Two-Time GRAMMY® Nominee 2 | SERAPHIC FIRE - 15th ANNIVERSARY Dear Friends,

Our 15th Anniversary is a culmination of Seraphic Fire’s indelible mark on South Florida. Through the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, we are excited to present a season that includes eight world premiere compositions by emerging and established American composers.

We begin this fall by presenting selections from ’ minimalist masterpiece Einstein on the Beach, featuring violinist Matthew Albert, co-founder of GRAMMY® award-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird and student of the original concertmaster from the opera’s premiere performance.

In November, you will hear the Requiem masses of Fauré and Duruflé with organist Nathan Laube in a tribute to French liberty and freedom, and a new piece by critically acclaimed composer, Douglas Cuomo. Finally, A Seraphic Fire Christmas promises to inspire and enrapture audiences with seasonal favorites and three new carol settings by Susan LaBarr.

Seraphic Fire is bringing the best of the world to South Florida, and the best of South Florida to the world. Thank you for being a part of the Seraphic Fire community.

My best,

I have had singing by Steven Sametz is a staple in the modern choral literature . The text, drawn from Ronald Blythe’s Akenfield, Portrait of an English Village, strikes the balance of the harshness and beauty of life – in the midst of despair, there is always singing .

Have you seen the white lily grow is the second song in The Hour Glass, a cycle of songs composed by Irving Fine on the poetry of Ben Johnson . This cycle is considered a hallmark composition of Fine’s career and a true showcase of virtuosity .

Cover me with the night, composed by Nadia Boulanger student Peter Klatzow, is a movement from his work Prayers and Dances of Praise from Africa. The piece was originally commissioned by the South African Music Rights Organization and is set to the text from Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s African Prayer Book.

Three Ostinati for Voice, composed by Seraphic Fire’s Founder and Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley, is a world premiere composition written for Seraphic Fire . This piece sets music to the text of poetry by Percy Bysshe Shelley and Sara Teasdale, while also drawing text and influence from an ancient Latin Hymn .

Christopher Theofanidis’ work, Four Levertov Settings, is another world premiere for Seraphic Fire, and set to four poems by Denise Levertov . This work features a soprano and violin soloist whose melodic lines intertwine throughout the piece .

Einstein on the Beach is the first of a trilogy of operas by Philip Glass about men who changed the world through the power of their ideas . All three operas are non-narrative in form and each has a subtext: science in Einstein, politics in Satyagraha (1980) and religion in Akhnaten (1983) . The five Knee Play sections in this opera act as interludes between sections of the opera and also begin and end the work . Glass assigns the vocalists numbers and syllables throughout, creating a hypnotic time-halting experience . Knee Play 4 is a virtuosic showcase of the violin accompanied by tenor voices . The Knee Plays from Einstein on the Beach serve as a landmark set of vocal works in the minimalist repertoire .

The singing . There was so much singing then And this was my pleasure, too . We all sang, the boys in the field, The chapels were full of singing . Here I lie: I have had pleasure enough; I have had singing .

Have you seen the white lily grow Irving Fine (1914-1962)

Have you seen the white lily grow, Before rude hands have touched it? Have you seen the fall of the snow Before the soil hath smutched it?

Have you felt the wool of beaver Or swan’s down ever? Have you tasted the bag of the bee? O so fair, O so soft, so sweet is she!

Have you heard the white lily grow?

Cover me with the night Peter Klatzow (b . 1945)

Come Lord, and cover me with the night Spread your grace over us . As you assured us you would do . Come Lord, come Lord . Your promises are more than all the stars in the sky . Your mercy is deeper than the night . Lord it will be cold, the night comes with its breath of death . Night comes, the end comes, you come . Lord we wait for you day and night . Lord we wait for you day and night, night and day .

Four Levertov Settings Christopher Theofanidis (b . 1967) *world premiere i . Unaccompanied Violinist, alone as on a martyr’s cross, you have forgotten us . It’s not always this way, I’ve seen plenty of others playing the audience along with the music; but you, exposed, tortured, ecstatic- should we not close our eyes? Have we the right to perceive the blindness of you, your white face, badly tailored suit, awkward stance and deeply erotic abandon, as well as to accept this intricate energy, this weight, this outpouring of light which Bach permits you to suffer, permits you to offer? ii . The Mystery of Deep Candor Intervals so frank, open and major as you like, rhythms a child could keep- Only Haydn dared make magic from such morning suns, roadside gold, each dandelion dipped in his elixir the secret depths of candor . iii . Bruckner Angel with heavy wings weathering the storm wracked air, listing heavenward .

12 | SERAPHIC FIRE - 15th ANNIVERSARY iv . One December Night… This I had not expected: the moon coming right into my kitchen, the full moon, gently bumping angles of furniture, seeming to like the round table but not resenting corners .

Somehow the moon filled all the space and yet left room for whatever was there already, including me, and for movement . Like a balloon, the moon stirred at a breath and unlike a balloon did not rise to the ceiling, but wandered as if sleep-walking, no more than a foot from the floor .

Music accompanied this lunar visitation - you would imagine harp or lute, but no, I’d say it was steel drums, played with an airy whispering touch . (Those scooped concavities might serve as moon-mirrors .) The greenish tint of white spider chrysanthemums resembled the moon’s color, but that was lighter, lighter .

I have been given much, but why this also? I was abashed . What grand gesture of welcome was I to make? I bowed, curtsied, but the modest moon appeared unaware of homage . I breathed, I gazed; and slowly, mildly, the moon hovered, touring stove and cupboards, bookshelves and sink, glimmering over a bowl of tangerines . And gently withdrew, just as I thought to summon courage to offer honey-mead or slivovitz .
