The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage.

Supplement to Veld & Flora, Vol. 93(4) December 2007 1 booklet3_FINAL_for print.indd 1 2007/11/02 10:50:33 AM FOREWORD The Botanical Society of South Africa (BotSoc) has been a partner and supporter of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and its forerunners for over 90 years. This supplement to Veld & Flora focuses on other “biodiversity” (birds, mammals, insects, etc.) rather than just our core interest, which is “plant diversity”. It is an example of BotSoc embracing the change which Dr Bruce McKenzie has come about since SANBI replaced its predecessor Executive Director, BotSoc the National Botanical Institute (NBI) and also supports one of the principles contained in BotSoc’s Centenary Charter (see Veld & Flora, March 2006) which outlines our commitment to supporting SANBI and its mandate. In this regard the BotSoc warmly welcomes the first CEO of SANBI, Dr Tanya Abrahamse, and looks forward to working with her and her team in tackling new challenges, some of which she has spelt out in her foreword to the supplement. Available online at www.sciencedirect.com South African Journal of Botany 74 (2008) 660–676 www.elsevier.com/locate/sajb A revision of Lebeckia sect. Lebeckia: The L. plukenetiana group (Fabaceae, Crotalarieae) ⁎ M.M. Le Roux, B.-E. Van Wyk Department of Botany and Plant Biotechnology, University of Johannesburg, P.O. Box 524, Auckland Park 2006, South Africa Received 17 November 2007; received in revised form 14 April 2008; accepted 16 April 2008 Abstract Lebeckia Thunb. section Lebeckia includes 14 species, all with phyllodinous, acicular leaves, that are endemic to the Cape Floristic Region. As part of a taxonomic study of the genus Lebeckia, the L. plukenetiana group of section Lebeckia has been revised. The species of this group have stipitate, flat fruit and a prostrate habit. A study of vegetative and reproductive morphology showed that six species can be recognised, two of which are here described as new: 1. L. brevipes M.M. le Roux and B.-E. Van Wyk sp. nov. (previously misidentified as L. longipes Bolus and L. pauciflora Eckl. and Zeyh.) which is easily recognised by the short stipe, elliptic, flat fruit, wing petals that are as long as the keel petal and an orbicular standard petal; 2. L. zeyheri M.M. le Roux and B.-E. Van Wyk sp. nov. (previously known as L. plukenetiana E. Mey. var. brachycarpa Harv.) which has subsessile, short fruit, wing petals that are as long as the keel petal and an orbicular standard petal. The correct nomenclature and typification of the species are presented, together with descriptions, diagnostic characters and distribution maps.

Kogelberg Nature Reserve is part of the Boland Mountain Complex, one of 8 protected areas forming part of the serial declaration of the Cape Floral Region (2004) as a World Heritage Site. However, currently only the Table Mountain Park section of the Cape Floral Region has been approved as a Grade 1 site, in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act (Act 25 of 1999), by the South African Heritage Resources Agency. Thus while the Reserve contains “uncommon, rare and endangered aspects of South Africa’s natural heritage” (Section 3(3)(b)) which is considered part of the National Estate, in terms of current legislation it has not been formally proposed as a Grade 1 site by either SAHRA or SAHRA Western Cape. Heritage Western Cape is therefore the commenting authority (see attached email comment from SAHRA and SAHRA Western Cape).
