Chapter The Contribution of Javanese Pharmacognosy to Suriname’s Traditional Medicinal Pharmacopeia: Part 1 Dennis R.A. Mans, Priscilla Friperson, Meryll Djotaroeno and Jennifer Pawirodihardjo Abstract The Republic of Suriname (South America) is among the culturally, ethnically, and religiously most diverse countries in the world. Suriname’s population of about 600,000 consists of peoples from all continents including the Javanese who arrived in the country between 1890 and 1939 as indentured laborers to work on sugar cane plantations. After expiration of their five-year contract, some Javanese returned to Indonesia while others migrated to The Netherlands (the former colonial master of both Suriname and Indonesia), but many settled in Suriname. Today, the Javanese community of about 80,000 has been integrated well in Suriname but has preserved many of their traditions and rituals. This holds true for their language, religion, cul- tural expressions, and forms of entertainment. The Javanese have also maintained their traditional medical practices that are based on Jamu. Jamu has its origin in the Mataram Kingdom era in ancient Java, some 1300 years ago, and is mostly based on a variety of plant species. The many Jamu products are called jamus. The first part of this chapter presents a brief background of Suriname, addresses the history of the Surinamese Javanese as well as some of the religious and cultural expressions of this group, focuses on Jamu, and comprehensively deals with four medicinal plants that are commonly used by the Javanese. The second part of this chapter continues with an equally extensive narrative of six more such plants and concludes with a few remarks on the contribution of Javanese jamus to Suriname’s traditional medicinal pharmacopeia. -

Calcium Crystals in the Leaves of Some Species of Moraceae

The type, morphology, and distribution of calcium oxalate and calcium carbonate crystals in mature leaves of nine species (eight genera) of Moraceae were studied. All the studied species contain calcium crystals. Based on types of crystals, these species can be classified into three groups: (a) species with only calcium oxalate: Artocarpus altilis and Cudrania cochinchinensis; (b) species with only calcium carbonate: Fatoua pilosa and Humulus scandens; and, (c) species with both calcium oxalate and calcium carbonate: Broussonetia papyrifera, Ficus elastica, Ficus virgata, Malaisia scandens, and Morus australis. The calcium oxalate crystals were mainly found as druses or pris- matic crystals. Druses were located in the crystal cells of both mesophyll and bundle sheath, but prismatic crystals were found only in cells of the bundle sheath. All calcium carbonate cystoliths were located in the epidermal lithocysts, and the types of lithocysts were related to the number of epidermal layers, i.e. hair-like lithocysts in uniseriate epi- dermis and papillate lithocysts in multiseriate epidermis. ABSTRAK Acanthaceae merupakan famili tumbuhan angiosperma di bawah order Lamiales yang terdiri daripada sekurang- kurangnya 4000 spesies sama ada spesies tropika atau subtropika. Spesies daripada famili ini ditemui di pelbagai habitat dan mempunyai pelbagai morfologi serta corak taburan geografi. Walau bagaimanapun, maklumat mengenai ciri anatomi bagi Acanthaceae masih dangkal sehingga ke hari ini. Objektif kajian ini ialah untuk mengenal pasti jenis trikom yang hadir pada permukaan epidermis adaksial dan abaksial sepal dan juga petal bunga bagi beberapa spesies terpilih daripada Acanthaceae di Semenanjung Malaysia. Kajian ini melibatkan pengumpulan sampel di lapangan, penyediaan spesimen baucer, teknik kajian epidermis petal, cerapan di bawah mikroskop cahaya dan juga cerapan di bawah mikroskop imbasan elektron. Tiga puluh jenis trikom dicerap dalam kajian ini dan daripada jumlah tersebut, 23 jenis trikom dicerap hadir pada permukaan epidermis petal manakala 17 jenis trikom dicerap hadir pada permukaan epidermis sepal. Jenis trikom yang direkodkan ialah trikom ringkas unisel dan ringkas multisel, trikom kelenjar kapitat dan kelenjar peltat serta juga trikom berlengan. Keputusan kajian ini menunjukkan kehadiran dan jenis trikom pada permukaan sepal dan petal mempunyai nilai taksonomi yang berguna untuk tujuan pembezaan dan pengecaman spesies. Maklumat ciri morfologi trikom yang diperoleh daripada kajian ini merupakan maklumat baharu ciri anatomi bunga bagi Acanthaceae. El material vegetal fue recolectado en Córdoba, Colombia. Se realizaron disociaciones epidérmicas y cortes transversales de la lámina media mediante técnicas histológicas convencionales. Los caracteres evaluados, forma y el contorno de las células epidérmicas, indumento aracnoideo abaxial, organización de las células de la base de los tricomas, idioblastos epidérmicos, tipo y distribución de los estomas, mostraron diferencias que permiten separar a C. membranacea de la otras especies. Las especies C. longipes y C. peltata son similares en la anatomía de la lámina foliar, sin embargo, es posible distinguirlas teniendo en cuenta la epidermis pluriestratificada y la proporción del parénquima clorofiliano, aunque estas características no se presentaron en todas las muestras. -

A b s t r a c t K e y w o r d s Kilcheruvi (Edaicheruvi) Aiyanar and Mariyamman Sacred Grove (KISG) which belongs to the tropical dry evergreen forest. Geographically, it lies between Tholuthur Aiyanar to Tittakudi (079°04.947' E longitude and 11°24.320' N latitude) in the Cuddalore APG III district and was explored for floristic studies which was reported for the first time in the year 2013-2014. The study indicated that totally, 185 plant species belonging to Biodiversity 158 genera and 58 families from 29 orders were enumerated in this sacred grove and Kilcheruvi (Edaicheruvi) followed by Angiosperm phylogeny Group III classification. The most dominant families found were Fabaceae (24), Apocynaceae (13), Malvaceae (9), Rubiaceae (8), Sacred Grove Convolvulaceae (8) and Rutaceae (8) species. Rich biodiversity is present in the sacred Tropical dry evergreen grove. This has ensured the protection and conservation of the vegetation of the sacred forests grove. Introduction associated with extensive forest cover, most are found in intimate association with at least a small grove of plants. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT We investigated the vascular plant species composition of homegardens maintained by the Kani tribe of Kanyakumari wildlife sanctuary and encountered 368 plants belonging to 290 genera and 98 families, which included 118 tree species, 71 shrub species, 129 herb species, 45 climber and 5 twiners. The study reveals that these gardens provide medicine, timber, fuelwood and edibles for household consumption as well as for sale. We conclude that these homestead agroforestry system serve as habitat for many economically important plant species, harbour rich biodiversity and mimic the natural forests both in structural composition as well as ecological and economic functions.
