    Rick George was named athletic director at the University of Colorado on July 17, 2013, returning to Boulder where he helped play a role in the school’s first and only national championship in football some 23 years earlier. George, 59, came to Colorado from the Texas Rangers baseball club of the American League, where he was named chief operating officer on October 5, 2010 with a promotion to president of business operations in February 2013. He agreed to a 5-year contract at CU, and he officially started on the job on August 12, 2013. In June 2016, the Board of Regents approved a contract extension through 2020-21, and in June 2019, the Regents once again extended him through the 2023-24 academic and athletic year. He is just the sixth full-time athletic director in Colorado history, following in the footsteps of Harry Carlson (1927-65), Eddie Crowder (1965-84), Bill Marolt (1984-96), Dick Tharp (1996- 2004) and Mike Bohn (2005-13). Two others have bridged directors in interim capacities, Jack Lengyel (six months between Tharp and Bohn) and Ceal Barry (two months between Bohn and George). His list of achievements in his first 1,000 days in the position were many, but none more significant than shepherding through a $156 million Athletic Complex Expansion from creation through fruition, gaining approval from the Board of Regents and then raising nearly one-half of the estimated cost to initiate construction, which began May 12, 2014. The project was the core of the Sustainable Excellence Initiative (SEI), the jewel of which was a long-awaited indoor practice facility.

    The Hall of Honor and the Move to Tier One Athletics By Debbie Z. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. It went undefeated for the season, scoring three goals to every one for its opponents. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. Fouke as athletic director. He added coaches in men’s tennis, golf, track, football, and basketball, and a new director of women’s athletics focused on physical education.     COACHING STAFF MARK DANTONIO HEAD COACH SEVENTH SEASON @DANTONIOMARK Mark Dantonio, who is in his seventh season as head coach at Michigan State, has restored the pride and tradi- tion of Spartan football while transforming the program into an annual Big Ten Championship contender. A Zanesville, Ohio, native with Midwest ties, Dantonio has led Michigan State this season to a school-record 12 victories, the Big Ten Championship, and a trip to the Rose Bowl for the fi rst time since 1988. After lead- ing the Spartans to their second Big Ten Legends Di- vision title in three years, Dantonio guided MSU past previously undefeated and second-ranked Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, 34-24, to win the school’s eighth Big Ten Championship and clinch the fi rst BCS Bowl bid in program history. Bowl eligible for a school-record seventh consecutive season, the Spartans fi nished fourth in the fi nal Bowl Championship Series standings, marking the highest BCS ranking in school history.
