[email protected] CURRICULUM VITAE Synthesis Executive Director of Fundación Neotrópica (12 years), one of the most established environmental NGOs in Central America; Board Member in representation of the Costa Rican Council of Ministers of the RECOPE, Costa Rican Petroleum Company (appointed in order to support the transformation into a leading company in renewable energies in support of Costa Rica's De-carbonization of the Economy Plan). Experience (27 years) in academic work (higher education) in the areas of Ecological Economics, Sustainable Development Studies, Latin American Studies and Environmental Law with special emphasis in ecosystem service valuation, and Political Ecology/Economy. Research experience (27 years) in Ecological Economics, Political Ecology, and Latin American Studies including specific topics as the blue economy, environmental conflicts, integrative sustainable development indicators and ecosystem service/ environmental damage valuation. Experience (12 years) in project funding, execution and administration for projects in community-based coastal ecosystem conservation, Ecological Economics, indigenous/ sustainable production systems, environmental governance, human rights and the environment, illicit economies and socio-ecological conflicts. Academic preparation includes degree as a Specialist (graduate degree equivalent to LLM) and Juris Doctor (Lic.) in Agrarian and Environmental Law and Attorney at Law with 33 years of experience in Environmental, Agrarian and Labor Law practice. Masters of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics (emphasis in Applied Economics, International Trade and Econometrics). Ph.D. in Natural Sciences for Development (Culture and Environmental Management). Publications include one book, several book chapters, refereed and invited professional journal articles, book reviews, technical reports, and numerous newspaper, newsletter and magazine articles. Other professional and volunteer activities include keynotes, guest lectures, professional presentations, radio interviews and active participation in professional societies and advocacy groups. Volunteer Work has included being a Board Member of the International Society for Ecological Economics and the President of the Mesoamerican Society for Ecological Economics. Honors include a Fulbright Scholarship (1989-1991), a Honorable Mention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for outstanding service to Costa Rica in valuation of environmental damages for the International Court of Justice at The Hague (2018) and a Magna Cum Laude distinction for his doctoral dissertation on Ecological Debt and Environmental Justice in Costa Rica´s protected areas. The U.S. Society for Ecological Economics created in 2003 the Bernardo Aguilar award to honor the professors that inspire students to undertake this field of study. 1 Professional Experience I- Current Executive/Technical Director Fundación Neotropica, San José, Costa Rica. August 2008-Current Executive Director in charge of funding, project management and administration, planning, personnel management and technical support for Fundación Neotrópica, one of the oldest and most prestigious environmental NGOs in Central America. It has, during the last 33 years, specialized in community-based sustainable development, research, education and corporate programs in topics centered in community-based conservation, sustainable tourism, buffer zones, biological corridors and managed ecosystems in general. Developed a new mission and vision and helped the NGO recover from financial deficit to operating with success (1 million dollar yearly budget and 22 employees) through the introduction of newer areas of sustainability studies. Developed and executed pioneer projects in the areas of community-based coastal ecosystem conservation, Ecological Economics, indigenous/ sustainable production systems, environmental governance, human rights and the environment, illicit economies and socio-ecological conflicts.
