The database makes it possible to order references to an object in many ways including in terms of dedication, location, date, and possible authenticity, and it makes data available to derive some history of the object in order to assess the reliability of the information it presents.

  • Palaeolithic and Pleistocene Sites of the Mendip, Bath and Bristol Areas
Proc. Univ. Bristol Spelacol. Soc, 19SlJ, 18(3), 367-389 PALAEOLITHIC AND PLEISTOCENE SITES OF THE MENDIP, BATH AND BRISTOL AREAS RECENT BIBLIOGRAPHY by R. W. MANSFIELD and D. T. DONOVAN Lists of references lo works on the Palaeolithic and Pleistocene of the area were published in these Proceedings in 1954 (vol. 7, no. 1) and 1964 (vol. 10, no. 2). In 1977 (vol. 14, no. 3) these were reprinted, being then out of print, by Hawkins and Tratman who added a list ai' about sixty papers which had come out between 1964 and 1977. The present contribution is an attempt to bring the earlier lists up to date. The 1954 list was intended to include all work before that date, but was very incomplete, as evidenced by the number of older works cited in the later lists, including the present one. In particular, newspaper reports had not been previously included, but are useful for sites such as the Milton Hill (near Wells) bone Fissure, as are a number of references in serials such as the annual reports of the British Association and of the Wells Natural History and Archaeological Society, which are also now noted for the first time. The largest number of new references has been generated by Gough's Cave, Cheddar, which has produced important new material as well as new studies of finds from the older excavations. The original lists covered an area from what is now the northern limit of the County of Avon lo the southern slopes of the Mendips. Hawkins and Tratman extended that area to include the Quaternary Burtle Beds which lie in the Somerset Levels to the south of the Mendips, and these are also included in the present list.

  • The Barrington Papers the Barrington Papers
The Barrington Papers The Barrington Papers Delia Barrington’s notes on Binegar’s history 1 The Barrington Papers Introduction to Delia Barrington, 1912-1991 Delia Barrington (née Parker) was born in 1912 in Kensington, London and the family then moved to Ealing where she spent the early years of her life. She was of Huguenot descent through her father's side of the family and a member of the Huguenot Society of London for most of her life. Sometime between 1934 and '37, when she was in her mid-twenties, she enjoyed working, along with a number of other volunteers, for the archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler who was excavating the site of the Iron Age Hill Fort at Maiden Castle in Dorset. This was the start of her interest in archaeology and a development of her interest and involvement in local history: something that was to remain with her throughout her life. She joined the Women's Land Army during the Second World War, working on a farm in Buckinghamshire. The hours were long and the work hard but she found it rewarding and made many friends. In 1941, she met the chauffeur of exiled King Zog of Albania who was living nearby. The story goes that she was courted by him, not with flowers but with kippers, which were left for her by the farm gates! These tactics were obviously successful because at the end of the war she and the chauffeur (William Barrington) were married. In the late 1940s, Delia and William went to Holsworthy in Devon where they ran a farm together but after a few years decided that it was not the life for them and they moved to Bristol where William was employed, once again, as a chauffeur until his retirement.

Clearly not everyone has cars, particularly young people who might be attending efficient use of one college, working in part-time jobs, or simply socialising. vehicle so service reduction will not make I think we must do all we can to retain links to villages, at any time of the day/evening. If not, we are significant savings simply storing up trouble for the future in terms of isolation. If the services would definitely be withdrawn by the operator if the subsidy ceased (a point which A fares increase would need to recover needs to be explored) then we should look at the possibility of slightly higher fares, or perhaps £1.89/trip Allowing for reducing the service further. ENCTS an increase of Also however we should look at whether the timings are optimal. Could they be adjusted to make £4.80 return would be them more attractive - e.g.: departures from Bath at 20.XX and 22.XX? required Although 85% of passengers might not live in B&NES, they are still doing their bit for the Bath economy. The Parish Council expresses the view that the existing bus services should be continued and B&NES Parish Westfield Parish Council supported.
