"30 SOMETHING"

Shaun P. Davis , Executive Director of South Regional Planning Commission hosted an informative "30 Something" on July 23rd. The Commission operates the 211 call center staffed by caseworkers who are trained to match caller's needs with community providers and services. 211 also registers special needs clients (and their pets) for hurricane evacuation and tracks them with an id bracelet so no one gets lost. The Commission has the only substance abuse network in the state and was recently granted an extension to continue that service. Coming soon are local health clinics that will include dental services for those in need and community development block grant money that will aid victims of Hurricane Ike in completing repairs to their homes.

Rotarians in attendance were: John Neely, Shaun P. Davis, Gail Davis, John Weitzel, Cindy Cherry, Dayna Simmons, Ken Arola, Slate Babineaux, Pat Anderson, Chris Ayers, Bobbie Applegate, Marilyn Smith and Brenda Gray.

Thank you to, Shaun Davis for hosting our "30 Something" this month, and thank you to, Cindy Cherry for being our Editor. GREAT JOB!

REVIEW OF JOHN NEWHOUSE II JULY 22, 2009

Our speaker today was John E. Newhouse II, Publisher of the Beaumont Enterprise. Evelyn Lord introduced our speaker as a 6-times Paul Harris Fellow !!!!!

John stated that although he loves to speak from the heart, today he will stick to his notes & his Power Point presentation. John gave recognition to several key Enterprise staff members, in attendance.

Established in 1880, John stated that numerous newspaper organizations across the Nation are having difficulties, but that this is NOT the case, with the Beaumont Enterprise: "This is not a pity party....the Enterprise is alive, well, and profitable."

John highlighted several changes that have been made, to keep the Enterprise competitive & healthy: > deletion of the TV section > strategic reductions in staffing > Enterprise printing responsibilities have been shifted to Houston, after Hurricanes Rita & Ike John went on to say that in spite of some declines, over the past year, advertizing is increasing in most areas: > Real Estate have grown 30% > Internet sales are expected to reach 20% increase by 2010 Readers still trust & rely on the Beaumont Enterprise, for their news and their connection to the Community . In closing, John stated "The Beaumont Enterprise will be around to announce his obituary, as well as ours.....but it will NOT publish its own."
