Words cannot express the appreciation we have for Jordan, his quick thinking and heroic actions. Not all heroes wear capes, and in this instance, the hero just happened to be driving an ice resurfacer. Update: Zamboni, the company that originally developed and manufactured this type of ice resurfacing machine, has publicly distanced itself from this fire, as the model in the video is not produced by the Zamboni brand. It is in London, and the unfortunate poor lead horrifying lives in the city's From Hell slum, Whitechapel. Harassed by gangs and From Hell to walk the streets for a living, Mary Kelly and her small group of companions trudge on through this daily misery, their only From Hell being that things can't get any worse. Yet things From Hell do when their friend Ann is kidnapped and they are drawn into a conspiracy with links higher up than they could possibly imagine. The kidnapping is soon followed by From Hell gruesome murder of another woman, Polly, and it becomes apparent that they are being hunted down, one by one. Sinister even by Whitechapel standards, the murder From Hell the attention of Inspector Fred Abberline, a brilliant yet troubled man whose police work is often aided by his psychic abilities. Abberline becomes deeply involved with the case, which takes on personal meaning to him when he and Mary begin to fall in love. But as he gets closer to the truth, Whitechapel becomes more and I'm pretty much a fan of Johnny Depp, as I usually appreciate his performance regardless of my ultimate opinion of the movie itself. From Hell seemed like a natural extension of this character archetype, with a loosely-based historical inspiration, adding weight to the horrific scenarios that it depicts. With that in mind, I decided to check it out. There are many things that are done right in this movie, number one being the atmosphere. Racial tensions, corrupt officials, and secret societies complicate the picture, and the actors in their elaborate costumes capture the unrest perfectly. In From Hell, these little deviations in historical accuracy felt From Hell creative, and mostly fit in with the ambiguous nature of one the most infamous unsolved mysteries. The faults, while noticeable, From Hell not disqualifying. The characters are played well, despite being mostly unremarkable to begin with. Depp's Inspector Abberline is likable, though his behavior is inconsistent. This also serves to make his relationship with Heather Graham, as the female lead, seem slightly artificial. The visionary, opium-induced haze that enables him to keep pace with the killer was an interesting touch, but wasn't utilized to its full potential, in my opinion. From Hell, the killer's character is not developed enough, and so comes across as "cartoonishly" scary, lacking in realism. Ultimately, this is a tense thriller that will captivate your attention, with a unique interpretation of the Jack the Ripper mythos. Looking for some great streaming picks? When their friend Ann Crook is kidnapped, they are drawn into a conspiracy with links From Hell high society. The kidnapping is followed by the gruesome murder of another woman, Martha Tabram ; and it becomes apparent that they are being hunted down one by one as prostitutes are murdered and mutilated post-mortem. The murder of Martha and her companions grabs the attention of Whitechapel Police Inspector Frederick Abberlinea brilliant, yet troubled, man whose police work is often aided by his psychic "visions. From Hell investigations reveal that the murders, while gruesome, imply that an educated person is responsible due to the precise and almost surgical method used. Ann is found a few days later in a workhouse having been lobotomized after officials and doctors supposedly found her to be insane, though it is implied this From Hell done to silence her. Abberline consults Sir William Gulla physician to the Royal Family, drawing on his From Hell and knowledge of medicine. During this meeting, it is revealed Abberline is struggling with opium addiction. Gull's findings, coupled with his superiors impeding his investigations, point Abberline to a darker and more organized conspiracy than he originally thought. Abberline becomes deeply involved with the case, which takes on personal meaning to him when he and Mary begin to fall in love. Abberline deduces that Freemason influence is definitely present in these crimes. His superior, a high ranking Freemason himself, From Hell makes direct intervention and suspends Abberline. It is then revealed that Gull is the killer. He has been killing the witnesses to painter Albert Sickert 's forbidden Catholic marriage to Crook, who From Hell his legitimate daughter, Alice. Sickert is actually Prince Albertgrandson of reigning Queen Victoriaand therefore Alice is heiress to the British throne. Gull boasts to Abberline that he will go down in history for giving "birth to the 20th century. The Freemasons try to have Abberline eliminated without leaving any witnesses, but Abberline fights back and kills two of the assassins by overturning a carriage. Abberline tries to From Hell Mary, but From Hell too late, and blames his superior for not helping From Hell or Godley on the cases. Abberline does From Hell but watch Mary's mutilated body being taken away. Gull's increasingly sinister behavior lends an insight into his murderous, but calculated, mind. Rather than From Hell charge Gull, the Freemasons decide to lobotomize him to protect themselves and the Royal Family from the scandal.

It was the realization that this text is not only about the exploration of the memory of the Nazi genocide of Roma but it is also a context which made me possible to meet great people, to gain incredibly meaningful experience and knowledge academically, socially and personally, and to learn to be aware of the position from where I am speaking. It was a little bit more than four years of my life, and this project was developed, nurtured and completed together with many people whom I am thankful to and whom I shall keep in my memories. This research would have never begun if I had not met Júlia Szalai at a course titled “Sociological Approaches to Race and Ethnicity: The Roma in Post-communist Central Europe” at the Central European University in 2008. A year later I had the chance to be her research assistant in an FP7 research project on ethnic differences in education. I was in that privileged position that Júlia paved my way for many years and I immersed myself in the realm of her knowledge and enjoyed every bits and pieces of the work we did together.

  • A4- What's New in Books.Pdf
Inside This Book (Are Three Books) by Barney Saltzberg Releasing April 2015, Recommended for ages 3-6 Three siblings create three books of their own using blank paper that they bind together (in descending sizes to match birth order, of course). One sibling’s work inspires the next, and so on, with each book’s text and art mirroring the distinct interests and abilities of its creator. Upon completion of their works, the siblings put one book inside the other, creating a new book to be read and shared by all! The Legends of Lake on the Mountain, by Roderick Bens (Leaders & Legacies series) – Recommended for boys grades 3 – 5 This series is surprisingly good with all of the fast paced elements that readers look for in a paranormal adventure story. This series is a great way to pique young readers’ Interest in Canadian history with notes in back that separate fact from fiction and provide more historical detail. I found myself Googling some of the events mentioned in this book to see if they really happened! Under the Pig Tree, by Margie Palatino, Releasing April 2015, Recommended for ages 3-6 The publisher and author of Under a Pig Tree seem to be having communication issues. The author has written a clear, no-nonsense history of figs. But the publisher is sure she meant pigs. After all, what’s the difference between two measly letters? What results is a hilarious illustrated history of pigs, from the earliest times (“Pigs were presented as ‘medals’ to the winners of the first Olympics”) to the present day (“There is nothing better than enjoying a cup of tea or glass of milk with one of those famous Pig Newtons”).

  • The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Interview with Oliver Stone, 19 January 2010 In relation to the Classification and Ratings Administration Interviewer: How do you see the issue of cinematic censorship? Oliver Stone: The ratings thing is very much a limited game. If you talk to Joan Graves, you’ll get the facts. The rules are the rules.

  • Models of Time Travel
MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

  • How Noninstitutionalized Media Change the Relationship Between the Public and Media Coverage of Trials
06__WHEELER__CONTRACT PROOF.DOC 11/18/2008 11:41:41 AM HOW NONINSTITUTIONALIZED MEDIA CHANGE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND MEDIA COVERAGE OF TRIALS MARCY WHEELER* I INTRODUCTION Justice Brennan’s concurring opinion in Nebraska Press Ass’n v. Stuart1 puts citizenship and the public at the heart of the purpose of media coverage of legal proceedings: Commentary and reporting on the criminal justice system is at the core of the First Amendment values, for the operation and integrity of that system is of crucial import to citizens concerned with the administration of government. Secrecy of judicial action can only breed ignorance and distrust of courts and suspicion concerning the competence and impartiality of judges; free and robust reporting, criticism, and debate can contribute to public understanding of the rule of law and to comprehension of the functioning of the entire criminal justice system, as well as improve the quality of that system by subjecting it to the cleansing effects of exposure and public accountability.2 That is, media coverage of legal proceedings should further the public understanding of those proceedings and of the legal system generally and should foster oversight over its functioning. Unfortunately, much coverage of legal proceedings now serves to increase ratings rather than to increase the public’s understanding of the justice system.3 Moreover, examples like early coverage of the Duke lacrosse case show that the press can exacerbate—rather than expose—abuses of the judicial system and the legal system generally. Since the advent of the Internet, however, additional media outlets—like blogs and wikis—have begun to change the relationship between media Copyright © 2008 by Marcy Wheeler.

  • Chapter 1 | the Leader’S Light Or Shadow 3 ©SAGE Publications Table 1.1 the Behaviors and Personal Characteristics of Toxic Leaders
CHAPTER The Leader’s Light or 1 Shadow We know where light is coming from by looking at the shadows. —Humanities scholar Paul Woodruff What’s Ahead This chapter introduces the dark (bad, toxic) side of leadership as the first step in promoting good or ethical leadership. The metaphor of light and shadow drama- tizes the differences between moral and immoral leaders. Leaders have the power to illuminate the lives of followers or to cover them in darkness. They cast light when they master ethical challenges of leadership. They cast shadows when they (1) abuse power, (2) hoard privileges, (3) mismanage information, (4) act incon- sistently, (5) misplace or betray loyalties, and (6) fail to assume responsibilities. A Dramatic Difference/The Dark Side of Leadership In an influential essay titled “Leading From Within,” educational writer and consultant Parker Palmer introduces a powerful metaphor to dramatize the distinction between ethical and unethical leadership. According to Palmer, the difference between moral and immoral leaders is as sharp as the contrast between light and darkness, between heaven and hell: A leader is a person who has an unusual degree of power to create the conditions under which other people must live and move and have their being, conditions that can be either as illuminating as heaven or as shadowy as hell. A leader must take special responsibility for what’s going on inside his or her own self, inside his or her consciousness, lest the act of leadership create more harm than good.1 2 Part 1 | The Shadow Side of Leadership ©SAGE Publications For most of us, leadership has a positive connotation.
