Kids today have no shortage of heroes. From Hollywood celebrities to music artists and sports figures, it would seem that there are plenty of heroes to go around. The heroes being offered by popular culture are teaching children that physical perfection, financial success, and fame are the most important goals in life. The morals and values presented by these heroes are often in direct opposition to the standards parents want to pass on to their children. So, while there is no shortage of heroes, there is a dreadful shortage of heroes worth emulating. -

2002 - Tom Tom Club's Christmas Stocking Stuffers Interview with ex-Talking Head and Tom Tom Club's Chris FrantzDec. 15, 2002 Just in time for the holiday season ex-Talking Heads turned Tom Tom Club alumni Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth are filling their fan's Christmas stockings with two new downloadable holiday chestnuts from their website, http://www.tomtomclub.net . Both Chris and Tina, along with David Byrne and Jerry Harrison were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, and while their work with the Talking Heads is what they may be best known for, the wedded couple have also, for the last twenty years, been busy making their own brand of uninhibited party music with their band Tom Tom Club. Surprisingly, its their own music with the Tom Tom Club, and not the Talking Heads, that has permeated itself into so many different styles of music over the past two decades, as their 1983 hit "Genius of Love" is the most sampled song of all time, with artists such as 2PAC, Ziggy Marley, the X-ecutioners and Mariah Carey either sampling bits or recreating the entire song. Livewire's Tony Bonyata caught up with Chris to talk about the Heads, the impact of Tom Tom Club, as well as their delightful new stocking stuffers. Livewire: I understand that you're giving your fans a couple of early Christmas presents on your web site this season. Chris: Yeah, we are. The first one, which is already posted on the homepage of our site, tomtomclub.com, is a very traditional, beautiful and kind of chilled-out French carol called "Il Est Ne," which is French for "He Is Born." It's very traditional, and I'm sure you'll recognize it when you hear the melody. -

1986 - Rock's Renaissance Man Written by Time From: Time magazine, October 27, 1986 Got a movie. Got a record. Got some wild, wild life. "Oh," David Byrne said, "you want to see the African fire ants?" It was deep night out on a Texas plain flat as a pan bottom and just about burned through. A recent rain had slaked the land a little but brought forth legions of ants to infest the ground and pester a nearby film set. Exterminators were summoned, ants dispatched, but one actor, arriving late, felt he had missed out on some fun. "Follow me," said Byrne sympathetically, as he grabbed a flashlight and walked into the dark. This is a man whose first great song was called Psycho Killer. A man who is the formative force behind Talking Heads, one of the decade's most formidable bands, a group responsible for the sweetest, strangest, funniest rock to roll over the '70s and nestle into the '80s. A man who should be hanging close to the set, seeing to the details of directing his first feature film, not striking out on some weird nocturnal expedition in search of hymenopterous marauders. He may not resemble the manic murderer in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but he will never be mistaken for Mark Trail either. Is this a man to follow into the night? No question. It took a while, and a little stumbling, but Byrne found what he was looking for. He stood near a mound of earth and shone his light down and waited. -

Gogan To Play Jewish Again: Roots, Counterculture, and the Klezmer Revival Claire Gogan ABSTRACT Klezmer, a type of Eastern European Jewish secular music brought to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century, originally functioned as accompaniment to Jewish wedding ritual celebrations. In the late 1970s, a group of primarily Jewish musicians sought inspiration for a renewal of this early 20th century American klezmer by mining 78 rpm records for influence, and also by seeking out living klezmer musicians as mentors. Why did a group of Jewish musicians in the 1970s through 1990s want to connect with artists and recordings from the early 20th century in order to “revive” this music? What did the music “do” for them and how did it contribute to their senses of both individual and collective identity? How did these musicians perceive the relationship between klezmer, Jewish culture, and Jewish religion? Finally, how was the genesis for the klezmer revival related to the social and cultural climate of its time? I argue that Jewish folk musicians revived klezmer music in the 1970s as a manifestation of both an existential search for authenticity, carrying over from the 1960s counterculture, and a manifestation of a 1970s trend toward ethnic cultural revival. -

Jesuit High School • Portland, Oregon • Summer 2009 Age Quod Agis Graduation Issue Michael Walczyk ‘09 plays the trumpt at a JHS band concert in spring 2009, the last concert for the seniors. Many seniors found a piece of music, taught it to the band, and directed the piece at the concert. Highlights included the use of a taiko drum in a Japanese folk song, violin players from the orchestra club, and choir students who added to the night’s unforgetable performance. The seniors presented Mr. Kato with a gift of a ham as their thanks for four years of patience, friendship, and donuts.
