(September 20, 2012) – The Ward Irish Music Archives and Milwaukee Irish Fest will commemorate the life of Gene Kelly, the Irish-American dancer, actor, singer, director, producer and choreographer, best known for his performances in “Singin’ in the Rain” and “An American in Paris” with a signature event emceed by Chicago Tribune film critic, Michael J. Phillips. Kelly would have turned 100 this year while “Singin’ in the Rain” celebrates its 60th anniversary. The event takes place on Saturday, October 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Cudahy Hall on the Marquette University campus, 1313 West Wisconsin Avenue. The evening will include a reception, a panel discussion on America’s greatest song and dance man and viewing of “Singin’ in the Rain.” “This will be a compelling event for musicians, historians, students, film buffs and all those with a passion for Irish and Irish American entertainment,” said Jeff Ksiazek, archivist at the Milwaukee-based Ward Irish Music Archives, home to the largest public collection of Irish and Irish-American music in America. A descendant of Irish immigrants, Gene Kelly was born Eugene Curran Kelly on August 23, 1912. Kelly was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style, his good looks and the likeable characters that he played on screen. He was a dominant force in Hollywood musical films from the mid 1940s until this art form fell out of fashion in the late 1950s. His many innovations transformed Hollywood musical film, and he is credited with almost single-handedly making the ballet form commercially acceptable to film audiences. Kelly was the recipient of an Academy Honorary Award in 1952 for his career achievements. He later received lifetime achievement awards in the Kennedy Center Honors, and from the Screen Actors Guild and American Film Institute; in 1999, the American Film Institute also numbered him 15th in their Greatest Male Stars of All Time list. About Debbie Reynolds and Unsinkable The definitive memoir by legendary actress and performer Debbie Reynolds—an entertaining and moving story of enduring friendships and unbreakable family bonds, of hitting bottom and rising to the top again—that offers a unique and deeply personal perspective on Hollywood and its elite, from the glory days of MGM to the present. In the closing pages of her 1988 autobiography Debbie: My Life , Debbie Reynolds wrote about finding her "brave, loyal, and loving" new husband. After two broken marriages, this third, she believed, was her lucky charm. But within a few years, Debbie discovered that he had betrayed her emotionally and financially, nearly destroying her life. Today, she writes, "When I read the optimistic ending of my last memoir now, I can't believe how naive I was when I wrote it. In Unsinkable, I look back at the many years since then, and share my memories of a film career that took me from the Miss Burbank Contest of 1948 to the work I did in 2012. To paraphrase Bette Davis: Fasten your seatbelts, I've had a bumpy ride." Unsinkable shines a spotlight on the resilient woman whose talent and passion for her work have endured for more than six decades.

  • The Lack of Recognition for the Film Choreographer in Hollywood
Pace University DigitalCommons@Pace Honors College Theses Pforzheimer Honors College 6-2020 The Lack of Recognition for the Film Choreographer in Hollywood Claire Ross Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.pace.edu/honorscollege_theses Part of the Dance Commons, and the Film and Media Studies Commons The Lack of Recognition for the Film Choreographer in Hollywood Claire Ross Commercial Dance Major Art & Entertainment Management Minor Virginia Cox, MS Dyson College of Arts and Sciences Presentation Date: June 2020 Graduation Date: May 2020 1 Abstract The following research directly addresses why the film choreographer has lacked adequate recognition within the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Additionally, this study aims to fill the research gap in relation to the minimal documentation that exists regarding the role and contributions of the film choreographer within the film industry. In order to move forward in assessing how the film choreographer can be recognized within the Oscars, one must address why they have not been sufficiently recognized within the history of the Academy Awards. By assessing the film choreographer’s value within the film industry through semi-structured interviews and data analysis methodologies, it was concluded their lack of recognition within the Oscars is due to the lack of dance’s presence in film, the undefined role of a film choreographer, and the general lack of awareness revolving around their contributions to film. All of which directly contribute to the film choreographer’s disproportionately perceived value within the film industry. Overall, this research intends to increase the dialogue revolving around the film choreographer as well as validate their value within the film industry.

DiMusicalscussion Guide forMovi 1920s-30se MusicMemories Run film segments one at a time on a TV or projection system. Pause on the 4 questions at the end of each so the viewers can respond and share their memories woken by the film. This Discussion Guide suggests additional questions to aid the session leader. All films in this special program are filled with music, singers and bands from the late 1920s through the 1930s. Music has proven helpful in bringing smiles and distant memories even to seniors with alzheimers. Unlike regular volumes of Movie Memories with their vast variety, there may not be that much to discuss with some of the films. You can tell by reactions whether the viewers enjoy the films. Standard questions which can be applied to each segment are: Did you like the song? Do you like jazz and swing bands? Do you remember ___________? Would you like to watch the film again? What is your favorite song from this era? Do you want to see more Bing Crosby musicals? Etc. Do not hesitate to ask these simple questions again and again! Disc #1 Al Jolson Trailers We just watched coming attractions for 3 Al Jolson films: Wonder Bar (1934), Go Into Your Dance (1935) and The Singing Kid (1936). These “trailers” showed the highlights of three of Al’s films from the mid-1930s. Have you ever see the first sound film -- The Jazz Singer -- with Al Jolson on TV? Do the trailers make you want to see the complete movies? Who are your favorite singers, stars or dancers from 1930s Hollywood musicals? Glorifying the American Girl This 1929 musical comedy was produced by Florenz Ziegfeld and highlights Ziegfeld’s current star, dancer Mary Eaton.

  • Bamcinématek Presents the Complete Vincente Minnelli, the First
BAMcinématek presents The Complete Vincente Minnelli, the first full New York retrospective of the Hollywood master in more than 20 years, Sep 23—Nov 2 (32 days, 35 films) 35mm prints. The Wall Street Journal is the BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas sponsor. Brooklyn, NY/Aug 30, 2011— Beginning September 23 and continuing through November 2, BAMcinématek presents The Complete Vincente Minnelli, the first full New York retrospective of the Hollywood master in more than two decades. This 35-film series pays homage to one of the all-time great Hollywood directors, with a career that included successful forays into the musical (which earned him his reputation at MGM), subversive and deeply personal melodramas and sensitive biopics, and airy comedies. The retrospective, presented in conjunction with the Locarno International Film Festival, offers a chance to reevaluate the Hollywood giant’s status as an auteur, truly one of cinema’s greatest artists. All films in The Complete Vincente Minnelli will be projected in 35mm, except for one which will be shown in 16mm. Popularly associated with meticulously decorated, nostalgic musicals like Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), The Band Wagon (1953), and the beloved Gigi (which swept the 1959 Oscars, winning in all nine categories that it was nominated including Best Picture and Best Director), Minnelli also proved to be a master of multiple genres over his 34-year directing career, including several darker dramas that were under- appreciated by his contemporaries. Minnelli was as poetically cynical as Billy Wilder in the Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner vehicle The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and its follow-up, Two Weeks in Another Town (1960).
