I started the Anita Blake series knowing what I was getting into. I had heard the bad buzz, but I also heard that the earlier books were solid good urban fantasy badass heroine writing. And I gotta say, that is true. I loved the first 10 books in the Anita Blake series. Loved them. The world LKH created in the book is damned scary, Vampire Hunter Novel and surprising. I enjoyed the Vampire Hunter Novel of Anita from the first few books through books Anita progressed, the Vampire Hunter Novel gr I started the Anita Blake series knowing what I was getting into. Anita progressed, Vampire Hunter Novel characters grew on me and LKH often scared me senseless with her gory and gruesome stories. I am hugely happy that I enjoyed 10 books in the Anita Blake series. So I am not disappointed that I started it the series. Additionally, there have been no cliff hangers, so it is fine to just walk away. And that is what I am going to do. I am going to walk away from Anita Blake because Cerulean Sins is a disappointing read. It is disappointing on so many levels, but mainly I had grown to really like Anita as a character and she is no longer what she was in the first part of the series. What was the plot of this book? Well, there is no true plot per se, perhaps I am just being a stickler for literary guidelines, but there were definitely themes! Here are the ones I identified: 1. Visiting super strong vamp. The visiting vamp wants to control Anita. Hmm, I know I have read this one before. Anita protects her people and pisses off the visiting vamp. Yes, yes, you know this already BUT she does the pissing off in a really new and different way — she has sex with the person she is trying to protect. The cops Anita works with give her a hard time and yell at her. They harass her at the crime scenes. Why does she continue to go when Vampire Hunter Novel call her? How many years has this harassment and belittlement been going on? Some bodies are being raised, some general people in the background hate Anita.

  • ABVH 02 the Laughing
The Laughing Corpse by Laurell K. Hamilton Book 2 of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series Chapter 1 Harold Gaynor's house sat in the middle of intense green lawn and the graceful sweep of trees. The house gleamed in the hot August sunshine. Bert Vaughn, my boss, parked the car on the crushed gravel of the driveway. The gravel was so white, it looked like handpicked rock salt. Somewhere out of sight the soft whir of sprinklers pattered. The grass was absolutely perfect in the middle of one of the worst droughts Missouri has had in over twenty years. Oh, well. I wasn't here to talk with Mr. Gaynor about water management. I was here to talk about raising the dead. Not resurrection. I'm not that good. I mean zombies. The shambling dead. Rotting corpses. Night of the living dead. That kind of zombie. Though certainly less dramatic than Hollywood would ever put up on the screen. I am an animator. It's a job, that's all, like selling. Animating had only been a licensed business for about five years. Before that it had just been an embarrassing curse, a religious experience, or a tourist attraction. It still is in parts of New Orleans, but here in St. Louis it's a business. A profitable one, thanks in large part to my boss. He's a rascal, a scalawag, a rogue, but damn if he doesn't know how to make money. It's a good trait for a business manager. Bert was six-three, a broad-shouldered, ex-college football player with the beginnings of a beer gut.

  • Narratives in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake
Monsters, sex, and (dis)ease: Exploring HIV/AIDS-‘positive’ narratives in Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. Dissertation Proposal submitted by Jennifer Dumoulin Ph.D. Candidate Department of Communication Supervised by Professor Florian Grandena University of Ottawa January 2019 Abstract In the world of Anita Blake, vampires, werewolves, and zombies don’t just hide in their coffins. Among other things, they go to school, have steady jobs, run successful businesses, give witness testimony, and have romantic relationships. And yet, preternatural characters are treated differently from – and by – the human characters in the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. They’re often feared and treated as dangerous, viewed as a disease and as contaminated, and seen as something to be controlled or exterminated. The treatment of preternatural characters in the Anita Blake series seems, on the surface, to parallel the treatment of people living with disability, disease, and illness in the real-world, and in particular, people living with HIV/AIDS. This similarity is, in and of itself, not surprising – many scholars have called attention to similarities between HIV/AIDS and vampires, werewolves, and zombies in the context of disease transmission, bodily transformation, and identity metamorphosis. Despite this differential, discriminatory, and stigmatizing treatment, many preternatural characters in the world of Anita Blake do not merely survive, they thrive. Using the Anita Blake series as its lens, this study examines how the series contributes to the HIV/AIDS narrative and, ultimately, what we can learn from it in the context of changing perceptions around how we as a society and as individuals treat people living with disability, disease and illness.
