Tali F. Weinstein, Esq. General Counsel, Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office 350 Jay Street Brooklyn, NY 11201 [email protected] Tali Farhadian Weinstein, most recently a Distinguished Senior Fellow at NYU Law School’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the law school, joined the Office as General Counsel. In this role, she will advise the District Attorney on ethics and professional responsibility, best practices, appeals, conviction review, police accountability and a host of other issues. A graduate of Yale College and Oxford University, which she attended as a Rhodes Scholar, Farhadian Weinstein obtained her J.D. from Yale Law School and then served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit (2003- 04) and for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor at the Supreme Court of the United States (2004-06). In 2009, she joined the United States Department of Justice. As Counsel to the Attorney General of the United States, she advised former Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. on a range of issues, and worked closely with senior officials at the White House and executive agencies. She later became an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, where she investigated and prosecuted federal crimes, including violent crimes, narcotics trafficking, national security matters, and public corruption. In addition to teaching a course on Criminal Justice Innovation at NYU Law School, Farhadian Weinstein has also taught immigration law and policy at Columbia Law School and worked in private practice. .

Kenyatta and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to finalize plans for construction of a 233-kilometer four-lane highway from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi to Mau Summit, greatly alleviating traffic congestion along one of the country’s primary travel arteries. The public-private partnership will see Kenya National Highways Authority partner with a French consortium of Vinci Highways SAS, Meridian Infrastructure Africa Fund, and Vinci Concessions SAS to build, operate, and maintain the highway for the next 30 years for 160 billion Kenyan shillings ($1.48 billion), according to Nairobi daily The Star. It will be a toll road. The project will also include widening the existing road along that route. Some of Vinci’s other work includes the A7-2 Motorway in Germany and the M11 Neva Highway in Russia. Kenyatta and Macron also discussed helping Kenya to manufacture vaccines locally, something Nairobi became more interested in after supplies of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from India were interrupted in May, as COVID-19 cases exploded in that country.

MANHATTAN DA RACE 2021 a voter guide by 5 BORO defenders MANHATTAN DA RACE 2021 5BD HARM REPORT 0 2 ABOUT 5BD Five Boro Defenders (5BD) is an informal collective of public defenders, civil rights attorneys, and advocates fighting for the rights of indigent New Yorkers. Founded in 2006 by a group of CUNY Law students embarking upon careers in public defense and civil rights, 5BD has provided a forum for the public defender community to organize and strategize on issues impacting communities of color and low-income New Yorkers. We are proud to be one of the founding organizations of CourtWatchNYC alongside Brooklyn Community Bail Fund and VOCAL-NY in our collective call for greater courtroom accountability and transparency. As adversaries of the District Attorney, our members have a deep understanding of the unbridled power of the prosecutor and are witnesses to the daily harms it inflicts. With this unique perspective, a working group of 5BD members created our first election guide for the Brooklyn District Attorney primary in 2017. This was followed by a guide for the Queens District Attorney primary in 2019. The current guide is a product of the Manhattan working group and is possible because of the work of our colleagues in Brooklyn and Queens. What about sex purchasers or those who facilitate sex work? * For too long, prosecutors have brought drug prosecutions that do nothing to advance public safety and that have grossly and disproportionately burdened people of color and poor people. I will approach drug use as the public health threat it is, and will prioritize treatment and harm-reduction over incarceration. This means declining to prosecute most minor marijuana possession cases (as the Brooklyn District Attorney did when I was General Counsel), as well as other low-level offenses that pose no public safety threat. It also means that in cases where criminal charges and sanctions are appropriate, I will instruct A.D.A.s not to default to excessive punitive measures and to consider incarceration as a last resort. I will decline to prosecute those who sell sex, but continue to pursue purchasers and facilitators of the selling of sex when public safety requires I do so. I’m committed in the first instance to protecting the most vulnerable among us, and to using all tools and resources available to build cases against the most serious offenses – like sex trafficking. This approach is also consistent with my commitment to combat gender- based violence, and to put victims first.
