From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath Date: February 7, 2017 at 8:49 AM To: [email protected] Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath By William May // Photo: Gabor Martin CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (January 31) – Rio 2016 champion Kyle SNYDER (USA) and bronze medalist Geno PETRIASHVILI (GEO) kicked off 2017 with victories at Grand Prix events, solidifying their claims to top positions in the United World Wrestling freestyle rankings for January. Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg.

  • Another Olympics Is Over for Wrestling by Olympic Champion John Peterson #42
Another Olympics is over for Wrestling By Olympic Champion John Peterson #42 The excitement is over, another Olympics is history. There were some great matches! Mindorashivili, of Georgia, pinning Russia’s returning World Champion, Georgy Ketoev, at 84kg. in the semi-finals caught my attention. Actually Ketoev is a Georgian, born in Tbilisi. With a war going on back home that had to have been an interesting match up! Athens champion, Taymazov, Uzbekistan became heavy weight champion again! He proved that he is the true champion by defeating Russian 2000 Olympic Champion David Mussulbes, now wrestling for Slovakia in the semi-finals and in the finals Russian Akhmedov, who beat last year’s World Champion to make the Russian Olympic team. They all are from the same area of the Caucuses. And what can you say about Buvaysa Saytiev? He won the World’s as a 19 year old in Atlanta. He joins the all time greats by winning his third Olympic Gold to go with his 6 World titles. That tall thin body proves again that anybody can win on the mat! Thank you Tony Black for helping us navigate through the system to be on the right mat at the right time. For those of us who are “computer challenged”, you made it easier to handle. I proved that I am still a wrestling fanatic by getting up at 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. to watch some of the wrestle-backs and finals. And how about Henry? Congratulations Henry Cejudo! Welcome to the club of Olympic champions! Thank you Terry Brands for pouring yourself into coaching in the same way you did as an athlete.

Thirty weight categories in three styles will be contested over seven days of competition. The Individual World Cup is serving as a substitute event for the 2020 World Championships. The event was canceled after not fulfilling the criteria set forth by the UWW Bureau. The criteria included having at least 8 of 10 of the top nations from the 2019 World Championships and 70% of total athletes participate in 2020. The Individual World Cup represents international wrestling's return to competition and will lay the groundwork for safety protocols and countermeasures around all competitions. This will be vital to ensure a safe environment for future competitions in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. The event has a prize pool of 300,000 Swiss Francs, which will be divided evenly across the 30 weight categories. Thirty-one returning world medalists, including five returning world champions, are entered in the field. TURKISH AND US PRESIDENTS MET IN OSAKA On June 28-29, Japanese city of Osaka hosted the G20 Summit. Along with the G20 heads of state, representatives from Spain, Singapore, Thailand, Egypt, Senegal, Chile, Vietnam and the Netherlands were also invited to the meeting in Osaka. The main outcomes of the G20 summit were meetings of leaders of Russia, the United States and China, discussion of issues on the START-3 Treaty and trade wars. Despite the lack of breakthrough solutions, forum participants confirmed their desire to continue improving the global trading system, including the WTO reform. In addition, the summit participants have concluded that it is necessary to resist the dissemination of information about terrorism through the Internet. According to a number of commentators, the G20 agenda itself has faded into the background - basically all attention has been focused on meetings of the leaders. In particular, the meeting of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump attracted much attention. Two leaders managed to reach agreement on a number of important issues of bilateral cooperation and regional policy. Following the meeting, R.T. Erdogan announced that D. Trump’s visit to Turkey was scheduled for July. PRESIDENT OF TURKMENISTAN VISITED TATARSTAN On June 23, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov paid a working visit to the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan. During his meeting with the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, promising areas of cooperation were discussed, and then a number of documents on cooperation and mutual understanding in the automotive, petrochemical and education sectors were signed in their presence.
