It was directed by and featured an ensemble cast of American, Australian, British, and French actors and actresses. The title evokes the Rupert Brooke poem "The Soldier". The film was driven into production by who used his influence with the The Foreign Field to make it and with the various famous actors to appear in it. Cyril McKern and Waldo Randolphwho are British and American, respectively, have both returned to France in search of the same woman Moreau with whom they each had a rendezvous in unknown to the other. Cyril is accompanied by fellow veteran Amos Guinnesswhile Waldo has his petty daughter Beverly Chaplin and her henpecked husband Herrmann in tow. Along the way they meet the recently widowed Lisa Bacallwho has The Foreign Field in search of her brother's The Foreign Field. Eventually it is revealed that Amos saved Cyril's life during the battle of Normandy in but sustained a severe head-wound in the process. The wound The Foreign Field left Amos permanently brain-damaged and Cyril has been his carer ever since. Cyril also confides in the others that Amos does not have long left to live and this will be the last chance for the two men to come to Normandy to pay their respects to their close friend Briggs who was killed in action. Waldo has come to France for a similar reason, to visit the grave of a close buddy who was killed on D-Day. The trip helps The Foreign Field Beverly's problems into perspective and gives a new lease of life to her marriage. And it The Foreign Field revealed that Lisa's brother was in fact a German soldier but instead of showing hostility, the veterans instead pay their respects at his grave, in tribute to the bravery of the German forces who took part in the battle. The frame is completed via Amos' jam jar with the final image of the jar holding a handful of wildflowers and placed in front of Briggs' gravestone on Omaha The Foreign Field. But they have managed, despite their desires, to maintain their propriety. For instance, besides the number of family members and relatives serving in the military, there are a few acting The Foreign Field diplomats and quasi-government aides, both in Britain and abroad. There is so much more I would like to say in praise of this novel. But to do that The Foreign Field be to reveal too much about the events and personalities who are impacted by them. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is a wonderful storyteller. Feb 01, Anne The Foreign Field it it was amazing. One of my favorite historical fictions based on English history. This is an incredible series with 31 Volumes tracing the Morland family dynasty, beginning in the 's and proceeds, thus far, into WWI. Though the main characters are fictional the historical accuracy and detail is quite remarkable. A very personal side of history that one does not often read about. Also, her writing style is beautifully done and raises "historical fictions" to a new level. I highly recommend it; a good read to One of my favorite historical fictions based on English history. I highly recommend it; a good read to escape from reality! Sep 23, Jane Menard rated it really liked it. I love The Morland Dynasty series. Her two or three books on World War I, from a perspective of soldiers in the trenches and their families The Foreign Field home, gave me such an insight into the horrors and devastation of that war. As the noose tightens around the royal family, the sympathy that harrod-eagles usually builds for her characters The Foreign Field lacking, these characters are not as well developed as the reader usually enjoys, they are more like two dimensional figures on history's stage. But, the concurrent storyline of the battles at Ypres is compelling and the soldiers' plight The Foreign Field the trenches and the The Foreign Field can not be ignored. To give credit where credit is due, harrod-eagles does not allow the awful years in the trenches to pass in a page or two. Mar 13, Bettynz Larraine rated it it was amazing Shelves: morlandhistorical Unbelievable timing. As we get closer to the present day, Ms Harrod-Eagles covers less and less historical time per volume, but they are no less gripping for that. The Foreign Field has an incredible way of bringing history to life, and reading about WWI events from the perspective of the characters, as I was simultaneously reading about the same events in the Listener and watching documentary coverage about The Foreign Field on tv, was quite special. I hadn't planned it, but it was very real. Oliver, off to work The Foreign Field "th Unbelievable timing. I have the bad habit of starting somewhere in the middle--or near the end of a series. But if I like this one, there are lots to go back and read Which is what I am going to do. There is definitely a "mindless fluff" edge to these books--I mean, does there have to be character there for every major event occurring? Here there is one who is improbably "up close and personal" with the doomed Romanov family and there were referrals to another having been involved in the Titanic disaster! None the I have the bad habit of starting somewhere in the middle--or near the end of a series. None the less, there is a large cast of characters and just enough characterization to make them come to life, impeccably researched history, and 30 proceeding books to keep me going for some weeks. Though I fear that I will have to hunt through various regional libraries to get most of them! View 2 comments. May 14, Karoline rated it really liked it Shelves: favorites. The chunck of books taking place during WWI are, by far, the The Foreign Field of all in the entire series. In each one, there has been a The Foreign Field of profound sadness, unlike in any of the other books in this series. The author is doing a phenomenal job of portraying just how different this war was from every other war in history and the tremendous The Foreign Field wide- spread impact it had on people.
