AUTHORITIES OF THE UNIVERSITY 1. The Syndicate The 20-member Syndicate consists of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Secretary to Govt.Higher Education Department, the Secretary to Govt.Finance Department, the Secretary to Govt.Information Technology Department., the Director of Collegiate Education, 11 members nominated by the Government and 3 members nominated by the Chancellor. 2. The Senate The Senate of Kannur University has been reconstituted w.e.f 24.6.2019 vide (notification no.KU/EC2/ 6750/General/2018 dtd 25.06.2019) 3. The Academic Council The Academic Council consist of all Deans of Faculties, all Syndicate Members, all Heads of the University Departments, elected representatives from among Principals of affiliated colleges, one elected member from each subject of study, one member from among the Head Masters of Schools and one from among school teachers nominated by the Chancellor, one member representing each faculty elected by PG students of the faculty from among themselves, seven members from external experts nominated by the Chancellor. 4. Faculties There are seventeen faculties. The faculties consist of the Chairmen of Board of Studies, elected members and nominated members. II. OFFICERS OF THE UNIVERSITY 1.The Statutory Officers: The Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Controller of Examinations and the Finance Officer. 2. Other Officers The University has four Joint Registrars, eight Deputy Registrars, Director of Research Directorate, Director of Student Services, Director of Physical Education, Director, School of Distance Education, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Director, Directorate of International Academics, Development Officer, Computer Programmer, Public Relations Officer, Special Officer Land Acquisition,Assistant Executive Engineer, Assistant Engineer , Security Officer and nineteen Assistant Registrars. 9 Kannur University Annual Report 2019 PART II 1. Construction Works and Campus Development All the developmental activities and construction works are done under the supervision of the Development Officer and Assistant Registrar (Pl.D) The Planning and Development ‘E’ & ‘C’sections deals with the construction and Land Acquisition work.     PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT History Ponnani Is Popularly Known As “The Mecca of Kerala”

    PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT HISTORY Ponnani is popularly known as “the Mecca of Kerala”. As an ancient harbour city, it was a major trading hub in the Malabar region, the northernmost end of the state. There are many tales that try to explain how the place got its name. According to one, the prominent Brahmin family of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal once held sway over the land. During their heydays, they offered ponnu aana [elephants made of gold] to the temples, and this gave the land the name “Ponnani”. According to another, due to trade, ponnu [gold] from the Arab lands reached India for the first time at this place, and thus caused it to be named “Ponnani”. It is believed that a place that is referred to as “Tyndis” in the Greek book titled Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is Ponnani. However historians have not been able to establish the exact location of Tyndis beyond doubt. Nor has any archaeological evidence been recovered to confirm this belief. Politically too, Ponnani had great importance in the past. The Zamorins (rulers of Calicut) considered Ponnani as their second headquarters. When Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in 1766, Ponnani was annexed to the Mysore kingdom. Later when the British colonized the land, Ponnani came under the Bombay Province for a brief interval of time. Still later, it was annexed Malabar and was considered part of the Madras Province for one-and-a-half centuries. Until 1861, Ponnani was the headquarters of Koottanad taluk, and with the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, it became a taluk in Palakkad district.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 INTRODUCTION Government Brennen College, Dharmadam, Thalassery is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the state of Kerala. With a tradition of 130 years, the college is catering to the comprehensive advancement of the various sections of the society in the region. Developed out of the Free School established in 1862 by Edward Brennen, the institution was elevated to the status of Grade II College in1890. It has now emerged as a centre of excellence with the status of ‘Heritage College’ by the UGC, one among the 19 colleges in India. The College offers 18 UG, 12 PG and One M. Phil course. There are eight research departments. The selection process to the courses is transparent. Due weightage is given to the marginalised, the differently-abled and the like categories who are provided with ample emotional and economic support so as to bring them to the main stream. The teaching, learning and evaluation procedures are being revised and updated from time to time. Well- designed Tutorial System, transparent Internal Assessment, fruitful remedial coaching etc. are the highlights of the institution. The meritorious academic community, led by resourceful faculty of national and international reputation testify the vibrant academic ambience of the college.
