Great Rollright is a secluded rural parish adjoining the Warwickshire border, c.2¾ miles north of Chipping Norton and the same south-west of Hook Norton.1 The village, comprising several distinct ‘ends’ now partly linked by modern infill, developed on a south-facing slope close to an ancient ridgeway from Stow-on-the Wold (Glos.) to Banbury. Little outlying settlement existed until enclosure in 1776, which prompted the building of a few isolated farmhouses, while more recent development increased the overall number of dwellings from 80-odd in the 1930s to over 200 in 2011. The economy was predominantly agricultural until the 20th century, benefiting briefly from the Cheltenham to Banbury railway (1887–1962), and in the 19th century the presence of a large body of poorly paid farm workers probably contributed to increased Nonconformity. Significant landowners included Brasenose College, Oxford (also church patron), and the resident Sheppards (1583–1742). The prefix ‘Great’, 1 This account was written in 2019–20 and revised in 2021. • A Conversion-Period Burial in an Ancient Landscape: a High-Status Female Grave Near the Rollright Stones, Oxfordshire/Warwickshire
Chapter 11 A Conversion-Period Burial in an Ancient Landscape: A High-Status Female Grave near the Rollright Stones, Oxfordshire/Warwickshire Helena Hamerow In March 2015, a metal detector user uncovered several early medieval artefacts from land adjacent to the Rollright Stones, a major prehistoric complex that straddles the Oxfordshire—Warwickshire border (O.S. SP 2963 3089). He alerted the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the well-preserved burial of a fe- male, aged around 25–35 years and aligned South-North, was subsequently ex- cavated (Fig. 11.1).1 The grave—which was shallow, undisturbed (apart from a small area of disturbance near the skull caused by the detectorist) and pro- duced no evidence for a coffin or other structures— contained a number of remarkable objects indicating a 7th-century date for the burial. This was con- firmed by two samples of bone taken for AMS radiocarbon dating, which pro- duced a combined date of 622–652 cal AD at 68.2 per cent probability and 604–656 cal AD at 95.4 per cent probability (OxA-37509, OxA-37510). The buri- al lay some 50 m northeast of a standing stone presumed to be prehistoric in date, known locally as the ‘King Stone’.2 This burial and its remarkable setting form a significant addition to the corpus of well-furnished female burials which are shedding new light on the role of women in Conversion-period Eng- land, about which Barbara Yorke has written so compellingly. At the time of writing, conservation of the artefacts from the burial has not begun and the brief description of the main objects provided here must there- fore be regarded as provisional.3 The first and most striking object to be identified 1 The excavation was undertaken by Anni Byard, David Williams, and Ros Tyrrell, Finds Liaison Officers for Oxfordshire, Surrey and East Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.

We would also like to thank the following organisations for their help, support and assistance: • Stratford-upon-Avon District Council • Stratford Rural Transport Partnership • Rural Development Commission The Link’s first 25 years story is one of success. • The Countryside Agency All involved should feel proud. We hope you will enjoy reading this commemorative publication. • Warwickshire Rural Community Council Looking to the future however, please spread the word • The Development Commission for Rural England about the Link so that we can continue to flourish. Shipston Link 25 Years Cover 8:Layout 1 12/10/12 15:37 Page 4 SHIPSTONLINK THE BEGINNING In early 1983 Shipston Town Council called a meeting of all local Parishes to discuss self-help schemes which the Parishes could consider regarding rural transportation. That meeting decided to set up a Community Transport Working Party. Later the name was changed to the Transportation Co-ordination Group and was chaired by Dr Theo Schofield. A working party survey showed that many communities were poorly served by public transportation (does that not sound familiar now in 2011?) and many households had only one car which departs daily with the wage earner.
