What exactly have the UK’s latest gender pay gap revelations told us that is Seither surprising, or particularly new? Men earn more money than women at more than three quarters of companies, largely because men still hold more senior positions commanding the highest salaries. The real question is whether this situation is changing – and that’s something which the latest highly publicised pay revelations don’t really address. Under new legislation, all companies with 250 employees or more are now legally required to publish their gender pay gap. Failure to do so puts them at risk of legal action. More than 10,000 large firms have provided details of their gender pay gap, with 78% paying men more than women. The average pay differential between men and women has emerged as around 9.7%. In Shropshire, as in most parts of the UK, there are widely varying statistics from one industry to the next.     Days Out with a Religious Connection. South Shropshire – Farlow, Nash and Boraston. October is still a good month for touring churches. The weather, while quite cool, can still be bright, sunny and pleasant to walk around in if you pick the right day! Using our copy of ‘A Guide to Shropshire’s Churches’ by Shropshire Churches Tourism Group, we chose to visit a group of churches in South Shropshire, in the area around Titterstone Clee. St Giles, Farlow. Alas our first choice, Farlow, proved abortive. The church was locked - although the Guide says that there are ‘details of keyholders available’ we found none and had to content ourselves with viewing the wonderful countryside from the churchyard. A toposcope in the field by the churchyard, with a view of South Shropshire countryside in the distance. According to ‘British Listed Buildings’, St Giles is a parish church of 1857-1858 by architect Robert Griffiths, incorporating the font and 12th century doorway from a former church. The east window shows Christ flanked by Moses and Elijah, by Swaine Bourne, 1887. The west window shows Christ with St John, by Powell's, 1873. Our next destination was Nash. In the Guide, Nash and Boraston are (rather confusingly) grouped together in their listings. Both churches are dedicated to St John the Baptist – yet they are two separate churches, in two discrete locations. Sheep grazing in pasture by the car park at St John the Baptist, Nash. The church of St John the Baptist, Nash, dates back to the early 14th century with Norman windows in the tower dating back to 1066 – 1154.

Small quantities of tap slag were noted, together with pieces of reduced fired clay, which were probably debris from a smelting hearth. Slag was detected in a roughly 2 circular area of about 50m , with a depth probably not exceeding 20cm.

To understand the journey, you must understand where I came from, what has influenced and motivated me, and how, at times, a few rivers have, serendipitously, shaped the chapters of my life. This is the world as seen through the eyes of a boy growing up in the Blackcountry in the early post-war years, and why, more than half a century later, it is clear that you can take a man out of the Blackcountry but you cannot take the Blackcountry out of a man. Nowhere is this association clearer than with the aristocracy of the time. This project looks in detail at the close relationship between Anglo-Norman castle lords and monastic institutions, considering the different ways in which they patronised religious houses and the spiritual and social gains that they could enjoy as a result of their support. By looking at the study area of the Anglo- Welsh Marches, an overview is built up of the connections between the monastery and the castle, before individual high status Anglo-Norman families and their associated religious institutions are considered to give a more complete and detailed picture. In addition to the social aspects of this association, the wider environments of monastic sites are also studied, raising notable similarities between religious and high status secular landscapes.
