Community Newsletter Week of August 5 - 9, 2019 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office
1. City and Development Corporation staff participated in meetings and provided tours on the University Center at Hennessey Hall this week. The group met with Lt. Governor Lynn Rogers and his staff on Wednesday as well as Dr. Duane Dunn with the Kansas State University Global campus on Thursday morning. In addition, the Kansas News Service interviewed Joann Knight for a story on the University Center project as well as workforce training needs and how the Rural Education Workforce Alliance is working to fulfill these demands. For updates and more information on this project, visit http://www.dodgedev.org/mid-level-college-project. 2. Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers and staff were in Dodge City for the final stop of the Rural Prosperity Listening Tour on Wednesday evening at the Boot Hill Casino and Resort Conference Center. The purpose of the tour was for the Governor’s office to gain insight on the specific challenges and opportunities for rural communities across Kansas. Approximately 100 individuals from the region were in attendance. 3. The Kansas State Historical Society staff visited Dodge City this week in preparation for the 2019 Historic Preservation conference. The conference will be held on September 19-21, with free events available to the public on September 21. The historic Santa Fe Depot is the site for this year’s conference, and City staff has been assisting with the logistics and planning for the conference. For more information and to register, visit kshs.org/14644. 4. The Long Branch Lagoon will be hosting Round 2 of the Adult Pool Party this Saturday from 8 pm to 11 pm. The event is for adults 21 and older, and the cost for admission is $10. 5. Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Coordinator Robin Bailey participated in the Tour Kansas Showcase in Tulsa Oklahoma on Tuesday, August 6th. Robin promoted Dodge City alongside 23 other Kansas Communities at the showcase. The event targeted tour operators along with travel writers. 6. Parks and Facilities staff poured three new disc golf tee pads in Chilton Park for the disc golf course. As time permits staff will pour six more pads. This will be a great addition to the Chilton course. 7. Juana Coca, a customer service associate with Public Transportation, attended the Comanche Middle School Enrollment day on August 2nd. City of Dodge City Public Transportation was present at the enrollment to provide information and answer questions for parents of students who may not live in range of the school transportation routes but still require an alternate form or transit to school. 8. The rain tried to stop the progress Thursday morning but didn’t quite succeed. Contractors are busy on the Central Avenue Reconstruction project working on getting concrete placed from the Oak St. intersection to Elm St. The curb, gutter, and off-street parking were placed earlier in the week. Utilities are being placed in the 900 block from Elm St. to Cedar St. in front of Sacred Heart School. We know there are a lot of questions about student drop-off in front of the schools and what the status of the project will be when school starts. Unfortunately, the rains in May and June delayed the project more than we could have expected. The City has notified both Central School and Sacred Heart School that Central Ave. will not be open by the time school starts. Each school is working on a plan for parent and bus drop-off and pick-up of students. The intersection of Oak St. and Central Ave. will be open next week to traffic. One may look at the street once the concrete is placed and say, “Hey, it is done, why can’t we drive on it?” The concrete has to cure for four days before any traffic is allowed on the new concrete. Once four days have passed, construction traffic is permitted, but there is still other work that has to be done before the street can be opened to general traffic. The construction joints in the pavement need to be cleaned and sealed, final dirt work behind the street completed, and any other miscellaneous work like temporary signs and such. Remember to obey all traffic control signs, and watch for workers in the area. 9. Street crews removed an area of brick pavement that has failed at the intersection of 3rd Ave. and Mulberry St. Crews are also repairing brick utility throughout town due to water main repairs.
