De BEZIGE BI] Utrecht, 1943-45. This imprint and its equivalents The Busy Bee, L'abeille laborante, De doezende dar, Wed. de Bye, denote a publishing venture which was among the most outstanding during the war, both for the contents and for the physical appearance of its output. It is also the only major Dutch publishing house which, established for the purpose of spreading clan• destine printing, survived the war and entered upon a flourishing future in peace time with an organisation based on the document drawn up in 1944, no. Pll. It was founded by Geertjan Lubberhuizen and Charles Eugene Blommestein, both studying law at Utrecht University. When students at all Dutch universities and technical colleges were required to sign a declaration of loyalty to the Occupation regime they, like others, refused to do so and were therefore unable to continue. Already parti• cipating in Resistance activities, they now devoted themselves wholly to these, and Lubberhuizen's energetic movements on behalf of Jewish chil-· dren whom he successfully placed with Christian families in the country, earned him the nickname, in English, of The Busy Bee. To raise money towards the maintenance of these children saved from deportation the two students conceived the idea of publishing Jan Campert's poem The eighteen dead as a "rijmprent", single sheet illustrated verse, no. Cl. It was a particularly good choice. Hitherto it had been passed from hand to hand in handwriting or in typescript or stencilled form; now, printed and illustrated with care, the broadside sold beyond all expectation and had to be reprinted repeatedly as well as being printed by other publish• ers. This success persuaded the two men to continue publishing for the benefit of the Resistance. The works that bear their imprints clearly re• flect this close connection. They excelled in the "rijmprenten", many of which feature Resistance poems, and in fine printing. The series "Quousque tandem" was specially designed to help victims of persecu• tion, and the authors and artists gave their work to it. The three war• time issues of the small-size series "Documents humains" brought to• gether the expression of past, present and future political ideals. The Vrij Nederlandsch liedboek is a large though not complete collection of Resistance poetry and is the most beautifully printed and produced of all such collections published during the war, no. V3. The efforts of The Busy Bee enriched the finances of the Resistance by fl. 800,000, a sum at that time equivalent to roughly £ 80,000. After employing a variety PUBLISHERS' INDEX 235 of printers, mainly at Utrecht, among whom Jan Hendriks is perhaps the most important, and elsewhere, such as Fokke Tamminga at The Hague, D.A.V.I.D. at Amsterdam and H.N. Werkman at Groningen, they used the money made from the sale of one book, Sjoerd Leiker's Drie getui• gen, no. L14, to acquire a printing press of their own. Repeated attempts by the police to discover The Busy Bee failed although on one occasion the printers and typographer working for them on the translation of Ver• cors' Le silence de la mer were surprised during a raid on their premises and summarily shot. At the end of the war The Busy Bee established it• self at Amsterdam. De BLAUWE SCHUlT Groningen and Heerenveen, 1940-44. "The Blue Ship" was founded and directed by Adriana Buning, F .R.A. Henkels and A.J. Zuithoff: a schoolmistress, a clergyman and a chemist, and had as its printer H.N. Werkman at Groningen. It came into being as a spontaneous expression of spiritual Resistance in June 1940 when Miss Buning came across a newspaper cutting she had preserved, quite against her usual custom, of Martinus Nijhoff's poem Het jaar 1542 and made enquiries about getting it reprinted. With the assistance of F.R.A. Henkels who visited and secured the cooperation of H.N. Werkman, the piece was published, no. N16. They chose the name of The Blue Ship in allusion to Erasmus' ship of fools, the Blue Ship of those who belonged to no guild - or Chamber of Culture - which Henkels remembered 236 PUBLISHERS' INDEX having seen depicted in a painting by Hieronymus Bosch. The name also recalled some lines in a poem of Jacob van Oostvoorne called Song of the Blue Ship's Crew which are printed on the inside front cover of the Turkenkalender, no. T13, and which can be translated as "Sleep not, oh God, but take our helm, preserve us from all that would do us harm, whether it Satan be or Turk, sickness or dreams, vain thought or yet in• ternal strife". Subscribers to their publications are referred to in the col• ophons as "Friends of The Blue Ship", Henkels is described in them as "one of the skippers of the Blue Ship", and Martinus Nijhoff whose per• mission to reprint the earlier poems they sought belatedly in 1941 and who became fIrmly attached to the enterprise, is described similarly as "the poet of the Blue Ship". In 1946 F.R.A. Henkels brought out a booklet describing the history and publications of The Blue Ship, Log• hoek van de Blauwe Schuit, and in 1968 the Arbeiderspers, Amsterdam, published a selection of Werkman's letters written during the war, Brie• ven van H.N. Werkman 1940-1945, edited by J. Martinet, which throw much light on this publishing venture. No. B32, 33; C3; H20, 29-36; L26-28; M13; N12, 14-17; P19; R6; T11, 13; V16, 40.

FLAKKEESCHE DRUKKERIJ J. & M. BOOMSMA Middelharnis, 1944. In 1934 the firm was in the hands of the twin brothers Han and Rien Boomsma of whom Han was compositor and Rien printer. For financial reasons they had to give up printing the lotal paper in 1936 and took up publishing instead. They came into contact with the publishing house Spectrum of Utrecht which asked them to print clandestine editions during the war. They also printed forged identity papers, especially the documents exempting bearers from deportation to Germany. They also printed for the German army one of their cypher codes and managed to hide a copy and to have it transmitted to England. But their attempt to do the same with the supplement to this code was spotted and they were nearly shot then and there and were only saved because Han pro• tested that he was only trying to proofread the sheet he had in his pos• session and this was corroborated as normal practice by one of the sol- PUBLISHERS' INDEX 243 diers present who was himself a printer. ROMI]N,]ACOBPIETER Utrecht, 1943-45. For biographical data see author catalogue. His aim in clandestine pub• lications was to help living authors and artists whose work was no longer allowed to be published unless they submitted to the regulations of the regime. He published very small books of particularly good design and two "rijmprenten", both in the British Museum collection. His aversion to other than pre-war established pseudonyms rebounded on himself when, after being warned by a former friend then employed by the De• partment of Information that he would have to cease publishing or get into serious trouble after earlier reprimands had evidently had no effect, he adopted the pseudonym Willem I ndenhae ( c)k both for a work of his 260 PUBLISHERS' INDEX own and for his imprint which he also gave the false place name of Stadskanaal. STOLS, ALEXANDER ALPHONSE MARIUS The Hague, 1943-45. For biographical data and list of works printed to his typographical de• sign see entry in author catalogue. For his own clandestine publications he used not only his own name as imprint, or published them anony• mously, but invented a number of fictitious imprints of Dutch and for• eign, past and present places and dates, not all of them represented in the British Museum collection. Imprints to be found there are: Gerard Leeu, Gouda; Gerard Leempt, 's-Hertogenbosch; S. Sanders, Bergen-aan• Zee; Somerset Press, Sidcot; Les amis danois de Maxime Clare moris, Co• penhagen; Editions Paul Demeny-Fils, Douai; Halewynpers, together with Fokke Tamminga, The Hague; and his most famous false imprint, Pierre Mangart, Rosieres (Picardie). Some of the printers named in colophons are equally fictitious, Jens Skovgaard, Copenhagen, hiding the printing house of Boosten & Stols, Maastricht, Jean Nicolle, Louviers, that of Meijer's Boek- en Handelsdrukkerij, Wormerveer, and Claude Sezille, Paris, the firm Trio, The Hague. The pretended French imprint was so successful that the story is told of a French friend of Stols remarking to him on the quality of these books, revealing such a similarity of design to his own books and asking whether Stols knew Mangart and could arrange a meeting with this admirer, whereupon Stols is said to have bowed saying, he is standing before you. TAMMINGA, FOKKE The Hague, 1943-45. Pro His business was closed by the Germans for no better reason than that there were too many printers working already. His machinery was later supposed to be taken over by a bombed-out printer at Aachen. He con• tinued to print all through the war behind closed shutters and prevented the take-over of his presses by sheer determination. He printed several underground newspapers which were distributed free and made a living from the finely printed clandestine books he produced. He was a partner with A.A.M. Stols in the Halewynpers and with Bert Bakker and C.A.B. Bantzinger in the Tababapers and the Mansarde Pers, later Final Stage Press, the names suggested by the attic in which they met and the hope in 1944 of having reached the final stage of the war. He printed also for other publishers such as The Busy Bee, D.A. Daamen, K.H. Heeroma, Knock-out-Press, A.A.M. Stols, Vrij Nederland and Pulvis Viarum. The sugges- PUBLISHERS' INDEX 267 tion for the series and the choice of texts came from Wytze Hellinga, the commercial side was seen to by the bookseller and publisher A.A.
