkins and the orchestra wrapped colorful orchestral textures around Thomson’s fine fingerwork. The string section sounded full and vibrant, and soloists — especially principal trumpet Scott Johnston, English hornist Mary Kausek, and concertmaster Alan Bodman — added lusciously to the pianoorchestral conversation. The perpetual motion finale was as precise as it was thrilling. Copland’s El Sálon México was inspired by his visit to a seedy, southoftheborder nightclub in 1932, his 1942 Rodeo by the success of a previous “cowboy ballet,” Billy the Kid, in 1938. -

Rev. John White, The Founder of New England Launching the Journey Towards Unitarianism The founder of New England never saw its shores. John White was his name. He was the rector of St. Peters and Holy Trinity Parishes in Dorchester, the small county town of Devon in the West of England. He set into motion the movement that culminated in the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There had been several visitors to the coast for nearly a century before White began his endeavors, Champlain, Cabot, Smith, and Gosnold among them. Temporary trading posts were established with the goal of exploiting such resources as furs and fish. But there was no vision of establishing permanent settlements in the region. While a group of Separatists had landed on Cape Cod Bay in 1620, they had set out from Leiden after years of self-imposed exile in The Netherlands. They did pause briefly in Plymouth in Devon; they had little connection with any larger organized group in England. They survived in Plymouth in Massachusetts. Captain John Smith, after his initial efforts in Jamestown, became an advocate for more permanent settlements. But, unlike the so-called Pilgrims, those that were planted were not based on religious convictions. Samuel Eliot Morrison in his Builders of the Bay Colony mentions several. “Massachusetts (named by Captain John Smith) was dotted with petty fishing and trading stations. There was William Blaxton, who set up bachelor quarters on the eminence later known as Beacon Hill, Thomas Watford, the pioneer of Charlestown; Samuel Maverick at Winnesimmit (now Chelsea), David Thompson, a Scots gentleman, who settled the island in Boston harbor that still bears his name…” (Morrison, p. -

Well , get along now and then pretty well , thanks to the inspiration that seems to come to me f rom the friendly sym pathy of my aud ience but there is no inspiration P REFACE . in a blank sheet of paper , and there is no applause in pen s and ink . When one makes a speech one seeks kindly faces around one , and it is wonderful what assistance there is in a little applause . You take up the report of a speech in a newspaper ; “ i s you see that it peppered with Laughter , ” s Applause , Loud cheer , and so on that sets you reading it , and carries you on to the end . -

It is one of the world’s most recognized and photographed structures, and Dan will illustrate the timeline of the Eiffel Tower over its 128 year history. PARKING: Can be tough. Foley: The Home Front Revisited: Visions of Union From Professional Women Writers of the American North, 1859-1877 (Under the direction of Philip F. Gura) This project reintroduces a series of recently recovered women authors of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. These women, I argue, form a print community whose fiction uses tropes of domestic disorder in order to reimagine the home not as rigidly hierarchical but as malleable to the needs of the women who inhabit it. Significantly, the Civil War seems to be a creative asset rather than an impediment to such revisionist fiction. While wives and daughters remained, often sans patriarch, on the home front, their perception of the shape of the American family and the institutions that undergirded it transformed. This print community of women authors narrated versions of that changed perception through its novels and short stories. Exploring this alternative vision of the American family at home reveals a literary reimagining of the terms of feminine domesticity, the depth and scope of which have not yet been fully acknowledged by scholars of literature or history. -

Most of the materials in the collection appear to have been collected for their historical interest.
